Our class will organize an activity named "Care for the Elderly" at Xinhua Nursing Home.

In recent years, community volunteer services in Zhunge'er Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have been developing well. In Baiyun Community, the "Xingfuli Shared Station" has become a popular place for sharing. It provides various kinds of items for people to borrow. There are over 200 kinds of tools, toys, books and even some children's performance costumes. People living there can borrow these things simply by signing up. 

The "Cultural Station" in the community also plays an important role. It offers art courses such as piano and flute (长笛) lessons for the elderly and children. There are activity rooms where people can gather and have fun. 

In Tiebei Community, the "Shared Grandmas" volunteer service team is making a big difference. These grandmas contribute a lot to the community. They take care of children and they also help with some housework for the elderly who live alone. Cui Lei is one of them. One time, when her water pipe (管子) broke at night, neighbors and community workers came to help her immediately. This made her decide to give back to the community, so she joined the team. 

These volunteer services have made the community a better place to live in. People help each other and enjoy a better life. 

Most old people spend their golden years playing chess, reading newspapers or just relaxing, but Ren Heyong does something different. He managed to turn his yard  an open classroom. There, he teaches people how to paint. He also provides them with all the necessary  (material), including paper, brushes, and ink (油墨), at no cost. Over the past four years, he  (give) more than 300 classes. 

Ren has always wanted to do something  the society. After he retired (退休) from his job, he finally got free time. He chose to give free art lessons because for him, painting is  (relaxing) than doing anything else. 

Ren is not a professional teacher,  he has developed a good teaching way by himself. Usually, he begins each class by creating a painting. Then he shows it to his students and asks  (they) to copy it step by step. "It's helpful," Ren explained. "It's important  (let) students know what their work should look like first, rather than asking them to paint  (direct)." 

Ren's open classroom has won great  (popular). His neighbors were touched by Ren and some of them even offered their parking spaces to house the increasing number of students. 

"Seeing my students enjoying painting and making progress brings me so much joy and happiness," Ren said.

My friend Shakuntali Siberia once said, "" I used to wonder, "Is this really so?" But after experiencing one thing, I think it is true. 

We live in a new, strange world. My new dress hangs in my closet (衣橱)—I have nowhere to wear it. My expensive car is parked—I can't go anywhere. My gym membership card is on my desk—I haven't used it for a long time. Siberia was right—things do not make me happy. 

Then how can we find happiness? I asked Siberia this question. She said it's easy— I decided to try it. I opened WhatsApp and entered a chat group where my neighbours and I discuss our problems. I wrote, "Dear neighbours, I hope you're having a great day! Everything will be all right." I added a smiley emoji.  People thanked me and wished me a good day. One neighbour shared a fun song, another sent a cute kitten sticker, and another sent me a funny meme (表情包). 

I thought to myself, " If each of us said one nice thing, there could be so much happiness in the world!" This is why I'm launching (发起) the kind words marathon. Let's each write something nice every day to a friend, volunteer... anyone! 

When Helen was six, she saw a person who was homeless standing on the street in her town. She wanted to help him, so she and her mom gave the man a sandwich and a bottle of water. Helen kept thinking about the man and what it must be like to be hungry. She knew that fresh fruits and vegetables often aren't available (可用的) at food banks, where homeless people may get canned or boxed food. Helen had an idea. 

"There was a garden in our backyard, and we weren't using it," she says. 

"I asked my mom if I could use that garden to grow food for the homeless." 

Now, several years later, Helen's garden has provided many people with strawberries, blueberries, peas, tomatoes, and other fresh produce (农产品). When the food is ready to harvest, Helen picks, washes, and bags it. Then she and her mom give the bags to people on the street or to a local food bank. Helen has given away more than 550 pounds of fruits and vegetables so far! While handing out food, Helen and her mom often see people more than once. They learn their names and talk with people about what it's like to be homeless. 

Helen has learned a lot since she gave away her first sandwich. She has learned to see people who are homeless as individuals (个人). To help others, she says, "Start small. You can always grow over the years." 

Come and Help with the City Games

Our City Games will be held from next July 20th to 28th. We need 2,000 volunteers. The jobs are open to people aged between 12 and 18. Those who have experience of volunteering in sports events will be chosen first. 

Skills needed:

* Have good communication skills 

* Be good at learning and love trying new things

Your personal information like name, ID number, education experience must be filled in. Then, email us at zyzb@2026youth.cn to hand in your application from next April 3rd to April 15th. 

And you can check if your application is accepted in your mailbox from next May 1st to May 10th. 

Once your application is accepted, we will have an interview with you. If you are excellent and lucky enough, you can pass the interview and then get ready to take the training lessons in June.
