A Smart Shopper

Sandy is a 15-year-old student who has learned a lot about managing money.  Every month, she receives 200 yuan from her parents as pocket money.  Unlike many of her classmates who spend all their money on snacks and online games, Sandy has developed some good shopping habits. 

Before buying anything, Sandy always asks herself two questions: "Do I really need this?" and "Can I afford it?" She never buys things just because they are cheap or on sale.  She also compares prices in different shops or online to make sure she gets the best deal. 

Sandy keeps a spending diary.  She writes down everything she buys and how much it costs.  This helps her see where her money goes and avoid wasting money on unnecessary things.  She also sets a budget for different kinds of spending, such as 50 yuan for snacks, 50 yuan for stationery, and 100 yuan for savings. 

Sometimes, Sandy makes her own gifts instead of buying them.  For example, she made a beautiful card for her mother's birthday using paper and crayons.  Her mother was very happy and said it was the best gift ever. 

Sandy's parents are proud of her.  They say she has learned the value of money and how to use it wisely.  Sandy believes that good spending habits will help her in the future. 

Children love pocket money.  Many parents give their children pocket money each week and allow them  (spend) it as they wish.  Other parents don't think it's wise to do so.  They think children should be taught that money doesn't grow on trees and that  they need it, they have to do something to get it.  So, some parents expect their children to make money by  (do) housework like washing the dishes or cleaning the house.  And some parents even encourage their children to take on part-time jobs. 

Children usually spend all their money.  Some parents encourage their children to save some in their own bank account.  Then they can pay for their favourite things  (them).  Pocket money actually has  big influence on children.  It helps them to develop good spending and saving habits.  It  (teach) them important skills and values.  Children understand that money is not unlimited (无限制的), and then they will learn how to spend or save their money  (wise).  They practise planning and making  (choice).  They also learn more maths skills through  (manage) money.  Pocket money helps children to become  (independent) as they get older. 

A: Hi, Billy.  Helen's birthday is coming.  Have you received her invitation?

B: Yes.  

A: Me, too.  I'm just thinking about the gift.  

B: Well, she likes writing.  Why not get her pens and books by her favourite writer?

A:  I think she'll be happy to get them. 

B: Yeah.  By the way, how will you buy the gift? Will you ask your parents for money?

A:  I've already saved my pocket money. 

B: That's a good habit.  I think we should learn to use our pocket money well.  I just spend it on the things I really need. 

A: You're so wise.  

B: What a kind girl! Learning to save and use money wisely is important to us. 

I've  to try hard to save money for a new computer.
