    The Silk Road

The Silk Road was not only a road, but also a large group of busy roads that connected China with Europe and the Middle East. It started about 2,230 years ago and played an important role in the development of economic (经济的) and cultural exchanges (交换) across countries.

These old roads had busy business ports (港口). They also had lively markets that were offered as the center for the exchange of products. Silk was one of the most popular products, but many other products also traveled along these roads. For example, tea, china (瓷器), and spices (香料) traveled from the Eastern countries to the Western countries. At the same time, the West exchanged animals, paintings, fruits, etc.

The exchange along the roads had not only products but also ideas and cultures. The ideas from one area would find their way to another, improving societies and understanding. For example, papermaking appeared in China, and then reached Europe and other countries. It also changed the way countries communicated with each other.

One of the most famous travelers to use the Silk Road was the Italian traveler Marco Polo. His journey to China during the 13th century opened up a window into the East for Europeans. To introduce the customs and geography of the areas he visited, he wrote a famous book, The Travels of Marco Polo.

By understanding the Silk Road, we can know how we keep in touch with the world for centuries, and how products and cultural exchanges continue to shape our whole society. Today, the idea of "the Belt and Road Initiative" is put forward by China to develop the economy and cooperation (合作) among Asia, Europe, and Africa.

(1)、When did the Silk Road start?

(2)、What did the Eastern and Western countries exchange along the roads?

(3)、Why did Marco Polo write the famous book?

(4)、What do you think of the Silk Road? Why do you think so? (Please give two reasons.)

  • 4、Do you have a fear (恐惧) of public speaking? Do you ever get nervous when speaking in front of a group of people?

I remember I used to be deathly afraid of public speaking. My legs would get weak as I made my way in front of the audience. My mouth would tremble (发抖) as I would begin to say the first few words. I would avoid eye contact (避免眼神接触) unless I find someone with a smiling face, there is a way to overcome a fear of public speaking.

Understand the cause of the fear

Find out why it's a fear in the first place. The main reason is the fear of being embarrassed (窘迫的). Most of you are afraid of being laughed at, doing anything foolish or having the audience judge (判断) you. When there are other people who might judge you or think badly of you, this causes you to get nervous.

    Change your mindset (心态)

Try not to think about yourself and what the audience might think of you. Instead, think about the audience and how you can best deliver (传递) your message across. Then, you will be able to get over this fear.

    Practice

It's best to practice in front of a supporting (支持的) group of people. This will not only make public speaking easier but also help you gain confidence. The more you practice it, the easier it will get.

The way I was able to get over my fear of speaking came in two periods (时期). The first period was in high school. I entered the speech class, and all I wanted was to get passed. I didn't care about winning. Even when I forgot what to say, I didn't get nervous. The next period was during my job as a trainer. My job was to motivate (激励) people. So gradually, my focus went from thinking about myself to not caring about that, and finally to thinking about my audience. In the two periods, my mindset changed from the mindset of fear to the mindset of power.

So overcoming a fear of public speaking comes down to having the right mindset and practice.

  • 18、阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成句子。

The other day, my friends and I talked about the rules we have in school. At our school, we have to wear uniforms every day. The problem is that all my classmates think the uniforms are ugly. We think young people should look smart and we would like to wear our own clothes. Our teachers believe that if we did that, we would concentrate (集中注意力) more on our clothes than our studies. We disagree. We would feel more comfortable and that is good for studying. If we can't do that, we should be allowed to design our own uniforms. That would be a good way to keep both teachers and students happy.

It's also probably a good idea for parents to allow teenagers to study in groups during the evening. I know we get noisy sometimes, but we learn a lot from each other. We also think that vacations should be longer. At present they' re too short. Longer vacations would give us time to do things like volunteering. Last summer I had an opportunity to volunteer at the local hospital, but I couldn't because I had to go back to school. It would be a good experience for me because I want to be a doctor when I'm older.
