What will the world of the next generation look like? Many people today are confident that technology is going to help solve some of the most challenging problems we have on Earth today. But it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect.
When we dream about the future, many of us like to think that we will be able to fly to the sky in our own personal flying car. The advantages are clear. This technology would allow total freedom of movement. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. If the cars become popular, it is likely to cause a very heavy traffic. And what will happen if the cars break down?
3D printing is another new technology with exciting possibilities for the future. 3Dprinters are already used to make life-size models of car parts, and man-made body parts, such as ears. As we move into the future, 3D printing will change the way we make things and the way we treat sick people.
Finally, imagine having your own Iron Man suit. Several companies are trying to build a practical robot suit. This is an electronic suit with robot arms and legs which follows the wearer's movements. It allows you to lift heavy objects and walk long distances. However, one disadvantage at the moment is cost. Even a simple robot suit can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.
One day, we will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Although there are some problems to solve before all of this is possible, we can certainly dream of a world where technology makes life easier and safer.
A. New technology may solve old problems.
B. These are problems we must expect in the future.
C. Looking ahead, it is not difficult to imagine a future.
D. And it even might help people walk again after disease.
E. The disadvantage is that such a machine is very expensive.
F. An advantage of 3D printing is that you can make products anywhere.
G. However, some people believe there will be problems with traffic control.

Some people decide to stop eating meat and begin to accept a vegan diet because of health reasons. This way of eating avoids all animal products, including meat, fish, milk, eggs and even honey.
Making the change can be a challenge for people who often have dairy and meat in their diet, according to Dena Champion, a dietitian, an expert on diet and nutrition, from Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She added that starting a vegan diet could change your body in certain ways. It might even offer some health benefits.
Reduced body weight. Instead of high-fat proteins like bacon and beef, vegans get their protein from plant-based sources such as tofu, beans, soy milk, and so on. "This can lead to losing weight. Considering that two-thirds of Americans are overweight, this can have a positive effect on body shape and health. " says Kailey Proctor, a dietitian at St. Joseph Hospital in California.
Improved blood sugar control. Because being overweight is a major risk for developing diabetes, losing weight can lower that risk. There was one study from some experts published in the magazine Nutrients. The experts chose some overweight people with no history of diabetes to switch to a vegan diet. Then they followed them for 16 weeks. Improvements and better effects are seen in those people in controlling blood sugar levels.
Reduced cancer risk. There's also the chance to reduce your risk of developing cancer. "Vegan diets, when planned correctly, are also very high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These plant-based foods have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, " says Proctor. We should always focus on consuming whole, fresh foods as much as possible. It's important to make sure you' re getting enough nutrients for your health.

19、 Wednesday 植物学比想象的重要
A few years ago, I did research on moss to make a living. Once I accidentallymentioned my job to my barber, he laughed at me. Then every time I got my hair cut, he couldn't get past it. My example certainly isn't a one-off situation. Researchers across all fields of science have had similar experiences. But I feel plant scientists are forced to go through such situations especially regularly.
Many people ask me why I am not doing more"useful" studies— on things like cancer or dementia. My answer to their questions is simple. Plant science can help feed the world. Millions of people worldwide die of hunger every year. It's not that we aren't producing enough food; it's just that we are wasting a lot of food. Plant science can help to reduce this waste. One example is apples that brown slower. They are less likely to be thrown away. Plants can also help us protect our environment. They are important in our fight against climate change. Moreover, discoveries in plant science have also paved the way for studies in many other areas of science. In short, plant science isn't useless at all.
At an event at a local secondary school, I was surprised to learn that none of the teenagers aged from 14 to 15 could recognize the rice plant. This perhaps shows the level of interest in plants among today's young people. It's very worrying. If students aren't interested in plants, they are unlikely to study them in the future. They will never know how important plant science is.
Schools could and should do more to change their ideas. The Rocket Science campaign was a great example. It saw six hundred thousand children become space biologists. The pupils sowed and grew seeds that later spent six months on the International Space Station. Such events are able to drum up students' interest in plant science. Unfortunately, there are too few of them.
Plant science is much more useful than many people think. I hope that more people, especially young students, will take a second look at it.
