"You are what you eat. " Nutrition experts often use this saying to improve better eating habits. 

To many people, hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza are their favorites. It's true that many Americans do eat those "junk food". But others choose more healthy eating habits. Some even go "all natural". They refuse to eat any food prepared with chemicals or additives(添加物). 

What we put in our mouths does become a part of us. To have a healthy diet, you may need to make some changes. Changing your eating habits a little bit at a time may be easier and it can lead to better health. Here are some ways for you:

Keep more fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products（乳制品）and whole-grain foods at home and at work. 

Try to eat a family meal every day at the dining table. This will help you focus on eating healthy meals and let you control what you eat. 

Pack a healthy lunch and snacks for work. Put your snacks on a plate instead of eating from the package. This helps you control how much you eat. 

Don't skip or miss meals, and be sure to list your snacks. If you don't feel hungry, you may end up choosing an unhealthy snack. If you often feel too hungry, it can cause you to focus a lot on food. Eat your meals with others when you can. That can make you feel relaxed and enjoy your meals, and don't eat too fast. Try to make healthy eating a pleasure, not a chore. 

A daily walk, even if it's just a 15-minute walk to the shop, can help to keep you active. If you walk with friends, it can improve your social life, too. Regular walks can help to protect your body from illness and make a big difference to your health. How can walks improve your health?

Weight loss

As we get older, we are more likely to put on weight. The only way to lose weight is to use more energy that we take in, and a daily walk can help to burn off some of those calories (卡路里). 

Bone health

Walking can help to strengthen bones, help to prevent the coming of osteoporosis（骨质疏松症）, which makes bones brittle and more likely to break. 

Cancer

According to Cancer Research UK, cancer causes a quarter of all deaths in the UK. Dr Modgil says, "Certain studies show that walking seems to reduce the risk of cancer more than running or playing tennis. 

Mental(精神的) health

A survey carried out by the charity Mind said that 83% of the people with mental health problems found that physical activity helped to lift their mood. Walking can help you to stay active. It means that you are less likely to feel lonely while walking. 

For Pineda, it was a long way to succeed. 

His story began in El Salvador, where he was born with something wrong with his 1 . He had great difficulty (困难) in speaking. At age 2, his family's house burned down. Pineda was hurt 2 , and his legs needed to be cut. His mother died when he was 8, and he 3 years on the streets before he was taken in by an orphanage(孤儿院). 

Finally, at the orphanage, Pineda began to receive support and encouragement. He taught himself to play the guitar. He began his 4 with other musicians. Then the group went to Chicago, where Pineda, then 18, 5 the attention of many people, who wondered what they could do to help him. 

A hospital offered him free medical care. A rich man agreed to 6 for Pineda's tickets to and from El Salvador. 

When he was in the hospital, Pineda began 7 music, and wondered if he might be able to record his own album(音乐专辑). Soon with the help of a musician, "The Sound of Gratitude(感激)" was born. On October 15th, Pineda went to a Chicago club to 8 his new songs to strangers, and to the friends who had helped him come so far. 

It was 9 that Pineda had come into such good luck, after having so many years of hardship(艰难). "We have a 10 in El Salvador, ‘Suffer(受难) first, then enjoy. I guess that's what's happening," he said. 

The Laba Festival falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. In the beginning, it was a time for people to honour their ancestors and pray for a good harvest and good luck for the whole family. Many years later, it became an event of eating Laba porridge. 

The custom of eating Laba porridge first started in the Song Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. Now it has a history of more than a thousand years. When farmers get a good harvest after their hard work, they express gratitude to their ancestors and to heaven and earth. And they celebrate their harvest by making Laba porridge. 

People mainly use different kinds of rice, beans and dried nuts to make Laba porridge. Then they add sugar and dried fruits to make it more delicious. After hours of boiling, the porridge is offered as a sacrifice to ancestors and served to friends before noon. 

Family members eat Laba porridge together. Some kind people also hand out the porridge to the poor. 

After more than a thousand years, Laba porridge has become a very healthy food, especially popular in winter. People of all ages love it. 

It is Jesse's birthday today. He  (have) fun celebrating it with his family. Look! He is holding  big box wrapped (包裹) in pretty red and gold paper. It also has a big gold bow (蝴蝶结) on the top. 

Jesse removes the gold bow very  (careful). Then, he removes the red and gold paper. Under the paper is the box. Mom and Dad say, "Open it!" 

Jesse opens the box and takes  a big red truck(卡车)! It has bells and a ladder(梯子). It is a fire truck! 

Jesse  (climb) into the box. It is a ship! Jesse pulls the red and gold paper around his shoulders. It is a prince's (王子的) cape! Jesse then puts the beautiful gold bow on Mom's head. She is  a princess(公主) now! 

Dad smiles, "Do you like  (they)?" 

Jesse laughs and says, "I love all of my  (present): the truck, the ship, the prince's cape and the bow for Mom! This is the  (good) birthday ever!"

During the Spring Festival, Chinese families come together for a big dinner. And dumplings, also known as jiaozi, usually play an important role in this  festival. 

In the north, dumplings show family reunion  great wealth. In the south, people believe egg dumplings can  good luck for a successful year ahead. 

However, even though dumplings are well liked in China and around the world,  beginnings are not clear. Archaeologists (考古学家) in east China's Shandong Province said that the  record of dumplings goes back about 2,500 years in Shandong Province. 

In the Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms periods, chef figurines (厨师小雕像) in Sichuan and Chongqing areas  the love for dumplings. People found dumplings in northwest China's Xinjiang that were over a thousand years old. The dumplings  very similar in size and shape to the ones today. 

Looking back on the 2,500-year history of dumplings  China, it is easy to make dumplings and there are different fillings (馅) to meet different taste . The great taste and special meanings help dumplings keep popular. 

"Dumplings are a part of  culture and they show Chinese people's love for life and their hope for the future," said Hu Xinli, one archaeologist. 

Chinese Festivals

Traditional festivals show the most important part of a nation's culture. 

^①The Spring Festival, commonly known as Chinese New Year, falls on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar.  It has a long history that can date back to the Yin and Shang dynasties. 

The Lantern Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar.  Traditionally, people would light (点燃) thousands of colored lanterns to celebrate the festival. 

Tomb Sweeping Day is the day for visiting the graves (坟墓) of the dead families and for offering sacrifices (祭品). 

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by all Chinese people, north and south, east and west, together with different stories. People make and eat zongzi. 

The Qixi Festival, also known as the Daughter's Festival, is the most romantic Chinese festival. It is a yearly celebration of the meeting of Niulang and Zhinyu in the old Chinese story. ^②It is said that people can see them reunite in the Milky Way at night. 

 It is a time for family reunion. They appreciate the full moon and enjoy mooncakes together. If the family can't be together they can look at the moon in the sky, and feel together with their family. 

The Spring Festival was Li Ming's favorite holiday. Every year in the past, his whole family came to visit. They made dumplings together, exchanged red envelopes, gathered around the TV to watch the Spring Festival Gala, and told stories. 

But this year, a heavy snowstorm hit just before the festival. The roads were blocked and nobody could come. "The Spring Festival is ruined (毁坏)," Li Ming sighed, feeling down. 

Li Ming and his family went outside to clear the snow. They met some of their neighbors who were upset, too. 

"I was planning to celebrate with my daughter in the city," said Grandma Liu, shaking her head. "I made glutinous rice cakes (年糕), but I'm all alone. "

"My son was coming home," Mr. Chen said. "I prepared fish, but now it seems wasted. "

"I don't have much of a celebration going on, either," said Miss Zhao. "My parents were going to bring the lion dance props (道具). All I have are some lanterns. "

Suddenly, Li Ming got an idea. After discussing with his parents, he shouted, "We have dumplings! Let's celebrate the New Year right here together!" Li Ming warmly invited. 

The neighbors gladly accepted. They helped set the table and brought their own dishes. Everyone ate delicious food, chatted, and the children played and laughed nearby, filling the air with joy. 

As the clock struck midnight, fireworks lit up the sky. Li Ming felt thankful for his family, the delicious food, and most importantly, his kind neighbors.

③As the oldest and the most important festival in China, the Spring Festival is always a time for families to get together. There are many traditions about it in China, such as writing the character "Fu", hanging couplets, making dumplings and watching dragon dance and lion dance performances. People, especially young children, also like to set off fireworks. 

④Another important tradition about the festival is that people always visit their relatives and friends to say "Happy New Year". And they usually bring small gifts and give "Hongbao" (lucky money) to young kids. These years, saying "Happy New Year" to each other on the phone or online is getting more and more popular. 

⑤2025 is the year of the Snake. We are sure that more and more foreigners will celebrate the Spring Festival and have fun together with Chinese people. 

In 2025, Guangdong Yingge Dance made a splash in Europe. On February 2nd, the Ximen Yingge Team from Shantou, Guangdong gave an amazing performance on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Their energetic dance moves charmed the audience, bringing the festive spirit of the Chinese New Year to the Arc de Triomphe. This was the last stop of their European tour during the Year of the Snake. Before that, they had already wowed the crowds in Hanau and Frankfurt in Germany, and Lyon in France. 

What's more remarkable is that in the summer of 2024, the first European Yingge team was formed in Paris. Intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) experts said that as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Guangdong Yingge Dance's performances in Germany and France during the Chinese New Year were a great chance for the Spring Festival culture to go global. It helps boost national confidence, promotes the cultural industry, strengthens international friendships, and shows the charm of traditional Chinese culture, enhancing China's global influence. 

The French Yingge Team was founded by the Amicale des Teochew en France. They had held small-scale (规模) shows in 2024 and early this year. Before the Ximen Yingge team's Paris performance, the two sides had lots of communication last summer. During the performance on the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, the local French Yingge Team members watched and learned, and also provided important logistical support. 

Du Laishun, the Youth Group Director and Vice President of the French Chaozhou Association, is the founder and head coach of the French Yingge Team. Having trained in Chinese martial arts for eight years, he gathered a diverse group. The team includes Chaozhou overseas Chinese, non-Chaozhou Chinese youth, and international friends of different races and nationalities, with members aged from 11 to over 40, both male and female. Du Laishun is proud that the Yingge culture has brought everyone together.
