When we volunteer, we play a role in improving others' lives. At  same time, we are helping ourselves.

Since last summer vacation, I  (volunteer) at an organization called Cradles to Crayons. It gives away things such as clothes and shoes to  (child) in need. 

Last summer vacation I spent two hours a day  (help) choose and pack things there. I quite liked the work. When volunteering there, I  (meet) some of the nicest people. They were always happy  ready to help. I enjoyed talking and working  them.

At the end of each day, the volunteer leader would tell  (we) how many children we helped that day. I was surprised  (see) how a small act could make a big difference to someone's life. I got a strong feeling of satisfaction from this.

My volunteer experience at Cradles to Crayons also taught me to be thankful for the things I have in life—food, clean water, clothes, family... I can get them   (easy), but some people have many difficulties, so it's not easy for them to own those things. We should value what we have.

Are you looking for a new way to raise money for charity?  Don't give up. There are several ways to support your favourite charity.

How about organizing a car wash? People with cars wash their cars by themselves or ask someone else to do it.  Then you can get some money for your charity. When we did it, we had an amazing time! At first, some of us were worried about getting wet or dirty. It was true, but we also had fun. 

On the other hand, if you don't feel like getting wet or messy but have some musical talent, how about organizing a street concert? Street musicians can make a lot of money, and so can you. If you've got the talent and courage (勇气) , you can play in front of the audience  (观众) . You just need to find a suitable place and practise for a few hours with your friends first.

Our school organized a last weekend to raise money for poor children.

Tom: Hi, Jack! Have you ever been to the zoo? 

Jack: Yes, I have. I have volunteered there for a long time.

Tom: Really? How long have you been a volunteer there?

Jack: I have been a volunteer there since last summer.

Tom: You mean you have volunteered there since your last summer holidays started? 

Jack: That's right. 

Is the summer vacation long enough (足够) to change life for the better? Every person has his own interests. Find something you care about, and you will see the difference.

Organize a clean-up programme. People often throw litter in the place where there is already litter. This leaves the community in a mess. The environment will become better if someone volunteers to help. You could pick up the rubbish with your friends once a week in your neighbourhood. You could also help take care of the plants every few days. Surely, a clean and tidy neighbourhood will be worth the work.

Show your love to the old. Our city has some old people's homes. Without children around them, the old people there might feel lonely once in a while. Maybe they need your help. In fact, you can do a lot for them. For example, you can talk with them or play games with them. Listening to them carefully is also a good idea. No matter what small things you do, you can make them feel loved.

Set up a reading project with your friends. Share your favourite books with them. Besides, you may read aloud (大声) to each other and talk about what you read. Either a book or an article can spark a lively discussion (讨论) and your further thinking. The process often encourages more people to take action.

A two-month summer vacation isn't that long, but it's enough to make a difference.
