When we see babies or pets, we can't help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it's different for plants. 

In fact,    ▲    . That's because touching changes their genes and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan of the LaTrobe Institute in Australia gave an explanation. "The lightest touch from a human, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant. "

In order to test the idea, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a result, the mitochondria in the plants had been partly hurt. The mitochondria are the" powerhouse of the cell". The mitochondria produce energy for the rest of the cell in both animals and plants. If this" powerhouse" is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth. Whelan further explained, "If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30percent. " According to Science Alert, repeated touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than others. 

Although the touching does have a strong effect on plants, it's not always bad. The researchers believe, in some ways, it could be helpful. It may help plants fight against insects and bad weather. The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants'reply to touching. And the research might also "open up new ways to optimize growth in the future", Science Alert reported. 

The 2024 UN Chinese Language Day was celebrated globally. It was initiated by the UN in 2010 and is on April 20. The main goal of this day is to expand the international communication value of the language. And it's not restricted to April 20; the celebration lasts throughout the entire month. 

Before April 20, cultural events focusing on"Chinese language and mutual learning" were organized in countries in South Asia, Europe, and Africa. UNESCO, a special agency of the UN, initiated a five-day exhibition at its Paris headquarters on April 15 to display how Chinese calligraphy, ink painting, and folk mythology are featured in children's picture books. 

While the UNESCO exhibition was held in Paris, musical events featuring Chinese folk songs like Hundreds of Birds Worshiping the Phoenix took place at the UN Office in Nairobi(UNON), Kenya. Zainab Hawa Bangura, the director-general of UNON, said at the local Chinese Language Day celebration that these events can help deepen the world's understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. 

Linguistic analyst Liao told the reporter that when it comes to the designs of Chinese characters, the Chinese language carries a lot of cultural connotations that reveal the cultural philosophy, folk customs, and world views of the Chinese people. He also emphasized that apart from African countries, nearby Asian countries such as the Republic of Korea, Thailand, and Nepal are filled with Chinese language learners. 

During an event for the day in Kathmandu, Nepal, the Chairman of the Nepal LanguageCommission, Gopal Thakur, stated that the Chinese language has become one of the languages of employment in the country, and the goal of promoting Chinese is strongly supported by the local government. 

To facilitate the further spread of Chinese in Latvia, the Panda Chinese textbook was recently launched in this eastern European country. Panda Chinese is the first textbook for the locals written in Chinese, Latvian, Russian, and English. 

In addition to overseas celebrations, the 2024 UN Chinese Language Day was also commemorated at Beijing Language and Culture University. The event welcomed over 300overseas students from countries like Japan, Vietnam, and the United Arab Emirates.

In our daily lives, WeChat is really hot now. Many people express themselves, exchange ideas and deliver information by WeChat. 

There are a number of reasons for WeChat to be popular. To begin with, WeChat is a cheap way of communication, which cuts down a great deal of the cost made by phone calls. Next, WeChat is to the taste of most people. It's attractive and lots of functions are loved wildly. What's more, convenience also leads to its popularity. It is available no matter where we are. 

However, it has problems, too. First of all, our IDs might be revealed when we use WeChat and we could be in danger. Secondly, we may spend more time on WeChat instead of with our family. As a result, our relationship with our family could break down. The last problem is that our attention might be drawn too much and sometimes we may find it difficult to focus on study. 

There is no doubt that WeChat will improve as time goes by. So let's look forward to the better WeChat and have more fun with it. 

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by 1 own efforts. 

I learned this 2 from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school 3 a weak football program. 

It was a tradition for the school's old team to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn't even 4 for the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was 5 because I knew we were sure to win. But unluckily, we were defeated. I couldn't believe I had got into such a 6 . Thinking hard about it, I came to 7  that my team might not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were depending on me. I had to change my attitude about their 8 . 

I started doing anything I could to help them build confidence. The most 9 thing is that I began to treat them like winners. That summer, when the other teams enjoyed their vacations, we met every day and 10 passing and kicking the football. 

Six months after suffering our defeat, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. 11 , we faced the number one team. I felt that we would be winners 12 we lost the game. But that wasn't what happened. My boys beat the 13 team inGeorgia, giving me the most exciting moment of my life!

From the experience, I learned a lot about how the attitude of the leader can make a 14 to a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I15 and encouraged them. I helped them to see themselves differently and they built themselves into winners.
