What is the Golden Week in China?

Golden Week is one of the longest holidays in China, usually lasting from October 1st to7th to celebrate China's National Day. During this holiday, Chinese people love to travel a lot. which makes it the busiest time for the tourism industry.  They go shopping, eat at nice restaurants and watch movies at theatres. 

Why is the National Day holiday called the"Golden Week"?

 This week-long break is one of the longest public holidays in China, allowing people to take both short and long trips. The good weather and nice temperatures make it a golden time for travelling.

During the National Day holiday, cities and places of interest are crowded, and traffic is busy. Train tickets to popular cities are often sold out quickly. Places like the West Lake in Hangzhou and the Great Wall in Beijing get so crowded that it's hard for tourists to enjoy the view.

Try not to travel on the first day and the last day of the holiday. Don't go to the places that are very popular because they' re usually too crowded.

The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China, when people light lanterns, set off fireworks(放烟花), eat yuanxiao and enjoy family time. But do you know how this festival started? 

In the Han Dynasty, there was a man named Dongfang Shuo. He worked for the Emperor(君王) Wu of Han. One day, Dongfang met a crying maid(宫女) named Yuanxiao in the emperor's garden. He asked her what happened. And the maid said she was sad because she couldn't see her family. 

Dongfang promised to help Yuanxiao. He left the garden and went to the street. He started telling people that a big fire would happen on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It was the order of the Jade Emperor. Word spread(传播) quickly and people in the city were afraid. 

The Emperor Wu of Han heard of it and asked Dongfang for advice. Dongfang advised him to let Yuanxiao make glutinous rice(糯米)balls for the God of Fire to make him happy. He also advised everyone in the city to put up red lanterns and set off fireworks to create an illusion(错觉) that the city was on fire. Seeing this, the Jade Emperor would not set fire. 

On the special day, the city was full of people and lanterns. Yuanxiao's parents were able to meet up with their daughter in the crowd. The city was safe, and the Emperor Wu of Han was happy. He ordered that every year on this day, people should make glutinous rice balls and hang lanterns. 

From then on, the 15th day of the first lunar month has been called the LanternFestival or Yuanxiao Jie. Since Yuanxiao cooked the best glutinous rice balls, people called the food yuanxiao or tangyuan. 

What can we do with recycled things? For Yan Hong, from Chengdu, they can become (amaze) craftwork pieces(手工艺品). She thinks we can reduce pollution  this way. 

She used nut shells (make)a "golden" armor(盔甲). She made a Miao headdress with recycled cans. Even (potato) were used for casting molds(翻模) of a queen's crown.

I'm Lisa Simpson and I like nature very much. But there are many environmental problems. There is too much pollution in cities because of traffic and factories. To solve the problem, we can do many things. For example, we can go out on foot or by bike instead of a car. In this way, we will help to protect our environment. 

Apart from this, we shouldn't throw away newspapers, glass or plastics. If we recycle these materials, we can use them again. Also, we can  rubbish into paper, plastic, glass and rubber at home. 

Don't waste water. People in many places are short of it. Use it  . If we have a shorter shower instead of a bath, we will save a large amount of water. 

In addition, people are cutting down so many trees that many animals don't have places to live. Some of them  just because people love clothes or bags made of their fur(毛皮). I hope to develop  to care for our mother Earth if I become a governor one day.

Clubs Making a Difference for the Earth

Joining a club to help to protect the environment can be both fun and meaningful. Here's an interview with two students, Alex and Mia, who have started clubs at their schools to help the planet. 

What is the goal of your club?

Alex: My club, the "Clean Air Group", focuses on reducing(减少) air pollution. We encourage students to ride bikes and use public transport to reduce air pollution. 

Mia:  Our goal is to create community gardens in different parts of our school and neighbourhood to provide fresh vegetables, which are good for both people and wildlife. 

How did you come up with the idea for your club?

Alex:  And I realised how much pollution they were producing. I wanted to do something to help to reduce it, and that's whenI thought of cleaner ways of getting to school. 

Mia: I' ve always enjoyed gardening with my family, and when I learned about how important plants are for the environment, Ithought,  "Why not start a club that lets others experience that too? "

Alex: We organise "No Car Day". On that day, students walk, ride a bike or take the bus to school. We also invite guest speakers to talk about air pollution and its influence on our planet. 

Mia: We plant and take good care of school gardens. We give away some of the products from our gardens to local food banks. 

What influence has your club had so far?

Alex:A lot of students now use bikes or carpool more often. It's great to see people being more mindful of how they travel. 

Mia: Our gardens are growing all the time.  It's brought people together and made the school a greener and more welcoming place.

My name is Daming. I have some photos show some of my experiences. Itook (they) with my first camera at the age of 10. At the age of 14, I got another camera as a gift. After that, I took many photos of people and buildings with it. Among these photos, you can see my  sister Meimei (stand) and smiling in front of the Diwang Building. The building has a (high) of over 380 metres. It is one of (tall) buildings in Asia.

Emily is preparing for her school's speech competition. This year the  is about the country's traditions. Students take part in the competition need to introduce the traditions of their country. Because the  is higher this year, Emily is nervous even though she knows about her culture well. She has to practise her speech in her free time over and over again until she feels confident. 

Before the day of the event, Emily  her speech in class. Her voice was clear and her speech was just like her practice. The worries that once troubled her faded away. Her classmates and teacher watched with great interest, impressed by her calm confidence. They were sure Emily was in with a !

How will Grade 9 students keep their memories of the past three years? There are only three months left before graduation for them. Students in Class 6, Grade 9 in Dongchen Experimental School get a chance to make a class magazine called School Time, They are recording their junior high school life by presenting articles and photos.
