A study has found that red squirrels are facing growing competition from grey squirrels. However, a team of scientists is working hard to protect these red squirrels. The team has developed a system (系统) to help them, and the system is being tested in some places. 

Red squirrels have lived in the UK for about 10, 000 years, but there are only around 160, 000 left. They once lived in most woodlands but now they have to live in northern England, Scotland, the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England and Anglesey in north Wales. While there are 2.7 million grey squirrels in the UK. Grey squirrels were introduced from North America in 1876. They are bigger, so they are better at competing for food and areas to live in. They also carry a virus called squirrelpox. This virus doesn't harm grey squirrels but can be dangerous for the red squirrels. 

To deal with the problems red squirrels are having, scientists have developed a system called Squirrel Agent to help increase red squirrel numbers. The new system uses AI, and it has been trained to look at images and tell grey squirrels and red squirrels apart (分开). The system gets it right 97% of the time. 

The aim of the system is to help red squirrels by giving them more food, while stopping grey squirrel populations from getting even bigger. Using the information it has learned, the AI lets red squirrels get to feeders where they can eat lots of food without being with grey squirrels. To stop the grey population getting bigger, the system can offer grey squirrels other food. And there's something on the food that safely keeps grey squirrels from having too many babies, to keep their numbers in balance. And importantly, a human checks that the AI does identify grey squirrels properly.

The wind was strong. Sam Edmunds' hat blew off. His long hair waved in the air. He heard a voice behind him: "Is that a boy or a girl?" He shook his head. "Just one more month!" He said to himself. 

People often talked about his long hair behind his back. Sometimes they laughed at him. But he never felt any shame. The 14-year-old boy from London spent three years growing his hair, because he decided to raise money for a very good cause by having his head shaved (剃发).

In late May last year, strong storms passed through Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA. The floods (洪水) turned roads  brown rivers.

When storm drains (下水道) get plugged up (堵塞), rainwater builds up on the streets. It's the leading cause of weather— related deaths in the United States. A team of local middle school students made a plan for(solve) this problem.

Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. The most famous embroidery styles are Su embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan and Yue embroidery from

Shu embroidery is the oldest of the four. It dates back to the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD). People sold it to other countries through the South Silk Road.

Embroidery takes time and patience. Since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people buy handmade Shu embroidery products. There are also very few young embroiderers. So the skill is in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China's intangible cultural heritage list (非物质文化遗产目录) in 2006.

Meng Dezhi has been making Shu embroidery for over forty years. The 64-year-old woman is a national-level inheritor (传承人) of the art form. She used to work at the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory. But in 2006, the factory went____broke and Meng lost her job.

Wanting to save the art, Meng wanted to have her own place and teach Shu embroidery to others. It's hard work. Workers need to divide each silk thread (线) into more than ten or even thirty pieces. In 2016, Baidu invited

Last summer I went to a park and saw a tiny dog walking around. He was dirty and weak. When he saw the snacks in my hand, he ran up to me, shaking his tail with a look of hope. He was so hungry. But he ran away in fear immediately as soon as he saw my mom. I felt sorry for the homeless dog.

Since then, I have paid attention to homeless pets in Shanghai. There are more than 270,000 homeless pets in the city now and this number is still growing. The fast growth of homeless pets can cause many big problems, for example, they may spread diseases and attack people. 

However, I'm wondering why there are so many homeless pets. Some owners leave their pets behind in the street when they don't want to keep them any more. At the same time, the city can't provide enough animal shelters(收容所) for the abandoned(遗弃) animals.

How shall we work together to save these poor pets? Firstly, the government should pass laws to protect pets. Secondly, more money should be raised to build more animal shelters. What's more, we could help by volunteering to educate people on how to take care of pets. Lastly, we should consider getting a pet from the animal shelters instead of buying a new one.

Lily received a shiny new bicycle for her birthday present. She loved it so much that she named it Sunny. However, she was troubled because she didn't know to ride.
