Deep in central Shanghai, a quiet but powerful movement is on the rise. An increasing number of middle-school students are walking out of their classrooms and into their communities—— not for homework,but to volunteer.

How to Survive a Flood

Floods can be very dangerous, and knowing what to do can help keep you and your family safe.

Never drive or walk through floodwater. Because the water may be deeper than it appears. And the moving water can be strong enough to push you or your car away. Also, there can be dangerous things that you cannot see under the water, like holes, broken glass, or wires(电线) that carry electricity. You should also stay away from bridges over fast-moving water because they can be washed away without warning.

The Uyuni Salt Flat(乌尤尼盐沼), located in southwestern Bolivia, is known as the"Mirror of the Sky". After the rain, this place looks like a mirror. It shows the sky so clearly that you can't tell the difference between the ground and the sky. The amazing mirror effect doesn't come out of thin air. It is made possible by three key factors(要素).

The first and most important factor is the flat(平整的) ground. TheUyuni Salt Flat has one of the flattest surfaces in the world. It formed after ancient lakes dried up slowly.As lake water evaporated(蒸发), a thick, even salt layer(层) was left, making the ground nearly perfectly flat. Light rain covers the salt with a thin layer of water, turning the salt flat into a big natural mirror.

The rainfall also plays an important role. It can't be a storm. Just enough rain to cover the layer of salt is perfect. If the rain is heavy, water holes will form and the mirror effect will be lost.

Besides, calm weather is necessary for the clear mirror effect. Even a small wind can make waves on the water. These waves will break up the clear reflection and take away the magical experience.

The mirror effect mainly appears during the rainy season, which runs from December to March. If you want to see the beautiful view, you need to know that the effect doesn't last long. When the water evaporates under the sun, the"mirror" disappears and the ground turns back into hard, white salt.

Have you ever choked (噎住) on something during a meal and been unable to breathe? Do you know how to act when someone is choked? An 11-year-old girl from  Shenyang,  Liaoning Province became a hero after she saved a woman from choking by using the Heimlich manoeuvre (海姆立克急救法)—— just days after learning it.

The event took place on 8th August, 2025, at a hot pot restaurant inShenyang. Many people recorded it with a camera and soon shared the video online. Back at 16:00 that afternoon, Ms. Wu was drinking milk tea when something went down the wrong way and got stuck in her throat. She suddenly couldn't breathe, so she stood up to ask for help by gesturing  (做手势)  to her partner and restaurant waiters. Her partner noticed that and he tried patting (拍打)  her back. Restaurant waiters also rushed to her side to help, but no one knew about first aid.

At that moment,  11-year-old Hu Zihan, who was dining at a nearby table, rushed over. She stood behind Wu, put her arms around Wu's stomach, and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre. Within 30seconds, some tapioca pearls(木薯珍珠)  came out of Wu's mouth, allowing her to breathe again. Wu quickly turned around and hugged Hu to thank her.

It is reported that Hu is a volunteer of the Liaoning Provincial Red Cross Society. She had just learned the Heimlich manoeuvre during a training lesson seven days before."Everyone should learn first aid because it is for everyone. In emergencies, knowing first aid can truly save lives." Hu said.

Journey(旅行) to the East

Two Frenchmen, 27-year-old Rene and 26-year-old Loic, had a special trip. In September 2024, they started their journey from Annecy, France.They walked non-stop. They went through 16 countries and wore out six pairs of shoes. After walking about 13,000 kilometers, Rene and Loic finally arrived in China in September 2025.

They went to Gansu first. There, they were amazed by beautiful Danxia landforms(丹霞地貌). Also, they were surprised by modern cities."There are so many modern things, and we have to learn all the new digital(数字的)habits," Loic told China Daily.

Then they arrived in Henan. Rene and Loic met their fans for the first time at a noodle restaurant. The fans watched their travel vlog on the social media(社交媒体). These kind fans made them love China even more."Every day, people give us something like postcards and snacks to welcome us," they said.

Beatrix Potter was a British writer. She wrote The Tale of Peter Rabbit. At first, the story was a letter for a sick child.

In the south of China, there are special days called"hui nan tian". FromFebruary to April every year, it feels like everything is full of water.

Why does"hui na tian" happen? When winter turns to spring, warm and wet air from the sea meets cold air. The cold air is usually under 12℃.It's just like the bathroom after a shower—— water drops can be on winaows,floors, and walls!

What problems does"hui na tian" bring? Food goes bad easily. Shoes may even become mouldy(发霉的). Floors become slippery(滑的) so it's easy for people to slip. People may feel lazy and even unhappy.

What can we do during these days?

AI is a special computer system. It can learn and finish hard work that used to be done only by people. We use AI every day. But some people are worried about students using AI too much. In the UK, students under 13 can't use AI alone. They need a grown-up(成年人) they trust to help them.

Oxford University Press(牛津大学出版社) did a study. It asked almost4,000 British students aged 12 to 18 about how they feel about using AI in class and for homework.

In the study, students all got a writing task. Some of them wished they hadAI to help. But the other students chose not to use it. A student who refused(拒绝) AI said:"AI doesn't have its own ideas and it may give wrong information." Another student used AI because he was bad at spelling and needed help with difficult words.

All the results show students hold different opinions about AI. Only 18%often use AI to do homework, while 29% will turn to AI only when teachers ask them to. Besides, 42% believe using AI to finish all homework is cheating(作弊), and only 11% say their teachers have told them how to use AI well.

What's more, a few students hope their teachers use AI more, for AI can help teachers plan lessons and make hard schoolwork easy to understand. More students don't think so. They say teachers have special skills that AI will never have because teachers are caring and truly understand them.

In Guiyang, a new trend(潮流) called"color walks" encourages people to slow down and enjoy nature. Instead of walking in a hurry, people choose one color first and then look for it in parks, streets and riversides.  This small activity helps them find beautiful details in daily life. It is more than just taking photos.

When you spend time looking for pink flowers on Chengxin Road or purple wisteria(紫藤) in Huaxi Park, you start to concentrate on the things you' re doing now.  You notice how flowers change from day to day,  how the air smells, and how the colors mix in the sky.

The walk is a slow journey.  Instead of checking your phone or thinking about work, you follow the color like a map.  In the Red Area of GuizhouGarden, children stop to count the petals(花瓣) of a tulip(郁金香), and adults sit down to watch bees fly from one flower to another. This kind of attention makes people feel calm and connected to the world.

"Color walks" show us that a city is not only made of buildings and roads,but also full of lively natural beauty. When we walk slowly and watch different colors around us, we can be peaceful. Many people say this activity helps them feel less tired and learn to thank for the small things in life. So this summer,just choose your favorite color, go out and let colorful sights bring you a slow and wonderful life.
