Animals are an important part of nature, yet throughout history, humans have caused great harm to them. Many animals have been killed for their fur, feathers, or meat. 

 Firstly, the destruction of living space is a major reason. With the development of cities and industries, the living areas of wild animals are being destroyed. Secondly, illegal hunting also brings a serious problem. For example, many endangered animals are hunted for their valuable body parts. 

Endangered animals play an important role in keeping ecological balance (生态平衡). Each species (物种)has its own place in nature, and the dying-out of any species can lead to a series of ecological problems.  They may provide important information for the development in science and medicine. 

Fortunately, many people and organizations are working hard to protect endangered animals.

However, protecting endangered animals is still a long-term task. As students, we should raise our awareness of animal protection and join in voluntary activities. We should also avoid buying products made of endangered animals and support sustainable(可持续的)development

New artificial intelligence (AI) tool can be used to forecast our future health conditions. according to the scientists in London. Scientists from a number of different universities and hospitals have been trying out a tool called Foresight. 

It has been trained on the healthcare data （数据）of real patients, and it uses deep learning to pick out patterns in the data and identify future diseases, medicine, and conditions. In other words, it's a simulation （模拟） of what someone's future health will look like. 

The results of the tests on Foresight have come out in The Lancet Digital Health. Three different models of Foresight were trained on sets of health data from more than 800, 000 patients in the UK and the US. 

In order to check how correct Foresight was, the scientists compared its forecasts with the medical records from a smaller number of patients they studied. It's said that its forecasting reports were 88% correct. 

"But this isn't a tool for forecasting the future, " said Zeljko Kraljevic, the study's first writer, "and it isn't designed to help patients diagnose （诊断） themselves. " He said it could be used to help doctors to make decisions about a patient. "The more data it receives, the better it gets, " he added. 

The scientists need more testing on the tool, and they' re looking for hospitals to help test a high-graded model called Foresight 2. 

It was the last chance the aliens gave before killing the human beings. A team of grandfathers was chosen to compete against the aliens in an important football match!

The wise old grandfathers with their young and strong bodies easily beat the team of aliens. When they travelled back to the present day, they became old again but this time no one made fun of them or mocked（嘲笑）their age. Instead, they were treated as real heroes. 

China has started testing a pet-friendly service on some high-speed trains between Beijing and Shanghai since April 9, 2025. 

This service enables passengers to book a special place for their cats or dogs, and is being tested on 10 trains between five major stations: Beijing South, Jinan West, Nanjing South, Hangzhou East and Shanghai Hongqiao. Passengers must book tickets through the 12306 website at least two days before their travel. 

Each pet must be a healthy cat or dog, weighing no more than 15 kg and no taller than 40cm. A pet health card is needed for this service. 

·During the trip, pets are placed in special boxes. Workers check the pets at least every two hours. Water can be provided if necessary, but owners' feeding and mid-journey visits are not allowed. 

Passengers with pets must arrive 2-6 hours early to finish the check-in. After arrival, owners can collect their pets within one hour through text messages or phone calls. During the testing period（时期）, prices are 30% lower. For example, the Beijing-Shanghai route (over 1, 000km)costs 460 yuan instead of 658 yuan. Besides, a trip under 1, 000 km costs 360 yuan. 

Many pet owners are excited after hearing the news. However, some worry that pets will feel unpleasant. A woman from Shanghai with two cats said, "I hope there will be special carriages where pets can stay with their owners in the future. " To solve this problem, railway officials（官员） said they were planning to improve travel services for pet owners. 

Last Sunday, I went to a1 with my parents. The sun was shining, and the trees looked green and tall. While we were walking along a small path, we heard a weak cry. We2 and saw a little bird lying on the ground. Its left wing was3 , and it couldn't stand up. My mom said, "Let's take it home and try to help. "

China is such a big county. Are the north and the south very different? The following are  (opinion) of some teenagers. 

Thirteen-year-old Linda from Fujian thinks that one of  (big) differences is the language. Each place in China has  (they) own dialects(方言). For example, people in her hometown Xiamen speak the Minnan dialect. But visitors from the north can hardly understand it! Luckily, China has spent much time  (teach) people Mandarin, especially older people. Her grandma didn't speak Mandarin before. When she moved to the city five years ago, she began to learn it  community volunteers. Now she is 64 and can speak Mandarin  (perfect) !

Consider what you are good at.

It's true that things like money are important, but don't let them lead you down the wrong path. Follow your heart and your characters.  If you don't like work which needs lots of attention, think long and hard before you decide to do something like applying to study engineering at university. 

 They start a job, love it at once and stick at it. But it isn't always like that. So remember you are allowed to change your mind. It's not necessary to worry for years. Your first decision isn't forever. Maybe the right job for you is right around the corner!

Some people choose their career simply because they think they'll make huge lots of money. OK, if that is what you want. However, in general people are pleased with their career when they feel they are doing something valuable for others. It doesn't have to be voluntary work.  Just don't forget, money is not everything. 

Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey aged 15 feel uncomfortable. After 7 pm, David leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet for more than 2 hours instead, waiting until the last minute. Do you have the same experience?

Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. "One big cause for procrastination( 拖 延 症 ) is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others ' expectations, " Professor Peter Stone says. 

Professor Stone did a study in 2022, asking procrastinators to finish a task before bedtime at night. The results showed that they did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. However, they thought they did better. Even, the procrastination led to sleeplessness, which caused many other health problems for them. 

For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you've been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving. 

Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might turn the lights down at 10 pm. When the lights are dim（昏暗）, you'll start going to bed. It works for most people. 

Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you've run 3 km, enjoy your favourite ice-cream. But be careful: it won't work the other way around. 

"Who did this?" asked my teacher. Thirty children tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out. The class was silent(寂静的). 

"Who did this?" she asked again. She never became angry, but she was this time. She held up a piece of broken glass to show us that she had already known what happened. 

"Oh, oh, " I thought. I was the one who broke the window. But I did not do it on purpose. It was caused by a bad throw of a baseball. Why did it have to be me?

If I admitted it, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? "My father will get angry at me, " I thought. I didn't want to raise my hand, but something much stronger than me pull itup. 

"I did it, " I said. Then I was silent. It was hard enough to say what I had. 

My teacher went to one of our bookshelves and took down a book. She then began walking towards my desk. I had never known my teacher to hit a student, but I feared she was going to start with me. 

"I know how you like birds, " she said as she stood looking down at my face. "Here is the field guide about birds that you always check out from our school library. It is yours now. We have got a new one for the school. You will not be punished(惩罚) . But remember, it's only for your honesty. "

I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide, the one that I had been saving up all my money to buy. 

Have you ever imagined living on the sea? This idea could soon come true. The Maldives（马尔代夫）is building the world's first floating city and plans to complete it in 2027. 

The city is like a man-made island. People will live on floating platforms ( 平 台 ). These platforms are connected and placed along a hexagonal grid (六角网格). Natural coral reefs (珊瑚礁) will be grown around the city to stop the floating city from moving around, so people who live here won't feel seasick. 

People will live a self-sufficient life in the floating city. Electricity will be powered by solar energy. Sewage (污水) will be treated there. Also, the island is not far away from land. It takes only 10 minutes to travel by boat between there and the capital of the Maldives. 

Cool as it seems, the city is designed to solve problems. The Maldives is one of the world's lowest-lying countries. Most of its islands including the capital stand about only 1 meter above sea level. And now climate change has brought a big problem – the rising sea level. According to CNN, 80 percent of the country's land area will be under the sea by the end of the century. 

"We all know, the Maldives is special and it attracts visitors from all of the world. In the Maldives, we cannot stop the waves, but we can rise with them, " Mohamed Nasheed, former president of the country, told Newsweek magazine. 

Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the captain helper of a volunteer fire company. I still remember my first fire. I was the 1 volunteer there at that time. The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst 2 of her life. At midnight, she was 3 outside in the pouring rain, under an umbrella, barefoot, while her house was in fire. 

The other two volunteers, who had arrived just before me, were asked to go inside and4 the homeowner's dog. The captain then waved me over. He said, "Bezos, l need you to go upstairs and get this woman a pair of5 . " So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but I went up the stairs, past the "real" firefighters, who nearly finished putting out the fire at this point, into the master bedroom to get her shoes. 

Now I know what you're thinking, but I'm no hero. (Laughter). 6 the other volunteers were with the precious dog, I got the shoes. We took our "treasures" outside hurriedly to the7 homeowner to cheer her up. Not surprisingly, theirs received much more attention than mine. 

A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner to 8 us for saving her home. She remembered that the act of kindness9 all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes, which made her full of warmth.
