Many people are interested in the idea that"Good friends come in stages(阶段)". According to a report inBritain, 40 percent of young British people aged 16 and over don't keep in touch with some of their friends. Wil-liam Rawlins, friendship researcher, says that friendships cover three types: active, dormant(休眠的) and com-memorative(纪念的). 

Friendships will be active if you' re often in touch with some people. When you get into difficulties, you can ask them for help. They will help you without asking for anything in return. 

A"dormant friend" is someone you used to spend time with, but you haven't talked to each other these days. But if you get together, you will still be comfortable. 

A"commemorative friend" is someone who was important to you at an earlier time in your life, but you don't really expect to see or hear from him or her again. 

What is a good friendship? According to Adam Smiley Poswolsky, author of Friendaship in the Age of Loneli-ness, good friends bring out the best in each other. A friendship is of great importance in our lives. No matter what kind of friendship it is, it is always the most colourful part of our life. That's why we should have friends. 

At the end of last term, there was an English show in the school. MrSimon asked his students to work in groups to perform. It was really good for (they) to work together. 

Daisy is  outgoing girl. One day, Mr Simon asked her, "Daisy, can you work with Cindy?""Oh. . . Cindy?" Daisy seemed (happy). No one wanted to work with Cindy because of her (appear). There was a birthmark on her face. 

Cindy walked over to Daisy's desk (quiet). "I think we can make a movie, " Cindy said. "Many people say I am better at making films  others. I can show you. "

Then Cindy played some movie clips(电影片段). "This one is about my (hobby) like sing-ing and dancing. And this one is about my mum, " she said. The clips were so (touch) that Daisy couldn't help crying. She felt Cindy was very different  other kids at this age. 

After that, Daisy usually played with Cindy in her spare time. She learned  to use a camera(相机) to record life.  it was a little hard to learn, Daisy didn't give up. 

Then the English show day (come). Cindy and Daisy showed their movie. When the movie was over, everyone was (surprise). Of course, they won (first) place. Cindy made a great (different) to Daisy's life. Daisy also found Cindy was better than she had ever thought.

How to be a good friend?

Being a good listener makes your friends feel they are important. Find out your friends' good points(特点)and tell them openly. It will help your friends become more confident.As you grow, your hobbies may become different from those of your friends, and you may have new friends. But you should not forget your old friends. 

Why are friendships important?

Friends can help you stay away from loneliness(孤独). And making friends from different places helps you to learn about different cultures. 

How to solve problems between your friends and you?

It is important for you and your friends to work out a problem together and talk about your feelings. If both of you are angry, it may be better to talk about the problem when both of you are calm(冷静的). 

Do you know World Introvert Day(世界内向者日)? It is on January 2nd every year. It is a day for people to know about introverts better. We can also learn a lot from introverts.

Many introverts are good listeners. Also, they can keep secrets(秘密). This often makes them loyal(忠诚的) friends. What's more, being a listener can teach you to think twice before you speak.

Introverts enjoy the company(陪伴) of others at the right time. Most of the time, however, they don't need the company of others. They show us how important it is to take time for ourselves.

Introverts are often good at thinking. They spend a lot of time with their own thoughts. That helps them know what they need and want clearly. In our lives, we should not only care about others but also learn to keep our eyes on ourselves and love ourselves. 

It's important for us to have a good character. Do you know how to develop it? Here is some advice to help you. 

Making friends at my new school is really difficult for me. At my old school in Toronto, I was on the football team and in the music club, so I was very popular and had a lot of 1 .

My Resolutions

放学后，Linda 和 Mary谈起了各自的职业梦想⋯⋯

Linda: Hi, Mary.  ?

Mary: Hello, Linda. I am thinking about my dream. 

Linda: Oh!  ?

Mary: I'd like to be an IT engineer. I like playing on the computer and hope to make cool apps one day. How about you?

Linda: . I want to fly to the moon. 

Mary:  ?

Linda: I will read more books about space and do more sports. Can you give me some advice?

Mary: Yes. It's not easy to be an astronaut. You need to be really smart and strong. Also, don't be afraid of new things. 

Linda:. I will join the science club at school and keep exercising. 

Mary: I hope your dream can come true.

Gael and Miguel were two boys living in a small town. Both of them expected to become  when they grew up. 

They spent their days pretending(假装) to be firefighters and saving their toys from the f re  they were only six years old. They also visited the local fire station every weekend. As they  older, they took their pretend play more seriously. They even built a small fire station at home. Chief Ron, leader of the fire station, showed  the communication room when the two boys visited the station. They learned how firefighters talked with their teammates during emergencies(紧急事件). These experiences made them have  in their dreams. And they promised that they would try their best to  their dreams. 

As time passed, Gael and Miguel became teenage volunteers(志愿者) at the fire station. They helped ChiefRon check(检查) the fire trucks and do other things. These experiences made them  , and they learned the duty of firefighters. They also  a deep friendship with Chief Ron. 

After high school, they chose to go to the Fire School. The training was hard, but they always remembered their  and dreams. During their four years in the school, they were trained very well.  , their dreams came true!

People often make resolutions to make their lives better. But do you know why resolutions can improve people's lives? 

First of all, resolutions can help to achieve the goals in people's lives. When the new year begins, people always like to make some resolutions.  For example, a sports player may promise to win first place in the next game. 

 If people want to achieve their resolutions, they need make plans and follow them. Some people may forget their plans, so they write down their resolutions and plans. 

Finally, resolutions can help people face the difficulties. There are all kinds of difficulties and problems in people's lives.  But with the help of resolutions they make, they are more willing(愿意) to face the difficulties and problems. 

All of these are the reasons why resolutions can help in improving people's lives. 

(A reporter is interviewing Constance Hoffman about her job and how she got into costume design.)

Reporter: When did you first become interested in costume design?

Constance: When I was in high school, I dreamed of becoming an actress, so I took theater classes. During college, I took part in a small student show. I was asked to design the costumes. And I found that Ireally enjoyed the process(过程). 

Reporter: Did you take design classes after that?

Constance: Yes, I took design classes in college. In my final year, I applied(申请) to graduate school(研究生院) at New York University. There-I studied design. 

Reporter: Are costume designers all good at drawing?

Constance: Well, drawing is important, but it's mainly a tool. The key is to draw out your ideas clearly. 

Reporter: How do you come up with the ideas for costumes?

Constance:I have to do a lot of research(研究) on the opera. Who wrote it? Who were the characters? What was going on in the world at the time? By answering these questions, I can better understand the opera. I also need to work with the director and the rest of the team. 

Reporter: What do you love most about your job?

Constance:I always get to meet new people and start new stories. These two things keep me learning!
