Anna and Zoe were good friends. They did everything together—homework, soccer practice and even folding paper during their lunch breaks. But one  (rain) afternoon, their friendship faced a test.

While walking home, Anna found a shiny key near her house. "Look! Maybe it's  a treasure box!" she joked. However, Zoe said, "We should find  owner." They decided to ask their neighbors.

Anna and Zoe knocked on their neighbor Mrs. Lee's door first.  Mrs. Lee opened the door, her eyes were red from crying.

Sally: Yes—staying with the same teacher is good.

 They know what to expect, and this helps them learn. Every child learns in a different way. Some children get nervous at school. But if they have already known their teacher, they may feel more relaxed.  We keep the same music or sports coach for years. So why not do the same with classroom teachers? It doesn't cost extra money, and it helps both kids and teachers.

Alan: No—changing teachers can be better.

But this doesn't work for everyone.  That can make learning harder. Also, one teacher may not be great at teaching all subjects. Some kids may need a new teacher who explains things in a better way. Meeting new teachers helps kids get ready for the real world. In life, they will meet many different people. It's good to learn how to work with different kinds of teachers too.

People around the world start their day with a cup of coffee. They believe coffee helps them keep awake and gives them energy. This is because of something called caffeine in coffee. But a new study shows     ▲    !

Researchers worked with 20 students from Slovenian universities. All were healthy and in their early 20s, and drank coffee often.

Before the study, the students didn't drink any coffee for eight hours. They also slept for at least seven hours the night before. The scientists checked their health, heart rate (心率), and blood pressure (血压).

When the study began, each student got a cup of coffee. All the cups looked and tasted the same. None of them had real coffee with full caffeine. But in half of the cups, scientists added just a little bit of caffeine. The students didn't know which kind they got.

After drinking the coffee, the students waited 20 minutes. Then they took some tests. The scientists wanted to see how the coffee changed their bodies and brains.

They thought the coffee with caffeine would make a bigger change. But something surprising happened. Both groups showed the same body changes. Their hearts beat more slowly, and their blood pressure went up.

The students also did some math and listening tests. There was no big difference in the math grades. But for the listening test, all students did better after coffee. The ones who had caffeine did a little better, but the others also improved.

This shows that caffeine may help us listen and understand sounds faster. But it also shows that people may feel more awake just because they think they had caffeine. This is called the placebo effect (安慰剂效应).

Our earth has two very cold areas at its ends: the Arctic and the Antarctic (北极地区和南极地区). The Arctic is the area around the North Pole, while the Antarctic is the area around the South Pole. They have a lot in common, but they are also different in many ways.

The two places are very cold and covered with ice. Much of the ice there never melts (融化). Heavy snowstorms are common in both places.

One big difference is what is under the ice. Water is under most of the ice in the Arctic. However, land is under most of the ice in the Antarctic. Antarctica is a large continent (大陆). It has mountains, valleys and plains (山谷和平原). They are covered with ice.

The Arctic is warmer than the Antarctic. Plants grow in the Arctic in summer. The Antarctic has almost no plants because it is too cold. Only a few small plants grow there each summer.

Animals live in both places. Polar bears, for example, live in the Arctic. So do some foxes and wolves. Most animals cannot live in Antarctica because it is too cold. However, penguins can live there. Some animals, such as whales, can live in both places.

Many people live in the Arctic. There are towns and small cities in the land areas. However, the Antarctic is so cold that nobody can live there for long. Scientists who study the continent only stay there while they are working. They live in special buildings and don't spend much time outside.

Freddie woke up to find that it was snowing. The snow covered the roads, cars and houses.

After breakfast, Mum told Freddie to go outside to play. Freddie wasn't happy about it. He didn't like the cold or the snow. He wanted to stay inside and play on his computer instead.

"You can play on your computer later. It's good to get some fresh air. I'm sure you'll have a good time outside," said Mum, handing Freddie a scarf, a hat and gloves. Finally, Freddie put on the warm clothes and headed outside.

Standing outside in the cold wind was not Freddie's idea of fun. He sighed (叹气), wishing to go back inside and play on his computer. He then started packing the snow to build a snowman.

A few moments later, Freddie saw his classmate, Dion, emerge from his father's car. He was surprised to see him. Usually, they just took the bus to school together. Dion joined Freddie in building the snowman. They finished it quickly.

As they stepped back to look at their work, a snowball hit (击中) Freddie's back. He turned around and another one hit his arm. Colin was standing in front of his house on the other side of the street, smiling. He threw another snowball, hitting Dion in the leg this time.

"Hey!" Dion shouted. He quickly made a snowball and threw it at Colin. The three boys shouted and laughed as snowballs flew in all directions.

"You were right, Mum. I really enjoyed myself this morning," Freddie said when he went back home.

Hello, my name is Peter Brown. Today, I don't need to go to school. So I go to my uncle's farm with my friends.
