Then the white rabbit saw Alice. 

"What are you doing here, Mary Ann?" he asked. "Go home right away and bring me a fan and a pair of white gloves." 

Alice was too afraid to tell him she was not Mary Ann, a servant. So she ran off. 

"I'll try and find his fan and gloves," she thought when she ran. 

She soon came to a little house. There was a name on the door, "W. Rabbit." 

She went inside without knocking on the door. "How strange this all is!" she thought. "I am running errands for a rabbit. Perhaps Dinah will ask me to run errands for her." 

She ran up the stairs into a little bedroom, and there she found a pair of gloves and a fan. She picked them up and was going to leave when she saw a bottle. It was near a looking glass. On the side of the bottle were the words "Drink me." 

"I'll drink some," Alice thought. "Perhaps it will make me grow again. I am tired of being so small." 

She quickly drank half the bottle. Before she could get out of the little house, she started to grow. Soon, she was so big, she could not move in the room. 

"That was a silly (傻的) thing to do," she thought. "Why didn't I take the bottle with me and drink from it outside the house?"

The Seven Ravens

As the only daughter, the girl was heartbroken after learning her brothers turned into ravens because  her. She set out to save them, with her  (parents) ring. After a long journey, she reached the morning star. It gave her a tiny bone—the key  the Glass Mountain Castle. Her brothers lived there. 

She wrapped it in a cloth and went straight there.  she arrived, she opened the cloth. Unluckily, the bone  (be) gone. Desperately, she cut her finger, letting her blood  (open) the lock—for only a family's sacrifice could break the spell. 

A dwarf welcomed her and prepared dinner. As she waited for the ravens, she placed  (she) ring in the last glass.  (sudden), wings fluttered—the ravens returned! She hid, watching as they drank. When the  (seven) raven found the ring, he recognized it and cried, "God grant our sister may be here! We shall be free!" Then she stepped forward, and the ravens turned into her brothers. Overjoyed, they hugged each . Hand in hand, they returned home. 

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (《绿野仙踪》) is a modern fairy tale of a little girl called Dorothy. She lives on the dry, gray grassland of Kansas.  One day, when they are carried away during a cyclone (旋风) to the magical land of Oz, Dorothy meets a kind witch (女巫) who tells her to go to the Emerald City and asks the Wizard to help her go back home. Dorothy follows the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and on her way she makes three good friends: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion.  Oz is full of color, but finally Dorothy learns that there's no place like home. 

Lyman Frank Baum is the writer. Baum was born in a small town in the state of New York in 1856. His father was a businessman and the family was rich.  Because he was a shy, quiet boy whose health wasn't very good, he didn't go to school and studied at home with a teacher. 

He loved reading. His favorite stories were traditional European fairy tales. When Baum wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the age of 44, he wanted to write something different. He mixed reality with the fantasy and magic of traditional European fairy tales in his book. 

 He was a news reporter, a chicken farmer, a salesman and an actor. He ran his own theater and wrote plays for it. He even had a shop. But most of his careers ended in failure. In 1882, Baum married Maud Gage. Together they had four sons. 

In 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Ozcame out and it was an immediate success. The book is put into over 50 languages.

In the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), there was a man called Chen Yaozi. He was quite good at archery (箭术) . He always hit (射中) the bull's eye, and hardly missed the target (靶子). 

When he was doing his daily practice one day, many people came around him. And they shouted for him excitedly each time he hit the target. This made him feel happy with himself. But among the people stood an old oil seller (卖油翁) and he wasn't in high spirits like others. 

"Doesn't he think I did well?" Chen thought. "Did you see anyone better than me before?" Angry and surprised, he called the seller over and asked. 

"No," answered the old man. 

"What do you think of my archery then?" 

The old man answered, "Nothing special. You became skilled through much practice. That's all." 

"Is it so? Why not show what you can do?" Chen said. 

The oil seller put a gourd (葫芦) bottle on the ground and put a coin with a square hole (方孔钱) in the centre over the top. He then scooped (用勺儿舀) some oil, held it high in the air and poured it into the bottle, not making the coin wet. People around the old man shouted for him excitedly. But he said, "This is nothing special. I can do it because I practiced every day." With these words, he left.
