World Letter Writing Day

September 1st is the perfect day to write a letter because it's World Letter Writing Day. The day  to keep the art of letter writing in our digital (电子) age. In the past, letter writing was the  means of long-distance communication. However, with modern communication like email and text messages, letter writing is less popular. Few people take the time to write letters. 

Even though new technologies  us with much faster ways to communicate these days, letter writing is still  for a number of reasons. First, writing a letter to someone shows them that you really care about them, because you take the time and effort to do something people seldom do nowadays. And we  think handwriting is an important skill you shouldn't lose, because writing by hand  typing can help your brain in a different way and improves your language processing and reading skills.  reason is that writing a letter makes you really think about what you're writing. Far too often, we quickly send texts and emails, but we don't think about  our words do to the person we're talking to. With a handwritten letter, you are made to be more careful with the words you choose. 

So, what can we do  this day? The best way is to write a letter to someone. It could be a  who lives miles away, or the friends that you have lost touch with over time.

The Torch (火把) Festival is one of the most important festivals for some ethnic (少数的) groups in China. 

During this festival, people get together in large numbers. They light torches and walk through the streets.  And they create a beautiful and warm scene. 

People dress up in their traditional and colorful clothes.  There are also many performances such as acrobatics (杂技), traditional sports competitions and so on. 

 Delicious dishes such as grilled (烤的) meat and special cakes are prepared. Families and friends come together to enjoy the big meal and share the good times. 

In a word, the Torch Festival shows the rich culture and traditions of some ethnic groups.  It is a festival full of love, togetherness and celebration. 

The Qingming Festival usually falls around April 5 each year. "Qingming" is the fifth solar term (节气) of a year, and it's the only solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar that is also an important traditional festival. For thousands of years, Chinese people carry out different customs to spend the festival. 

It's a festival in memory of the dead. That's why it's also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day. Traditionally, people show respect for their ancestors by visiting their tombs, they would also offer food and flowers to their ancestors. 

"Qingming" comes as temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases. Therefore, there has been the tradition of planting trees during the festival. 

In China, willows (柳树) are considered magical, so during the festival, people wear soft willow branches and also place them on their front doors to drive away ghosts and evil spirits. 

Flying kites is also an important custom during the festival. In the past, people would cut the string to let a kite fly freely. It's believed that doing so brings good luck and even keeps people away from illnesses. 

No celebration is complete without delicious food. With this in mind, sweet green rice balls are a popular dish to eat during the festival. They are made of a mixture of glutinous rice powder (糯米粉) and green vegetable juice with something sweet in them. 

Ever since ancient times, Chinese people have had the custom of going for an outing during the festival. With the development of the society, the festival has become a popular tourism holiday for spring outings and flower viewing. 

This year, people across China enjoyed a three-day public holiday during the festival. Many people booked on the Internet before the holiday. Places such as Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai were among the top choices in bookings for the holiday. Tianshui in Gansu Province was also famous for spicy hotpot during the festival. 

Founded in 1971, a social service organization is trying to care for any person in need. It serves 15, 000 poor people each year. In the beginning, when its members were unable to fully meet certain people's needs at work, they often entered into discussions, finding how they could help on their own. When Executive Director Bill Sullivan saw what was happening, he had an idea. He organized a team with workers to show their care. And he called the team "the village"

The team wants to help someone achieve his or her goals (目标) and it wants to do so by having workers give away their own time, money, skills, and anything else they could offer. People who work at the organization are encouraged to care for others. "The cool thing about ‘the village' is that we believe in our workers and the power (力量) of care that lies within them, " said Sullivan. 

"The village" allows people to feel comfortable giving what they can, as all donations are unnamed. "Someone who gives away a car is no more important than the person who sits and listens to someone to let him or her feel loved and cared for, " said Sullivan. 

The first person getting help from "the village" was a homeless man. Within just three weeks, "the village" provided him with a car, an apartment and other things. The man said that he had lost all hope before he came across "the village". It gave him a chance to start over. He wanted to give back by volunteering to help others and make a difference in the community. 

"The power of care is clear and has lasting influences — not just on the people who receive donations, but also on those giving away things. It can lead to an understanding of ourselves — who we are, and how important we actually are, " Sullivan said. The power of care is great because it provides a goal — something we all try to achieve within our lives. Many call this love. 

New Year's Eve is often celebrated to welcome a happy and healthy year. And different countries have different ways to celebrate it. Here is how some countries celebrate New Year's Eve.
