Young corn leaves can" smell" danger, but they lose this ability as they grow older, according to a new research by Lei Wang and his team at the University of Bern.

Plants can sense danger through smells, even though they don't have noses. They can smell insect saliva (唾液). For example, when an insect eats corn leaves, the plant can smell the insect's saliva and prepare to protect itself. Scientists have known this for a long time, but they didn't know which parts of plants sense danger or how they do it.

Wang's team first studied adult corn leaves but found they didn't produce many defense chemicals(防御化学物质) when in danger. So they had to turn over a new leaf. They studied young leaves instead, because they were better at" smelling" danger.In lab tests, young leaves produces more defense chemicals than adult leaves. However, adult leaves could still notice other dangers, like insects eating them.

The researchers think young leaves are better at sensing danger because they are weaker and are at the top of the plant. From there, they can smell things from far away. This helps the plant get an early warning.

Wang hopes this research will help develop smarter crops that can fight insects, cutting down the need for harmful pesticides(杀虫剂). By doing this research, he wants to help solve big farming problems.

The cartoon film Inside Out 2 has become a big success,reaching over $1 billion worldwide. This fun next part of the story continues to follow Riley, who is now a teenager. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the film explores teenage feelings in a warm and friendly way, just like the first movie from 2015.

The success of Inside Out 2 comes from its deep connection to the first movie, which touched viewers of all ages. Building on old feeling characters like Joy and Sadness, the next part adds new ones such as Anxiety(焦焦) and Embarrassment(尬尬).

Christie Rizzo, a psychology(心 理学) teacher, says that people who help kids with their mind health use the movie to help children understand their feelings. She says it also helps families and school workers talk about feelings more easily. "It's much easier when they can see it happen in the movie," Rizzo says.

Rizzo also says that even if kids don't think the movie is educational, it still teaches important lessons about feelings through its story. The way the movie mixes fun with learning about feelings has made it a favorite among both children and adults.

Last summer,I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Rwanda(卢旺达)with my parents. They work for a charity(慈善机构). I was interested in studying medicine in the future, so I decided to help in a hospital there for a month. I wanted to see if being a doctor was right for me.

That month changed my life. Rwanda was very different from the UK. People there had difficult lives, but they were always kind and helped each other. They smiled a lot and shared food. I learned that we in the UK sometimes forgot how lucky we were.

Domingo Morales has many jobs. Environmentalist is one. A farmer in the city is another. He has started a group. It's called Compost(堆肥)Power. 

"I'm a compost expert," Morales said, "I've been composting for the past seven years." Morales runs six composting sites in New York City, That's his hometown. "In New York City one-third of our waste is actually food waste," he says. That garbage is put into landfills (垃圾填埋场).But it could be composted.

"Composting is taking our food waste and turning it into food for the soil," Morales explains. Plants use nutrients to grow, They take these nutrients from the soil. Banana peels and apple cores can be composted. So can many other unnecessary foods. But never add meat,   dairy, cheese, fats or oils, pet waste, or chemically treated wood, These items either cause unpleasant smells or could contain harmful diseases or chemicals.

The food cycle has to do with how food is produced, sold, and eaten. When food ends up in landfills, energy and nutrients are wasted. But with composting, the food cycle can be more sustainable(可持续的). Composting breaks down uneaten food. The nutrients in the compost help the soil. The soil is used to grow new fruits and vegetables. For Morales, composting is "a way to complete the cycle."

When people think of New York City, they might think of tall buildings and busy streets. But there are also rooftop farms and community gardens. And there are Morales's composting sites. His task is to start even more of them. "We're able to create a nice ecosystem right here," he says. "Even on top of concrete, we can create soil."
