My Day as a "Young Vet"

Last Saturday, I took part in a "Young Vet" program at the city pet hospital. It was a one-day experience, but it made me more sure about my dream of being a vet.

When I arrived at 8:30 a.m., Dr. Li, a vet with 10 years of experience, welcomed me. She gave me a white coat and said, "Today, you'll be my helper—remember to be gentle with the animals." My first task was to feed the sick cats. Some of them were scared and hid in the corners. Dr. Li taught me to speak softly and hold food in my palm. Slowly, a small orange cat came to eat—it made me feel warm.

Next, we checked a dog named Doudou. It had a fever and didn't eat for two days. Dr. Li let me take its temperature (it was 39.5℃, higher than normal). Then she showed me how to listen to its heart with a stethoscope. "Doudou has a cold," she said. "We need to give it medicine twice a day." I helped her mix the medicine with food—Doudou ate it all!

In the afternoon, we did a "pet health class" for kids. I explained how to take care of dogs: "Feed them at fixed times, take them for walks every day, and take them to the vet when they're sick." The kids asked many questions, like "Why do cats like to sleep in boxes?" I answered with what I learned from Dr. Li.

At the end of the day, Dr. Li said, "You're patient and careful—you'll be a good vet." This experience taught me that being a vet is not just about treating animals—it's about caring for them. I'll study biology hard and volunteer more at pet hospitals to make my dream come true.
