First of all, laughter is good for our body. When we laugh, our body takes in more oxygen (氧气). Every part of our body needs it to work well. Laughter also makes our body work out. Our heart, stomach, and even our shoulders work hard when we laugh! But after  we  laugh,  our muscles  feel more  relaxed.  A good laugh  can  help  you  feel  relaxed  for up  to  45  minutes.  Over time,  laughter  helps  our body  to  get  stronger,  fight  off more diseases, and even create special chemicals to help us feel less pain!

Laughter also has many benefits for our mood. When we laugh, it makes us feel less stressed or anxious, and things will not seem so bad. Laughing also  causes our brain to release  chemicals that make  us  feel  calm and happy.  Scientists  even  think that  smiling often is enough to increase these chemicals in our brain.

But it is not always easy to laugh on our own. We are 30 times more likely to laugh when we  are  around  others.  According to  some  scientists,  laughter  can  show others that  we want to be close to them. Monkeys clean one another's fur to show friendship. But people laugh so that others will know that they are being friendly.

Some people  even join laughing groups.  Although they force themselves to laugh at first, after hearing other people laugh, their laughter becomes real!  Before long, the whole group of people is laughing hard.

The next time you feel unhappy, try thinking about something funny. Although you might not want to laugh when you are sad, doing so can make you feel better!

The compass is one of the most useful tools ever invented. It helps people find directions when they travel. Without it, getting from one place to another would be much harder.

How does a compass work? The Earth is like a very big magnet(磁铁). It has a North Pole and a South Pole. The needle(指针)of a compass is also a small magnet. It can turn around freely.The Earth's magnetic pull makes the needle always point to the north. Once you know where north is, you can find south, east,and west too.

The first compasses were made in China more than 2,000 years ago. People used a special rock called lodestone(天然磁石) to make them. Lodestone is a natural magnet. These early compasses were very simple. They were not used for travel at first. People used them for feng shui. They believed it helped them build houses in the right way.

Everything changed about 1,000 years ago. Chinese sailors started to use compasses on their ships. This was very important. Before that, sailors had to look at the sun or stars to find their way. But on cloudy days, they could not see the sun or stars. They could easily get lost. With a compass, they could sail anywhere, even when the sky was grey. They could travel far across the ocean and find their way home again.

Today, compasses are everywhere. Many smartphones have small compasses inside.Cars and planes use GPS to find directions. GPS is like a very smart compass that uses satellites in space. But even with all these new technologies, the idea is still the same. We still need to know which way we are going.
