How I Have Changed

How time flies! I have changed a lot since I became a ninth grader this term. 

Jeff Gaye used to be quiet and wasn't popular at the primary school. He took up swimming to deal with his quietness. Now he is 14 years old and a well-known swimmer. Jeff's father is an engineer. At the same time, he is also his son's manager. He says, "I don't make Jeff do anything he doesn't want to do. As he is suffering from much more stress than other kids. So I let him choose which competition swim in. 

Jeff is very busy every day because reporters want to write about him and he gets tons of attention from fans. In fact, Jeff doesn't like this kind of life. Jeff says, "When I'm at school, I just want to be like my classmates. I hardly stay at home. So staying with my family is really important for me. " He often has to travel for international races and has little free time. He says, "I go to the pool every day and swim there for at least six hours. When I'm in the pool, I love every minute. "

At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Ma Long was the flag bearer (持旗手) of the China Sports Delegation (代表团). Ma Long is  (wide) regarded as one of the greatest table tennis players. His  (succeed) has encouraged lots of players. 

Ma has enjoyed playing table tennis since he was a child. At the age of 5, Ma started playing table tennis. He planted a seed (种子) in his heart from  early age. He hoped that one day, he could represent China  (fight) and win the championship. 

Since then, he has trained hard and joined in all kinds of competitions. Finally, at the age of 15, he  (choose) as a member of the national team. After that, his  (day) life was full of training and competitions. 

Ma won his  (one) world championship at the age of 18, but he knew it was not enough. He wanted to win more championships. He met many difficulties in the next few years, so he was under great pressure.  he failed many times, he kept on training day after day. He didn't want to give up. And the coach told him that the only one who can beat him is  (he). Finally, Ma completed his "grand slam (大满贯)" in table tennis when he was 28. 

Ma once said, "It was one of the happiest moments of my life when I saw the five star red flag being raised on the international field because  me. I finally realized my dream of winning the honor for my motherland—the dream since my childhood. "

Did you watch the Chengdu FISU World University Games (成都大运会) in 2023? Many student-athletes saw  sporing dreams come true at the Games. A  of young Chinese athletes did very well at the Games, including Xia Yuyu. 

Xia Yuyu is a 25-year-old student fom Tsinchua University. She has become a big winner at the FISU World University Games  Chengdu. She is the most tired and the  athlete at the Games. She took part in four competitions in six days. She won a gold medal in the  10,000 meters, a silver medal in the women's 5,000 meters and a bronze (铜) medal in the women's team half marathon (马拉松). Many people were  by her wonderful performance. 

Before the Games, she ran for 30 kilometers during training each day.  she knew how hard it was to win the gold medal at the Games, she  her mind not to give up. 

"I  want to thank my university, which helped me solve many problems during preparations for the Games in Chengdu. It's not been easy for my  who has had to attend to all the details of my training and daily life," Xia said.

On the night of Aug 11, 2024, the Paris Olympics closed with an excellent ceremony at France's national stadium (体育场). The Paris Olympics brought people fantastic competitions. 

Paris saw a lot of "dream-come-true" moments. China's Olympic team gave its best performance during the competition, winning 40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze medals.  They swept all the gold medals in their sports. In swimming, Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle broke his own world record to win the men's 100-meter freestyle in 46. 40 seconds. Zheng Qinwen from China's Olympic team has also made an important breakthrough (突破).  And this cheered all the Chinese. 

 After winning silver in badminton women's singles, China's He Bingjiao carried a Team Spain Olympic pin with her onto the podium (领奖台), showing respect for her opponent (对手) who give up the competition because of a knee injury. This act of sportsmanship (体育精神) touched millions. 

As one of the oldest players in Paris, Ni Xialian won cheers from the crowd after she finished her competition with Chinese player Sun Yingsha. Ni grew up in China before she moved to Luxembourg.  She smiled when Sun hit a good shot and even helped Sun and her partner win during the training. 

All athletes participating in the Paris Olympics, whether they won medals or not, will certainly be remembered. 
 

Nadia Comaneci, a famous gymnast, was born in Romania in 1961. 

When she was doing cartwheels (侧手翻) on the playground at the age of 7, a PE teacher saw her. He told her family that she was very good and advised Nadia to train in the capital of Romania. Although it was a long way from her home, Nadia went because she loved gymnastics. 

After that, she trained hard and took part in lots of competitions. In 1975, she was named as one of the Athletes of the 20th Century. 

In 1976, Nadia went to the Olympics in Canada. She was so fantastic in the competition that everyone waited for the score, a high score. But the scoreboard showed 1. 00!

Everyone was surprised. There wasn't a sound for a moment. Then a voice came, "Ladies and gentlemen, Nadia Comaneci . . . 10!"

The audience (观众) cheered very loudly. So what's the matter with the scoreboard? Well, when the scoreboard was built, no one thought a score of 

10. 00 was possible.  The decimal point was in the wrong place! In fact, the scoreboard only had three digits to show scores, such as 9. 50 or 9. 85 at that time. 

In the 1976 Summer Olympics, Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10, which was thought impossible before. From then on, she was looked as a hero.
