We know elephants never get lost. People find some animals can easily find their ways home like elephants. How do they make it? The research shows that they are born with certain special abilities for direction. It's amazing, right?
A kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 meters and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest.
Some fishes have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we should simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

4、阅读下面的短文,从下面所给的A—E五个选项中选出正确的选项,并将其序号填入文中各小题,使短文完整、通顺、正确。将答案序号涂在答题卡上相应的位置。
To begin with, "cool" was just a word to describe the weather. In the past century, however, "cool" has become richer in meaning.
In the 1930s, being "cool" became a top word of praise in American slang (俚语). The word soon showed more meanings, including calm, wise, fashionable and more, according to the magazine Humanities.
According to Joel Dinerstein, a professor at Tulane University, today's "cool" is all about being caring. To be cool is to know and care about what is happening in the world. His students now believe that a person is cool if they care about environment or do charity work.
Another study found the key of "cool" lies in the will to stick to one's own choice in life. The study pointed out that cool people always choose their own paths whatever others think. You must make sure your behaviors are proper and are not being over done.
So, what does it really mean to be cool for teenagers? According to a latest survey done by some middle schools in Chengdu, most students believe that true coolness comes from knowing the importance of safety and responsibility. It also comes from making choices that make you have a better future. It means to live a life with passion (激情) no matter what happens.
A. But this doesn't mean you don't need to follow the social rules.B. Fast forward to today, "cool" has had a big change from the past.
C. It is now not only a word, but a style, an attitude and even a life philosophy.
D. The real "cool" ones are those who will not be beaten by failures but keep trying.
E. Back in the day, being cool meant being a bit cold toward others but in an attractive way.

5、Did you ever imagine flying over the city in an air taxi that has no pilot? Do you believe it can take you from place to place in minutes? It sounds like science fiction, right? Well, not anymore.
An electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL, 电动垂直起降) aircraft (飞行器), also known as an air taxi, completed its first inter-city flight in Guangdong on Feb 27. The eVTOL aircraft started its journey from Shenzhen to Zhuhai, completing the 55-kilometer trip in about 20 minutes. This flight is an important development of this exciting new form of transport.
Air taxis use high technology to take off and land vertically like a helicopter, which doesn't need long runways. Instead of using traditional combustion engines, air taxis use electric motors. These air taxis have propellers placed all over them to help them stay balanced. They also use lithiumion batteries to store electricity, letting them fly far and fast. With a central command center that keeps an eye on the flight, some of them can fly without a pilot.
There is no doubt that air taxis can help improve heavy traffic, with their direct point-to-point travel saving valuable time for urban people. Except this benefit, as an eco-friendly choice, air taxis produce fewer emissions than traditional cars, improving urban air quality.
However, air taxis also need special places to take off and land, which means they need eVTOL airports called "vertiports". Now researchers are trying to make full use of the existing (现有的) small airports to serve as "vertiports". And with plans to fly at low altitudes (纬度) in cities, there's still much work to be done to keep everyone safe.

D、How to build more new airports for air taxis.(5)、What's the best title of the passage?A、A new form of transport. B、The history of air taxis. C、The popularity of air taxis. D、The forms of transport. -

Skipping to victory
Zhou Qi is a 17-year-old student from Hangzhou. Zhejiang. Last September he broke the Guinness (吉尼斯) World Record for the most single skips in one minute, with a result of 374. The record had stood unbroken for ten years. Daisuke Mimura from Japan held it with 348 skips in 2013.
Interestingly, Zhou's new record is not even his personal best. "My best performance was 396 times in one minute. That was done in the 2nd Primary and Secondary School Students' Rope Skipping Championship in 2020. My coach said I had already broken the world record. It was at that time that I made up my mind to apply for the Guinness World Record," Zhou said.
However, the road to success was far from smooth. For years, Zhou practised with a special steel rope designed for competítion. It's light and strong. But because of the rope he used, his first Guinness application was considered invalid (无效). After online communication with the records management team, Zhou quickly changed to a common rope recognized (认证) by the Guinness World Records. He soon got used to it.
Whatever kind of rope Zhou used, his strict training stood him in good sporting condition. Zhou has been in the school rope skipping team for seven years. He has jumped rope for about four hours each day. He would also run around the playground to improve his physical strength.
Now a high school student, Zhou said he'll put his studies first. But he won't stop training and still hopes to beat his own record one day.

The other day, two tourists in China were banned (禁止) from visiting giant pandas all their lives. Over the past four months, a total of 19 people have been banned from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for similar reasons.
Food from tourists may make pandas sick. Giant pandas eat about 20 kilos of bamboo and bamboo shoots a day. To make sure that the pandas' diet is healthy, their food sources (来源) are watched. Even common foods like carrots can carry bacteria (细菌). Humans also carry bacteria, and they can put pandas' health at risk.

15、After the haircut
It's getting hot. You go to have your hair cut. The barber Tony cuts off part of your hair and sweeps it away, but your hair's journey is not over after the haircut.
Have you ever thought of planting your old hair after it's cut off? Some farmers do! What comes up? Not wigs (假发), but bigger and tastier crops. Hair is full of nitrogen (氮) that helps plants to grow. When cut hair is mixed into soil, the hair breaks down, slowly letting out nitrogen so it can help flowers and vegetables get big a little faster.
If you've got a wool sweater on, you're wearing a sheep's haircut. Sheep grow fine curly (弯曲的) fur called wool. All those curls make air pockets that trap heat, keeping the sheep warm. Farmers shear the sheep in summer, so the sheep don't feel too hot. And we use the hair to make warm clothes, socks, and hats. Wool can even take in rain without feeling wet. Wool also doesn't catch fire easily.
What does your hair say about you? Even many years after it has been cut, hair can tell surprising secrets. Because hair is made from bits of old cells, it has trace (微量) of chemicals (化学物质) that were in the body when the hair grew. When people are kept in the situation of dangerous chemicals, these traces remain in the hair, even long after they have disappeared from the body itself. Testing hair can help doctors know if there are dangerous chemicals in the food and water. Hair can tell another important secret—whose hair is it? This can be used to help solve crimes.
Hair does so many things for us. It keeps us warm and cool, helps farmers, shows mysteries, and provides endless styling fun. One thing is for sure, it's not just for wigs any more.
(1)、In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage?A、History. B、Fashion. C、Science. D、Health.(2)、How does hair help plants to grow?A、It provides nitrogen. B、It breaks down soil. C、It takes in rainwater. D、It lets out a smell.(3)、What does the underlined part "shear the sheep" mean?A、Give enough food to the sheep. B、Wash the sheep many times. C、Find living place for the sheep. D、Cut the wool off the sheep.(4)、What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?A、Hair helps keep warm. B、Hair testing is important. C、Hair can tell secrets. D、Hair helps solve crimes.(5)、How is the passage organized? (P: Paragraph)A、B、

16、The police have many ways of catching criminals. One way of catching them is by fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is the study of the patterns on our fingertips. We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly the same for hundreds of years. However, it wasn't until 1910 that the first criminal in the USA was convicted (被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence.
Early on the morning of September 19, 1910, Hiller's wife noticed that the light which they usually left on was off. When Hiller went to find out what was happening, he saw a stranger at the top of the stairs. The stranger had broken in and wanted to steal. Hiller and the stranger started to fight, but the stranger had a gun. He shot Hiller twice and ran away.
Hiller's wife ran to Hiller when she heard the gunshots but found him dead. So she called the police. Soon after, the police caught Thomas Jennings, not far from the Hillers' house.
The only problem was no one saw the criminal. However, the police had started using fingerprinting at that time. According to Hiller's wife, only several hours before Hiller's death, he had painted some wood near the kitchen window. Then the police checked the wood completely and found some fingerprints in the wet paint.
