My Resolutions

放学后，Linda 和 Mary谈起了各自的职业梦想⋯⋯

Linda: Hi, Mary.  ?

Mary: Hello, Linda. I am thinking about my dream. 

Linda: Oh!  ?

Mary: I'd like to be an IT engineer. I like playing on the computer and hope to make cool apps one day. How about you?

Linda: . I want to fly to the moon.

Linda: I will read more books about space and do more sports. Can you give me some advice?

Gael and Miguel were two boys living in a small town. Both of them expected to become  when they grew up. 

They spent their days pretending(假装) to be firefighters and saving their toys from the f re  they were only six years old. They also visited the local fire station every weekend. As they  older, they took their pretend play more seriously. They even built a small fire station at home. Chief Ron, leader of the fire station, showed  the communication room when the two boys visited the station. They learned how firefighters talked with their teammates during emergencies(紧急事件). These experiences made them have  in their dreams. And they promised that they would try their best to  their dreams. 

As time passed, Gael and Miguel became teenage volunteers(志愿者) at the fire station. They helped ChiefRon check(检查) the fire trucks and do other things. These experiences made them  , and they learned the duty of firefighters. They also  a deep friendship with Chief Ron. 

After high school, they chose to go to the Fire School. The training was hard, but they always remembered their  and dreams. During their four years in the school, they were trained very well.  , their dreams came true!

People often make resolutions to make their lives better. But do you know why resolutions can improve people's lives? 

First of all, resolutions can help to achieve the goals in people's lives. When the new year begins, people always like to make some resolutions.  For example, a sports player may promise to win first place in the next game. 

 If people want to achieve their resolutions, they need make plans and follow them. Some people may forget their plans, so they write down their resolutions and plans. 

Finally, resolutions can help people face the difficulties. There are all kinds of difficulties and problems in people's lives.  But with the help of resolutions they make, they are more willing(愿意) to face the difficulties and problems. 

All of these are the reasons why resolutions can help in improving people's lives. 

(A reporter is interviewing Constance Hoffman about her job and how she got into costume design.)

Reporter: When did you first become interested in costume design?

Constance: When I was in high school, I dreamed of becoming an actress, so I took theater classes. During college, I took part in a small student show. I was asked to design the costumes. And I found that Ireally enjoyed the process(过程). 

Reporter: Did you take design classes after that?

Constance: Yes, I took design classes in college. In my final year, I applied(申请) to graduate school(研究生院) at New York University. There-I studied design. 

Reporter: Are costume designers all good at drawing?

Constance: Well, drawing is important, but it's mainly a tool. The key is to draw out your ideas clearly. 

Reporter: How do you come up with the ideas for costumes?

Constance:I have to do a lot of research(研究) on the opera. Who wrote it? Who were the characters? What was going on in the world at the time? By answering these questions, I can better understand the opera. I also need to work with the director and the rest of the team. 

Reporter: What do you love most about your job?

Constance:I always get to meet new people and start new stories. These two things keep me learning!

My name is Michelle. My dream job began with my love for making people laugh. 

When I was at school, I always told jokes to my classmates. When they laughed, I also felt happy. After leaving school, I worked in a fast-food restaurant in the daytime and learned how to act at night. Then I started to act as a performer at theatres(剧院) on weekends. It took me two years to appear on TV a few times and I became somewhat(有点) famous. I finally got a role in a TV comedy(喜剧) show and I began to work on the show. 

It isn't easy to have new ideas to make others laugh all the time. When I can't think of anything. new or interesting, I get very sad. Walking is a great way to relax and it helps me to think deeply. When I take a walk, Ican always come up with some new ideas. Climbing mountains and swimming can help me relax too. 

I love my job. I think comedies are popular with people of all ages. They can take people's worries away. 

Carlos was an ice hockey fan. However, he thought it was difficult to make his 1 of becoming an ice hockey player come true.

Nowadays, sharing step counts has become very popular. Why has this happened? 

Recently, more and more people  (get) to know the importance of health. Some people choose to walk to work. Before they start walking, they open step-tracking apps (步数跟踪应用程序) . These apps can record the steps  (clear) . At the end of the day, some people share their steps on social media. It  (be) a good way for people to see how active (积极的) their friends are and encourages each other  (keep) moving. 

"I hardly exercised before. But now I walk every day. My friends and I cheer each other on in a group. It's  (interesting) than sitting at home! " says Miss Liu,  office worker. 

Mr. Wu, a father, adds, "I used to hate exercising, but now I compete  friends sometimes. There are even small  (prize) for the winners! It makes exercising feel like a game and we can relax  (our) after work. "

Do you know how to make your study more effective (有效的) ? Almost every student has his own way of learning, but a 1 with my deskmate gave me new ideas on how to study effectively.

Ask before you help.

Disabled people will ask for help if they need it, just like anybody else.  Because you are sending them a message: they can't take care of themselves and can't do anything by themselves. 

Sometimes, the best thing that you can do to help a disabled person is offer your help to people close to him. Think about parents with a disabled child. It is not easy to raise children, and these parents' difficulties are even greater. If you want to help, ask if there is anything you can do for the family. 

Get them into social events.

Every disabled person needs to be with others, especially a child. No child should be isolated (孤立的) .  Ask them if they would like to join you in doing what you are doing. 

Remember, we all want to feel loved, and disabled people are no different. Looking at them as any other person will make things easier for both of you. 

What can you do to help disabled people? (回答不超过15词) 

①A new report from the United Nations said that glaciers (冰川) are melting (融化) faster than ever before. This is a problem because many people depend on these glaciers for their food and water. To solve it, China is using some smart ideas to make glaciers melt slowly. 

②One idea is to use special glacier blankets (毯子) . At Dagu Glacier in Sichuan, scientists covered a 500-square-meter area with blankets made of geotextiles (土工织物) . The blankets stopped the glacier from getting too hot from the sun, which slowed melting by about 34% from August 2020 to October 2021. Another test used very thin, high-tech blankets on Glacier No. 1 in Xinjiang. They worked best in summer. The test showed they slowed melting by up to 70% during the hottest months. 

③Scientists also create artificial snow (人造雪) to help glaciers stay cooler and melt more slowly. In April and May 2023, scientists did this in the Bailanghe Glacier in the Qilian Mountains. This project used rockets to make snow. The glacier grew 5. 9% bigger. 

④Besides, China also tries to watch glaciers carefully. Now drones (无人机) and satellites (卫星) are used to monitor (监控) glaciers. 

⑤China's good actions have made a difference to protecting glaciers. These actions not only slow down melting but also provide important experience for global climate actions. 

On April 3, 2005, Chinese snooker (斯诺克) player Ding Junhui won the champion (冠军) . Eight-year-old Zhao Xintong, who looked up to Ding as his hero, watched this exciting win. 

Twenty years later, on May 6, in Bejing, 28-year-old Zhao made history. After beating three-time world champion Mark Williams, Zhao became the first Asian player to win the World Snooker Championship (锦标赛) . "I've got nothing but admiration (钦佩) for what he's done. He is a new superstar of the game," Williams told China Daily after the final match. 

Born in Xi'an, Shanxi Province, Zhao's talent for snooker showed from age 6 when he first played snooker. In 2016, he started his professional snooker career (生涯) and did well in many competitions. In 2021, he became the second Chinese player to win the UK Championship. 

Snooker is a sport played with 22 balls. Players hit the cue ball (母球) to pot (击落) other balls in the right order. They must control the cue ball's speed and direction (速度和方向) carefully. By changing how and where they hit the ball, they can, control the game. Zhao is great at this and can even control the friction (摩擦) between the cue ball and the table, which makes him a strong player. 

From a young fan of Ding Junhui to a world champion, Zhao Xintong has made snooker history. He shows that dreams can come true with love and hard work.
