①When I was a boy, my mom used to say I would read the back of a medicine bottle if I didn't have a book in my hand. It was true, and even now that reading habit has been with me. I always have at least one book being read, and sometimes I might have two or three. And I'm talking about real books, books made out of paper, books that you can hold in your hands, to read, at the table, on the subway or my favorite place to read— in the bath. 

②But the number of people reading books is dropping. A recent survey tells us that Chinese people only read 4. 77 printed books a year on average and in the US, 25 percent of the population say they didn't read a book last year! So what's stopping people from reading?

③The answer, of course, is the huge influence that technology has had on our life. Why do you read a book when you can watch a movie or TV play on your smartphones or tablet computers? For younger people, books may not be as exciting as online games. There are no shortcuts to reading a book. You have to turn page after page. 

④But you can still get lost in a book. We all have this thing called imagination. It's much more powerful than any computer; in fact, all online games are about the creators' imagination. 

⑤So we need to read— if we do not read, it will be hard for us to improve our ability to think wisely, to have an imagination. Reading is a process in which we need to compare and connect other things we have read and seen in the past. If you do not read, this will influence not only your study but also your social life in the future. 

⑥So why not follow me from now on? Run a hot bath, or find a comfortable chair and read a good book for a few hours— there are quite a few, for free, in your local library.

④Healthy experts advise people to eat a mix of healthy foods, with about half of your everyday calories coming from carbs（碳水化合物）. They also encourage people to eat until 70% full for long-term weight control. Keeping a regular sleep habit is also important because staying up late can lead to unhealthy eating habits and weight gain.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature went to the South Korean writer Han Kang.  October 10th, the 53-year-old writer was awarded the prize for her"poetic prose". She is the (one) South Korean writer to win the prize.

The festival attracts the attention of people from all over the world. More people are increasingly interested in this festival. However, this also brings some worries. Efforts will be made to reduce the bad influence on the environment while keeping the traditional cultural customs.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy. 

Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic. 

Family size might cause people to be shy as well: Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied (欺侮) by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families. 

You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist said the Japanese and Israeli s had different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame (责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israeli s often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israeli s worry less about failure and are less shy. 

For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practising conversation. And don't forget— if you are shy, you are not the only one. 

It was 10 p. m. on a Wednesday night. Fourteen-year-old Li Gong sat at his desk and stared at a blank sheet of paper. Li had to write a 600-word book report and the deadline was the next day. The problem? He hadn't read the book. Li opened an AI app on his computer and entered the words"Book report, 600 words, The Old Man and the Sea. "In less than a minute, the boy had his book report.

An AI app depends on a collection of information that someone has uploaded onto a computer system. A specially trained algorithm (算法) processes the information to produce the type of writing someone might need. It's useful for writing business emails, legal documents and even news reports, but it's not useful for expressing your personal ideas and thoughts. 

Writing is the most difficult of all the language skills. You need to be good at grammar and have a good vocabulary. Writing also requires you to think clearly. For example, Li Gong was supposed to read Earnest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and find out what it was about. 

It's a sad story, but what does it all mean? If Li had read the book and written the book report, he would have learned a lot and had the satisfaction of expressing his own ideas about the story. That's something AI cannot do. 

The animated film Ne Zha 2, released on January 29, 2025, has become a huge success in the film industry. Directed by the famous director Jiaozi (Yang Yu), it continues the exciting story of Ne Zha（哪吒）and Ao Bing（敖丙）from the first movie.

Visually, the movie is a feast for the eyes. It begins with thrilling scenes of flowing lava like wild rivers and terrifying sea monsters jumping out of the water, making viewers feel as if they are part of the action. Beyond the action, Ne Zha 2teaches important life lessons. It encourages people to stay brave when facing difficulties, fight for what is right, and value friendship. These themes resonate with both young and adult audiences. The film has broken box office records, earning an astonishing amount in its first week. Many people praise its perfect mix of cultural elements, exciting storytelling, and positive messages.

Mi was born in Sichuan Province. He is a street artist. He (make) clay figurines (泥塑) in the past few years. 

In 2003, Mi  (lose) his hands in an accident. But he didn't lose hope for life and he learned to eat and get (dress) on his own. He had to take care his family. So he thought that he must find a way to make money by  (him). 

One day Mi saw old man making clay figurines on the street. Mi was interested in it and decided to learn from him. "The old man didn't want to teach me, but I didn't give up. Finally, he agreed (teach) me how to make clay figurines," Mi said. Learning to make clay figurines was difficult. But he(stick) to it and never thought of giving up. 

Now Mi can make a living by making clay figurines. Whenever he sits on the ground to make clay figurines, many people will come to watch him  (excited). 

Prices are not set for his figurines. People can pay as they like. In this way, each figurine is sold for about 20 yuan. Mi is full of hope for a better future he knows his hard work is worth it.
