  • 3、Animal waste is becoming a treasure! Scientists find a special way to use animal poop (粪便). They call their project "Poo Zoo". This project is really helpful to protect wildlife.

Animal poop has living cells (细胞) with DNA. The DNA gives us important information for wild animal breeding programs (繁育计划) and protection. This is very important as the number of wildlife is quickly dropping.

Usually, getting a piece of skin from wildlife to study is hard. People have to catch the animals and make them sleep. This not only takes a lot of time but also can be bad for the animals.

Professor Suzannah Williams from the University of Oxford created the "Poo Zoo" project. The idea is to collect living cells from animal poop and grow the cells in labs (实验室).

Starting with mouse poop, the team tried many ways to collect the cells and keep them fresh. After improving their skills, scientists turned to elephant poop. They cleaned the poop carefully and took out the living cells. Professor Williams told CNN that the team successfully collected living elephant cells many times.

However, it's not easy to make life from these living cells now. Poop has a lot of bacteria (细菌), so scientists need a better way to grow healthy cells, said Vice.

(1)、What can the "Poo Zoo" project help do?

(2)、What is the DNA from animal poop used for?

(3)、From which animals' poop did scientists collect living cells?

(4)、Why is it difficult to make life from these living cells now?

(5)、What do you think of this project? And why?

A cute animal with four legs? Actually, dogs are much more than that! There are many secrets about them. Let's take a closer look into the world of dogs and learn more about them. Dogs are famous for their great senses. With over 100 million scent cells (嗅觉细胞), dogs can smell thousands of scents. And they can hear sounds from farther away than humans because of their special ear shape. These abilities make dogs important in many places. For example, in places like train stations and airports, police dogs can find out dangerous things like drugs and bombs. And for blind people, guide dogs are very helpful. They can help them "see" and travel around safely.

Just like humans, most dogs have a favourite paw. They might be right-pawed or left-pawed. To figure out which paw your dog prefers, you can watch it walk and see which paw it usually puts forward first. Dogs not only walk on paws, but also sweat through them. Because of this, their paws are easy to get dirty with bacteria (细菌), and sometimes they even give off a popcorn-like smell.

Dogs have many ways to communicate. One way they do this is by smelling each other's butts (屁股). The special smell can help dogs learn about others' gender ♀♂, feelings, and health. Dogs also use body language to "show" their feelings. For example, they may turn in circles to say hello or hold their tails between their legs when they are afraid or sad.

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). Recently, a group of Americans who taught English in other countries shared their experiences. They realized that misunderstanding happened in their daily life quite often, even over something as simple as "yes" and "no".

On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific (太平洋), Lisa thought people didn't notice her. It was a hot day. She went into a store and asked, "Do you have cold drinks?" The woman there didn't say anything. Lisa asked again. Still, the woman said nothing. Later, Lisa learned the woman had answered her-she raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which means "yes" in Micronesia.

Jenny remembered her experience in Bulgaria, a European country. She went to a restaurant famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, "Do you have cabbage today?" He nodded his head. Jenny waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means "no".

Tom had a parallel problem when he was in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the heads. He thought some didn't understand, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You need to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean "yes" or "no".

Animals from elephants to horses to dogs always show their sadness about others' death, but less is known about the house cat. If a human or another animal close to them dies, would a cat feel sad? A team of researchers from Oakland University tried to answer the question. They interviewed 412 cat owners about their cats' actions after another cat or dog in the family passed away.

They found that cats showed actions related to sadness—such as eating and playing less after the death of a fellow (同类的) pet. Besides, some cats also spent more time alone and slept more after the death. All of these actions mean they may be in sadness. Jennifer Vonk, a member of the researchers, said, "It's not that I want the cats to be sad. We just want to know if our pets would miss us when something bad happens to us."

Researchers didn't see "big changes" in cats, but these changes mirrored similar changes we found in dogs before. It means dogs develop in a more social way than cats.

Vonk added that cat owners who felt sadder themselves reported more sadness in their living cats, and this point might make a difference to the result. Therefore, more studies in this area would be necessary before we could draw any conclusions (结论). But Vonk, a cat owner herself, said that cats might experience sad feelings in ways that we didn't know before.

Many teenagers are becoming interested in FAST. Lin Tao, a 15-year-old student, began to love astronomy after his science class talked about FAST. He now reads space books every week because FAST makes knowledge of the universe easy to get. For Lin Tao, FAST is not just a big telescope but a door to the starry sky.

A survey by a local science group shows that 86% of 400 students want to know more about space after learning about FAST.
