Have you ever met people who are like the people I'll mention below? They have a very poor sense of (direct). When they are on the street, they cannot tell the east from the west or the south from the north. Certainly, they can ask others for help. But I have to say that asking the way in a(n) (polite) way can "give" people a bad feeling.

One day I was stopped by a man. He asked, "Where is the Friendship Building?" To be honest, I wasn't very happy about what he said. Why couldn't he ask in a more polite way? With a little bad impression made by his words, I didn't pay much attention the place where he wanted to go and told him a wrong answer. Just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building! But I had no time (turn) back and look for him.

"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. However, it's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The excuse may be real, or not. The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, of finishing a talk, people don't say exactly that they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the game of language.

Giving Directions in Different Places

If you ask people of different countries "Could you tell me the way to the post office?", you will get different answers.

In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the corner. The post office is across from the bus stop."

In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, "Go north two miles."

People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, "Follow me." Sometimes if а person doesn't know the answer to your question, he or she, like а New Yorker, might say, "Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know." Theу usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan! You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language.

Don't be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. Your place might be around the symbols.

Don't be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. We all do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city. But always make sure you can ask others for help!

If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with "could" "may" or "might". It's also possible to use "can" in some special situations. In the past, "can" was not used when asking for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use "Can you lend me…?" or "Can I have…?" In the USA, this is still considered to be wrong and "May I have…?" is preferred.

It's common to use "Could you lend/hand/give…?" Here are a lot you can use: "May/Can I borrow…?" "Could/Can you lend me…?" "May I have…?" "Could you hand/give me…?" Do not begin a sentence with "please", but you can add "please" at the end of the sentence to be polite.

Paula was going to a birthday party. The party was at a friend's house which was a little far away from her home. Paula's friend carefully wrote the1 to the party. When can I visit the White House?
