Experiencing joy not only makes you feel good, it can also help you in other ways that you might not expect. 

What is joy?

Some people think joy and happiness are the same thing but they' re actually a little bit different. They are both positive emotions.  It often comes from within yourself, lasts longer than happiness and stays with you, no matter what you are doing.

Expert Chris Howard explains that finding joy is really important, "Firstly, finding a thing you enjoy can tell us about who we are as a person, what we like. It can also help us find people who like doing the same thing as you and you can make friends." Feeling joy has also been shown to help lower stress, build your confidence and help you learn better.

Go for it

 Working out what you like is not always easy. "Being brave to try something new will help you to be more confident, it will tell you something about who you are and show others too." says Howard. The most important thing is that if a hobby or activity brings you joy, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Doctors and nurses help keep people healthy. Doctors tell people what medicines they need to take to feel better if they are sick. When people visit a doctor they are called the doctor's patients. The doctor writes a prescription for each patient for the the right medicine that helps to fix what is wrong with them. People get the medicine at a pharmacy or drug store. It's important for people to take the medicine the way the doctor says in order to get better.

Healthy people should visit the doctor for a check up. During the checkup the doctor examines the patient. Sometimes a doctor can find out that something bad is happening in the patient's body before the patient feels sick. The doctor tells the patient what to do to keep from getting sick.

Doctors need a lot of schooling and training. They go to medical school for four years after graduating from college. Some doctors become specialists. These doctors need more training and help people with just certain illnesses.

Nurses help to keep people healthy too. They have lots of training in how to make patients feel better and how to keep them from getting sick! There is a school nurse at schools in case any of the students get sick or hurt during the day. Many nurses work at a hospital to take care of people who are too sick to stay at home. Some nurses work at community clinics to help people in their neighbourhood. Nurses are very important in helping to keep patients healthy.

Juan was very angry! His mom had signed him up late for baseball, and now he was not on his old team. He would not get to play with his friends Tyler, Joe, and Brad. They had played together for four years! And they all loved coach Dave—he was one of the best coaches in the team. Juan was not sure if he wanted to play baseball anymore. He just knew it would not be any fun.

At the first practice, Juan walked slowly to the field. He thought the players did not look very good. Juan was very unhappy. He was thinking about stopping trying when he suddenly realized that Eric, a friend from school, was on the team. Eric was a great baseball player! Juan thought maybe he would stay.

High in the Andes Mountains in Peru, an amazing stone city sits. It is called Machu Picchu (MAH-chuPEEK-chu). The Inca people built it in the 1400s. But then it sat empty for hundreds of years.

Peru is a country in South America. During the 1100s, the Inca people settled there. They built Machu Picchu on the side of a hill. They built terraces（梯田）with stone steps that link each level. In fact, there are more than 3,000 steps in Machu Picchu! The site has nearly 200 stone buildings. They include houses, temples, storerooms, and baths. They had roofs made of dried grasses called thatch.

Building such a city so long ago was not easy. Some of the stones weighed many tons. No one is sure how people moved and lifted the stones.

Historians believe Machu Picchu was used for only about 100 years. It may have been a summer home for the emperor. Or it may have been a place for the Inca to hide from their enemies. When Spanish invaders（侵略者）took over the area around 1572, the Inc a left Machu Picchu.

Today, Machu Picchu is a popular place to visit. But historians want to protect it. Too many visitors will damage the ruins.

Can you imagine that you could design and 3-D print your own house one day? Do you think it possible to print nests（巢；筑巢）for birds? Actually, some seabirds in California will soon nest in homes created by 3-D printers! These clay nests will help protect the birds when they lay their eggs. They will also protect the chicks, or young baby birds.

Conservationists（自然资源保护者）have become more and more worried about the population of many seabirds. There seem to be fewer birds, including the ashy storm-petrel（灰 海燕）. These birds live along the coasts of California, spending winters at sea and summers on coastal islands. They make their nests in holes in the rocks, or in small cracks along the rocky shore（岸）. And they like to use the same nest every year. Over time, predators（捕食者）such as ravens, owls have reduced the population of ashy storm-petrels. Oil spills caused by people can harm the birds, too.

Conservationists decided to help the birds by creating safer nests using clay. Clay is a good choice because it is a natural material that will last almost the whole lifetime of an ashy storm-petrel. The most important is that these clay nests are like the birds' real ones.

Why create clay nests using 3-D printers? Because there are hundreds of birds that need nests! The 3-D printers can make the nests faster than a person doing it by hand, and 3-D printers can print the same designs many times. The people working on these printed homes hope that many other groups will also print them to help provide homes for seabirds in danger. Maybe one day you or your class can print a cl ay home for a special bird!

With a sweet voice,18-year-old Sudanese girl Shamseldin sang a Chinese song before a large crowd in Xi' an during her first visit to China. "I decided to learn Chinese in high school after reading an Arabic version of Yu Hua's novel To Live, a story about an ordinary farmer who kept going even when he lost all his love d ones, " Shamseldin remembered.

Shamseldin spent a total of two years in China as an exchange student. Since she had lost her sight（视力）because of illness, she mainly depended on audio（音频）learning tools while learning Chinese during the years. For example, she followed Chinese conversation tapes to copy the tones. She also recorded new words she learned each day and listened to them again and again. She could always practice patiently whenever she met difficulties. And what touched her deeply was that her teachers changed their ways of teaching to suit her needs.

Shamseldin returned to Sudan in July 2024 with her family. Because of the war, they kept moving until in May last year. During those months, Shamseldin kept teaching her old students Chinese online. She says her dream is to work as a Chinese-Arabic simultancous interpreter（同 声传译员）. And very importantly, while studying in China, she experienced her second"reading" of To Live—this time by listening to it. "Re-reading the hardships of the main character made me reflect on how I should truly live my own life, " she says.
