Do you love math? Recently, our school held  three﹣day math festival. Fun activities helped students fall in love with math!

On the  （one） day, students performed （表演） plays and we watched some of them. My favorite play is about Chinese mathematician Hua Luogeng. Three students played Hua at three different （age）. They let us  （know） about his amazing life and his passion （热情） for math.

Friendship is one of the greatest pleasures that people can enjoy. A true friend does indeed find pleasure in our joy and share sorrow in our grief. In time of trial, he or she is always at our side to give us his or her help and comfort. 

We must choose someone who has a good character, whose activities are good and who shows kindness of heart. 

If you tell a friend your secrets, he or she won't tell anyone else. Friends share each other's joys and sorrows. They help each other when they are in trouble and cheer each other up when they are sad. In conclusion, when you have made a good friend, don't forget him or her. 

Middle school is a good time to try new things. Why not join a school club in your free time? 

How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time. 

About 5, 500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow （影子） showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3, 500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows （流动） from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3, 400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time. 

In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, springs （发条） were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz （石英） clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It's also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second. 

There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work. 

This year, about one hundred teenagers from all over China will spend one year in American homes. They will attend schools and meet teenagers in the U. S. , and have a new understanding of America. At the same time, about one hundred American teenagers will come to China to learn Chinese and get a new understanding of China. 

A 15﹣year﹣old exchange student, Fred, spent last year in China with Li Hua's family. In turn, Li Hua spent a year in Fred's home in America. 

Fred knew little Chinese when he arrived, but after two months' study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students stood up respectfully（尊敬地） when the teacher entered the classroom. They took fourteen subjects instead of six in the United States. There were almost no outside activities. 

Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the whole family rather than individuals（个人）. 

"Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. But in China, you walk home and you have to finish your homework first. "

At the same time, in America, Li Hua, a friendly Chinese boy, was also forming his idea. "I suppose I should criticize（批评） American schools, " he says. "It is much too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In China we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. "

My best friend, Connie, is two years older than me. We spend a lot of time together.
