Whether or not there is life on other planets is one of the great mysteries of our time. Some people are sure that other life forms exist(存在) and say they may have already paid us a visit. Of course there are also many people who believe that other life forms can't exist and that Earth is the only inhabited(有人居住的) planet in the whole universe.

One man who thinks that other forms of life are almost certain to be out there is one of the world's most famous scientists, Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that aliens(外星人) are very likely to exist and they might not be quite as friendly as we imagine.

The universe, Hawking says, has 100 billion galaxies. Each one of them has hundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth can't be the only planet with life on it. Most life forms, he thinks, will be simple, but with so many different life forms out there, some could be quite clever and some could even be dangerous.

And if they are out there, Hawking believes that contact with them might be the end for us. If they have the technology to travel to reach us, then in his opinion they might only see Earth as a place of valuable resources. They may simply come to Earth, take what they want, destroy the rest and then leave again.

Hawking ever said, "If aliens ever visit us, I think the result will be like when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, and that didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans."

Hawking is not the only one who believes in clever life forms outer space. Lord Rees, another famous scientist, recently said that aliens could be so highly developed that they might exist in forms that are too difficult for us to understand.

So, maybe it's time to forget our ideas of little green men who come in peace, stop sending rockets outside of our solar system, and pretend that we really are alone in the universe.

For the past ten years, my dad and I have attended the same school—he as an officer and I as a student. When I was younger, all that my dad said was right and anything he did I naturally1 . We played games together, and stayed up late reading bedtime stories. I could 2 my dad taking me to school, running into him 3 during the day and riding home with him every afternoon.

As I grew older, we were not as 4 as we used to be. He wasn't cool any more. He wore his socks too high, listened to 5 country music and laughed too loudly in front of my friends. He became a total embarrassment(尴尬)

However, the things that happened in school were even 6 . I remembered one thing that happened in seventh grade. My dad came to our New Year party, dressed up as Donald Duck, guitar in hand, singing terrible songs. Just 7 me! I ran away.

This continued into high school, however, things started to 8 around the time of my 10th-grade physics project. The 9 was to build a wood bridge with the best strength-to-weight ratio(比率). All the students and physics teachers10 . So did my dad, the only officer! Embarrassed,11 , I ran away. However, later when I learned from my friends that my dad 12 all the competitors and won everyone's respect, I found that mixed in with my embarrassment was a touch of13 .

I began to recognize that we have many of the same values. No matter how much I had tried to run away from him, he still 14 me.

I feel lucky to have such an unusual father. The 15 I have developed with my dad over the years has made me look back and see how I've grown.

Last week I went on a perfect school trip with my classmates. We visited the science museum and I think it was really interesting. We got there so fast by train and we saw some farms and villages along the way. At the museum, I learned a lot about robots and I was quite interested in that. I didn't know they could even play chess with us. It was cool. Then the guide taught us how to make a model robot. I took a lot of photos as well. After that, I went to the gift shop and bought some lovely gifts for my parents. They weren't expensive. All in all, it was an exciting day. 

How to Be an Interesting Person

An interesting person is very popular. And to be an interesting person will help you live an easy life. But how can you become interesting? Here are some ways to help you.

Try learning new things

An interesting person lives a colorful life. If you take up new work or new hobbies, you will become open-minded, talented and creative.  So, it is necessary to try learning new things.

Insist on doing sports

Developing a habit of doing sports can help you become interesting. When doing sports such as playing basketball, you will make more friends.  In this way, you will be an interesting person.

Communicate with different people

 When you communicate with different people, it will bring you different advantages. Different people share different ideas. They will enlarge your knowledge and enrich your life. They may open up a new world to you. It's helpful to make you become an interesting person. 

Everyone likes talking, but only a few people enjoy listening. In fact, talking too much won't make you attractive. Instead, listening carefully to others will help you become patient and wise.

According to the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control, about 350 (million) Chinese smoke. Among , one seventh are teenagers. Sun Jiangping of Beijing University said, "Teenagers can get cigarettes easily, especially when their parents smoke or shops sell cigarettes to them. It's very important for parents to help their children stop smoking."

Li Kun, 11-year-old boy from Beijing said his parents didn't smoke, because they thought smoking could make people feel (bad) ill. They only allowed him (play) with friends without smoking. Living in such a good family helped Li say no to cigarettes. Some of his smoking (classmate) once told Li that smoking made boys look cool, but Li disagreed. He said, "Smoking is not (health) and it's not cool at all. Please stop smoking now!" 

Many students eat their breakfasts on the way to school or in the dining room. But some of them don't really know how to eat well when eating out.

Here is some important (建议). The first is to eat less fast food. The (伤害) of eating too much fast food is having too much fat.

Soda is (又一个的) thing you should watch out for. Cokes and other sodas have a lot of sugar and can slow down a person's (生长), so it's best to drink as little soda as (可能的)

Food in the dining-room may not be as nice as fast food, but it's (事实 上) easier to make healthy choices. In other words, a meal with fish or meat, (蔬菜) and some bread or rice will (提供) you with most useful things that the body needs.

Some snacks, on the other hand, will help keep you going until your (下一个) big meal. It is natural for teenagers, (尤其) boys, to feel hungry during school time. Don't forget to take some foods, like low-fat milk in your school bag.

Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites. "Oh, that game's easy. So not worth the time," one of your friends says. The others agree. Although you enjoy the game quite a lot, not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.

You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同 伴压力), also called peer influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your "peers". As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life. According to Dr Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around, or in situations where they are extremely angry.

Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for sports.

While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us. So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.

There are a lot of advantages of being tall besides being able to reach the top shelf without a step ladder. More cash? That's right. Tall men earn more money, reports Live Science. On the other hand, there is also a huge disadvantage. According to a new study from the University of California Riverside, tall people may be more likely to develop cancer.

Leonard Nunney, a researcher at UC Riverside, reviewed four large population studies about the height and cancer. Nunney studied more than 10,000 cases of cancer, and when he looked at the result given a person's height, he found that the cancer risk rises by 10 percent for every four inches above the average height.

"If you were comparing a five-foot guy to a basketball player who's over seven feet tall, then that basketball player would have around twice the risk of cancer across the board," he said.

In the study, which was published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Nunney explained that one possible reason why tall people have an increased risk of cancer may be because of the simple fact that they have more cells(细胞) in their bodies. The more cell division happens in you, the greater the chances that cells will lead to tumour(肿瘤) growth.

Nunney found that the connection between the height and cancer risk was nearly the same with 18 out of the 23 types of cancer he tracked. He also discovered that skin cancer risk had an unexpectedly strong relationship with the height. And taller women had an increased risk of thyroid(甲状腺) cancer, as well.

Smile Train is a charity that helps millions of children around the world, who suffer from a facial defect. The defect happens when a baby's top lip or mouth doesn't form properly before birth. Eating and drinking is very difficult for these babies. The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new smile, and with it, new hope and a new beginning.

Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their families, sadly, others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often abandoned at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less than an hour and costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to perform the operations.

A Smile Train doctor from the UK said, "Each child who has the operation is given a second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and be happy. Every year I perform hundreds of operations free of cost through Smile Train. Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising. One newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted(收养) by a passenger. This lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. I did the operation and gave hope to the family. Experienced doctors like me share our skills with local doctors. In this way make sure that these operations will always be available."

Something that I learnt from both my parents was the importance of having respect(尊重) for other people. I remember one day when we were travelling on a bus and1 sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me "2 immediately! You have young legs and you don't need to sit down." At the time I felt shamed for being told of 3 , but now I understand. I think children nowadays have 4 that respect and it really makes me angry if I see children sitting down while 5 people are standing.

One area in which we had a lot of rules was table 6 . For example, we weren't allowed to start our meal 7 the oldest person had started. We had to say "thank you" when our food was 8 , and eat everything on our plates before we could 9 the table. We couldn't make any noise when eating. Worse than that, we were only 10 to have sweets at the weekend, as a special 11 if we had been good.

Although my upbringing(养育) was perhaps a bit 12 compared with modern children. I'm very thankful to my parents for giving me a clear 13 in life. Even though I was sometimes 14 , I think it has made me a better person. In my view, children need clear rules, but more than that they need to learn how to get on with 15 people and realize they are not the center of the world.

People in many countries like to have tea with milk and sugar, but Chinese people don't. They like the tea with nothing in it. People in China eat more vegetables than meat. But in America, England and Canada people eat more meat than vegetables. In the USA, people have cold drinks when they are having supper. But Chinese people don't. In America, people have eggs and milk for breakfast. So do Chinese people.
