Fiona was a popular girl at school. She was smart and fun. From an early age, she tried to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited (邀请) all her classmates to her birthday party. She gave gifts to everybody. She was very busy because she had so many friends to spend every day with. She felt very lucky. But everything changed (改变)on National Friendship Day. On that day, at school, everyone had to give three gifts to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed choosing three from all her friends. However, after giving three gifts, Fiona didn't get one! Even Lily, a girl who always played with her every day, didn't give her a gift.

When she got home that night, Fiona told her mother what had happened. Her mother touched her head tenderly (温柔地) and said, "You can't buy friends with a smile or a few good words. For most of your classmates, you're only a playmate (玩伴). If you really want true friends, you should really care about your friends."

That night, in bed, Fiona thought about her mother's words. Then she thought that her mother always helped her and stayed with her at anytime. Until that moment, Fiona knew the meaning (意思) of a true friend.

Dylan was swimming. What pushed Dylan to swim  (far)than he had ever swum before?

Dylan's arms and legs hurt. With each breath, he  (wonder) if he could get to the finish line. But as he touched the wall at the end of the pool, he shortly turned for another lap (圈). "I can do one more," Dylan told  (he), " for Charley."

For a month, Dylan and his friends had asked their family  (member) and others for help. Most people gave a dollar or two for every lap. Dylan's grandmother offered to give $10 for each lap Dylan swam!

Finally, Dylan finished the  (ten) lap. He knew he was too tired to keep going. Dylan got out of the pool and sat on the floor, resting  he could stand.

Dylan stood and walked  (slow) to where Charley was and hugged him.

"My parents and I are looking  a good chance to give a ‘thank you' to everyone later," Charley said, "but you deserve one now. Thanks."

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendships back. That is why some friendships don't last very long.  You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. 

Generosity means sharing, and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead, you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.  They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later, everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.  So to be a friend, you  must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.

 But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must be honest, be generous and be understanding.

Every day I passed by a homeless old man on the street. He usually sat near where I went to school. Whenever I passed by, he said "hello" cheerfully, and I always said it back. I gave him some change I had.

The old man always wore an old watch. It was not an expensive one by any means, but it worked. One day I found he wasn't wearing it any more. I asked him why and he looked down and told me that the battery (电池) died so he threw it away. I knew he couldn't buy a new battery and he certainly couldn't pay for a new watch.

He stayed on my mind all day, and I knew what I had to do. I went out to a shop and bought him a watch. It was not an expensive one, but was very like the one he had.When I saw him the next day, he was smiling and as cheerful as ever. When I bent down to put some change in his cup, I also dropped in the watch. I didn't say anything about it. I just smiled at him and kept on walking. He didn't even notice it until I had walked on. I looked back and watched as he pulled the watch from the cup. He put the watch on with a big smile on his face and I walked happily on my way.
