The Importance of Fire Safety

Last Friday, a storm swept through two villages, destroying (摧毁) fourteen homes completely. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or roofs. One person died, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received minor injuries (轻伤). Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.

Mr. Tan, a farmer, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour. "I was eating with my wife and children when we heard a loud noise," he said. "A few minutes later, part of the house fell down. We tried our best to climb out, but then I found that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but very scared." Mrs. Woo said that her husband just left for work when she felt that the house was shaking. She ran outside at once with her children. "There was no time to take anything," she said. "A few minutes later, the roof came down." 

Soldiers helped to take people out of the flooded area, and the welfare department (福利部门) provided them with food, clothes and shelter (避难所). 

① Water is one of the most useful things on Earth. It gives us life. We think water is something soft and gentle, but sometimes water is so powerful that it can even be destructive (破坏性的). Here we talk about floods. 

② There are two main kinds of floods: flash floods and slow floods. Flash floods are sudden floods of great volumes of water. They overflow (溢出) the banks of the rivers and wash away everything they touch into pieces. Flash floods are destructive. The other type is slow floods. They rise over a long period of time. Usually as more and more rain falls, the water in rivers rises and floods the land. These slow floods happen in every country in the world. 

③ Floods are one of the world's biggest natural killers. When floods happen, crops are damaged, houses are washed away, roads are destroyed, and people are killed. Every year in America water kills over 100 people, most in flash floods. Floods also cause huge economic (经济的) losses. 

④ Floods are a serious problem. Worse still, they may become more powerful and happen more often as global warming becomes more and more serious. Around the world, sea levels will rise, and more lives will be taken by the flood waters of our planet. 

⑤ Floods are a serious natural disaster and we must try to stop them from happening often to protect our lives and homes. 

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. They mostly happen in July, August and September. 

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins. 

A typhoon has three parts. One is called the "eye". In the eye, the wind doesn't move so fast. The second part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and the hardest rain are. The third part is called the "spiral rain belt area (螺旋雨带区)". 

Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2004, Typhoon Rananim killed 164 people in Zhejiang and 24 people were missing. In 2024, Typhoon Yagi landed on Hainan. Thousands of houses and buildings were damaged. 

What can we do when a typhoon hits? Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them. Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes. Listen to the radio or TV for information. If you're told to go to a safer place, do so right away. 

The weatherman said there was going to be a terrible storm, but the weather now was so nice. Molly's mother was going to buy some batteries (电池) in the corner store to prepare for the storm, although Molly thought it wasn't necessary. 

Her mom left and was back an hour later. It was about 6:00 pm, and the sky began to turn dark because of the black clouds. The wind also started to blow. Then the rain started to beat against the windows. The trees shook hard. "I'm scared," Molly said to her mother. 

The storm lasted for about thirty minutes, long enough to make the lights go out and the old trees fall over. Even Dudu, the cat, was staying quietly under the sofa. Molly's mother lit (点燃) some candles so they could see their way around the house. 

"What about dinner?" asked Molly worriedly. Her mother bought some fish when she went to the corner store. "I had a feeling that we wouldn't be able to cook, so I bought the fish and some bread," said Molly's mother. They ate the fish and the bread by candle light. "You know, this is kind of fun. It's almost like camping," said Molly. 

Later that night, the lights came back on. Molly said, "Although it was a scary time, I did have fun." 

On December 18th, 2023, a big earthquake hit Jishishan County in Gansu. 

Ding Xiaolong was asleep at home when the earthquake happened. It woke him up and he quickly ran out of his house. He felt lucky to be alive, but all four members of his friend's family had lost their lives. He was so sad when he knew the bad news.

Ma Shijun, a middle school student, ran out of the dormitory without shoes. And his teachers quickly asked the students to go to the playground. "Seeing more and more rescue personnel (救援人员) arriving, I find myself less afraid," Ma said. 

The members of Blue Sky Rescue Team set up lots of tents. Some villagers offered hot water. Taxi drivers were busy carrying the injured (伤者) to hospitals. Medical teams were racing against time to help those in need. "Life is the most important," said the head of a hospital. "There's hope as long as people are alive."
