Thang-ga (唐卡) is a special kind of painting.  It was found only in Xizang, China.  It started from the Tang dynasty (唐朝).  Thang-ga paintings show Xizangan people's lives.  In recent years, Thang-ga paintings have caught the public's attention.  At the same time, the Chinese government has also tried hard to protect the art. 

The colors of Thang-ga paintings look wonderful and special.  Because of the special environment of Xizang and the excellent skills of artists, the paints (颜料) used in Thang-ga paintings are different from other paints.  They were made from minerals like gold and silver, as well as some plants.  The paints were made by hand and the beautiful colors could last (持续) for hundreds of years. 

However, with the development of technology, people now use cheaper and easily-made chemicals to make Thang-ga paints.  The traditional paints used in Thang-ga paintings took a lot of work and they were made in many secret ways.  Later people stopped making the paints and forgot about them.  So the skills needed to make them were almost lost.  The traditional Thang-ga paintings are difficult to find now. 

Museums are a window into history.  May 18 is International Museum Day.  It is the perfect time  those old things you once discussed in class.  

Sadly, a lot of students think museums are boring.  They don't know that museums can be really .  Some old people like museums because a museum  them of the life in the past.  In fact, everyone should visit museums  you are old or young.  

In Iowa, US, there is an ice-cream museum.  It brings back the sweet memories of ice-cream back to  life.  You can learn the history of ice-cream.  The  ice-cream cone (甜筒) came out in 

1904.  Since then, people  ice-cream for almost 2000 years.  If you mix ice together with milk and sweets, you can make ice-cream .  What's more, the museum shows  than 3000 different kinds of ice-cream.  Of course, no one can truly taste  of ice-cream in life.  But it gives you a chance to see the life in the past. 

The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world.  It is about 9 600 000 square kilometers in size.  This is almost the size of the America or China.  The desert covers eleven countries in the north of Africa. 

The Nile runs through the Sahara Desert all year round.  But there are also other rivers running through it seasonally (季节性地).  The geography of the desert includes huge sand dunes (沙丘) and dune fields.  Some of the sand dunes are 80 huge that they can even be over 152 meters high.  But there are also other amazing landforms (地形) in different parts of the desert. 

It is very hot and dry in the Sahara Desert.  The temperature there is usually 30℃.  However, during the hottest months, the temperature can go over 50℃.  Because of the high temperatures and poor conditions of the desert, only a few plants live here, just about 500 kinds.  They also play a role in the number of animals.  In the driest part of the desert, there are only 70 different kinds of animals. 

Today the Sahara's population is around four million.  They move from place to place through the desert.  Because of this there are many different cultures and languages in this area. 

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1.  This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI's GPT-4, but it costs much less to build.  The team spent only $5.  58 million (1/70 of OpenAI's cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months.  This shows that good ideas can beat big money.  

DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths.  Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself.  For example, in a global math test, it got 79. 8% right, slightly higher than Open AI's model.  A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.  

DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change.  On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it.  A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost 10 instead of 300 with other AIs.  Even Meta (a famous U. S.  tech company) top scientist said, "This kind of free AI could change the world. "

US tech companies are worried.  Meta plans to spend over $65 billion on AI research.  Experts say China is catching up fast.  A report in Nature magazine called R1 a "big step forward", proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.  

As a DeepSeek engineer said, "We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use. " With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.  

There are some special events that happen every year, and people often remember them.  Last Children's Day, there was a terrible rainstorm in Mr.  Green's city, the Greens are discussing what they were doing at the time of the rainstorm.

Nowadays, technology is everywhere and it's making our lives more exciting in many ways.  One of the coolest new technologies is DeepSeek.  It can answer all kinds of questions.  It's a super-useful tool that can help middle school students a lot. 

The AI-powered DeepSeek can help students to learn English.  For example, when you are reading an English storybook and meet a new word like "mysterious", you can type it into DeepSeek.  It will not only tell the meaning of the word in Chinese, but also show you how to use it in sentences. 

If you are not good at grammar, DeepSeek is also your good friend.  Maybe you can't tell the difference between "have been to" and "have gone to".  Just ask DeepSeek! It will explain with simple examples.  "I have been to Paris. " means I visited Paris at some point in the past, but I'm not there now.  "Tom has gone to London. " means he is still there or on his way. 

When it comes to writing an English article, DeepSeek can be of great help too.  You can let DeepSeek check your article.  It will find spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes.  And it will even give you some advice on how to make your writing better.  It might suggest adding more interesting details or changing some boring words. 

However, we should remember not to depend on DeepSeek too much.  It's just a tool to help us.  We still need to think and try to solve problems on our own.  Only in this way can we truly improve our English skills.  So, let's make good use of DeepSeek and work hard to achieve better results in our English learning!

One day, Zhou Yu ordered Zhuge Liang to make 100,000 arrows (箭) in ten days.  Zhou Yu thought it was , but Zhuge Liang said, "Give me three days. " Then he asked Lu Su to lend him 20 boats, and the soldiers put some scarecrows (稻草人) in line on the boats.  He  Lu Su not to tell Zhou Yu what was happening.

As soon as the Cao camp heard the shouting and beating, they were so scared that they had to order soldiers  arrows to the boats.  The front of the scarecrows was quickly full of arrows.  After a while, Zhuge Liang had his boat team turned around to get the other side of the scarecrows to face the Cao camp.  When  sides were full of arrows, the soldiers shouted in , "Thank you, Cao Cao, for your arrows. " After they got back to  camp, they collected more than 100,000 arrows in total from the scarecrows.

Do you often forget important things? Do you wish you could remember facts and names more easily? Good news! There are simple ways to improve your memory.  Here are some tips:

Exercise your body to help your brain.   It's great for your brain too! Studies show that regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which helps your memory work better.  Try running, swimming, or even dancing for 30 minutes a day. 

Play memory-improving games properly. Surprisingly, playing certain video games (like puzzles or strategy games) for about 1~2 hours a week can train your brain to remember better.   And they can make your memory stronger. 

Eat brain-boosting foods regularly. Foods like blueberries (which contain antioxidants), broccoli (rich in vitamin K), and nuts (with healthy fats) protect your brain cells.   It is said that eating these foods 3~4 times a week is a wise choice. 

 When you're stressed, your body produces cortisol (皮质醇), a hormone (激素) that can damage brain cells over time.  Simple activities like taking 10 deep breaths, listening to calming music for 15 minutes, or walking in a park can lower your stress levels. 

Get enough sleep every night.  Teenagers who get 8~10 hours of quality sleep each night perform better on memory tests than those who don't sleep enough. 

There are lots of great poets in Chinese history, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and Su Shi. 

The influence of Li Bai, Du Fu and Su Shi on Chinese culture remains great today, and their works continue to be studied by people.
