HIGH—FLYING HELPERS

Drones, created as tools of war at first, are now performing important tasks to help people around the world. 

Sending medical help to hard—to—reach places has been a problem for years. In Rwanda, some small hospitals don't have enough medicine. As a result, many people die. A local company is trying to use drones to solve this problem. Drones can quickly provide healthcare service to the hospitals around Rwanda, and more people receive life—saving medicine. Drones also help after natural disasters. In 2015, a heavy storm hit Vanuatu, leaving many people homeless. Drones took pictures for the rescue (救援)teams. This helped the teams judge the situation quickly and offer help to the areas that were hardest hit. 

Drones are also helping environmental organizations. Every year, poachers (偷猎者)kill many endangered animals. To stop them, the WWF uses drones. "They help us see things that we can't, " says Colby, who works for the WWF. Drones can easily identify (识别) poachers in the dark. As well as finding poachers, these tools can be used to follow and protect animals. Scientists at a university plan to use them for a project: recording wildlife and identifying animal groups. The project leader believes drones will become widely used. "I think we will have plenty of drones flying over forests, " he predicts. 

A tool made for war is now being used to save lives. "Drones can be good for both humans and animals. There's nothing that can take the place of a good scientist. But now, thanks to drones, scientists are able to finish projects they've never imagined before, " says Kike, a man who cares about the environment. 

About ten years ago, I went on a trip to Luxor to see the Valley of the Kings, one of the most important tourist sites (景点)in Egypt. I stayed in the town on one side of the Nile River, the Valley of the Kings is on the other side. People usually take a guided tour to the site, but I wanted to go alone. 

First, the good things. Adawy, a very nice man near my hotel, lent a donkey (驴) to me. He also gave me directions to the site. I rode slowly to the river and I felt really good in the morning air. I often stopped to take photos—the view was beautiful. 

The old walls and tall mountains looked wonderful. I rode past quiet fields and stone buildings. The clean air made me feel great. Everything felt new and exciting. I knew I was visiting a special place all by myself. This trip gave me a happy feeling I would always remember. 

I had some problems, though. I made two mistakes. First, it was a very hot day and I only brought one small bottle of water with me—I drank it up quickly in the morning, and I was thirsty all day. The second problem was the sun because I didn't have a hat. I got terrible sunburn, and felt really hot and tired. After a few hours, I reached the site and took lots of photos. The site was astounding and made me feel great pleasure. 

In the end, I enjoyed the experience. True, I didn't feel very well, but now I have some beautiful photos and memories. I'd love to do it again, but not on a donkey!

Mr. Li is a university teacher. He has helped bring back the sound of the ruan, an ancient Chinese musical instrument. 

One day he saw a beautiful painting—three people playing the ruan in a bamboo forest. The  painting was so vivid(逼真的)that he could the beautiful sound of the ruan. Then he had a brave : to create an ancient ruan himself. 

Li had to do research online the ancient ruan could only be seen in museums. He learnt that finding the right  of the ancient ruan was the most difficult. An ancient ruan sounded more like the pipa, while a modern  sounded more like the guitar. It took him six to perfect that sound. A year later, he made his first ancient ruan. 

Li shared his story online, but he never expected to so much attention. He became even more after a musician played his ruan on a CCTV program in 2022. 

Li did a  job in bringing our ancient culture back. He wants more people the beautiful Chinese sound. 

14-year-old Jimmy bought an old, broken bike at a yard sale. He took it home and fixed it up. The next week, he bought another used bike and1 it, too. Instead of keeping them for himself, he decided to 2 them to a nearby children's home, where twenty—one kids lived. 

On a July morning, Jimmy arrived at the children's 3 . "These two bikes are for you, " said Jimmy. Then two boys got on the bikes4 . They laughed and cheered as they rode. Their happiness made Jimmy feel 5 . But when he saw the other kids waiting for their turn to 6 , he thought "I am going to make a bike for each child for the New Year. "

However, he faced a7 . He couldn't find enough old bikes to make good ones. Even if he could, how would he ever 8 the old bikes? That was hundreds of dollars. By August, he had 9 made another three bikes and this made him worried. 

Luckily, a neighbor wrote a letter describing Jimmy's 10 to the local newspaper. Soon 11 arrived. People called to give him old bikes, and truck drivers left bikes by his door. 

On New Year's Day, Jimmy sent the 12 of the twenty—one bikes to the children's home. Once again, they rushed out to ride. Their happiness inspired Jimmy again, 13 he decided to keep on building. 

Over four years, Jimmy has made 100 bikes and given them all away. When reporters asked him, "14 do you do it?" Jimmy replied, "True, it's nice of me to make the bikes. However, helping others makes 15 happy. So partly, I do it for myself. "

Give new life to old things

Sometimes, students may have back or neck pain after class. Their pain might be a result of chairs too low for their height. When they sit uncomfortably for too long, they may get tired during classes. And this makes it difficult for them to take an active part in learning activities.

One way to solve this problem is to adjust (调节) the height of their chairs. Adjustable chairs are designed to help students sit straight with their feet flat (平放的) on the floor and their knees at a 90-degree angle (角). Each student can choose their own chair height to fit their body and desk height. Proper chair height can help students reduce pain on the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Students spend hours sitting on their chairs every day. The chair becomes a silent partner in their development. The right chair allows students to focus better. But some students prefer to sit at a lower height than normal. This is not good for their health as well as their study. They need to know that a balanced sitting position can make a big difference.

Planning a Chinese menu is an art. There are no fixed rules. It is important  (create) a balance of ingredients (材料) and cooking methods. This can make your guests feel happy and  (satisfy). Let's take Jiangnan meals as  example.

Jiangnan meals usually begin  cold dishes, such as smoked fish, saltwater duck, cucumber salad, and so on. Most of them are prepared in advance (提前),  guests can start eating at any time. Hot dishes are served as soon as they  (cook). The main dishes may include Dongpo pork, squirrel fish in sweet-and-sour sauce (song shu gui yu) and fresh green  (vegetable). The number of hot dishes  (be) normally the number of guests plus one. Soup and rice are offered at the end of the meal, followed by fruits. Fruits are always cut and placed  (beautiful) on a serving plate.

It's also worth  (keep) in mind that Jiangnan dishes can be put together on a menu with dishes from other places. For example, a mixture of Jiangnan and Sichuan dishes is very popular in Suzhou, especially among young people.

What makes a building "ugly"? Everyone has their own opinion, so it's hard to say. There are some buildings that seem to appear often on lists of the  "ugliest" buildings. Here are three of them.

The Ryugyong Hotel

It is in Pyongyang. The hotel looks like a huge rocket. Work on the building started in 1987, but stopped in 1992 when money . The hotel was finally finished in 2011.

The Prague TV Tower

The tower is in Prague. It stands 216 meters high and looks like a tall, thin spaceship. There's a restaurant on the top providing  views of the city skyline. The city  its beautiful buildings, so when the tower was put up in 1985, many felt it didn't fit in.

The Longaberger Basket Company

It is in Newark, Ohio. The office block was opened in 1997 and looks like a large basket with two handles (提手). The handles  about 150 tons. It may not be the ugliest building in the world, but it's certainly one of the most unusual.

Should we say "thank you" to AI? Here are two o ideas. Some people consider it a w of energy and money. According to a CEO of an AI company, saying "thank you"  (花费) the company tens of millions of dollars every year, for AI has to reply every time. H , some argue that saying "thank you" to AI is necessary. In our real life, AI's r for humans is not simple; it can be a helper, a friend or even a family member. Whenever we feed it with a question, AI offers us as many possible  (答案) as we need. It can listen to us, comfort us, praise us and even c us up when we are sad. By showing politeness to AI, we could make o more warm-hearted and more willing to communicate with others. So, what's YOUR opinion?

We use language for all kinds of reasons, but the major one is to talk to each other. We use it to have a chat, play a game, tell jokes, ask for help, and do a thousand other things.  The everyday use of language is to have conversations with each other.

Having a conversation seems like the most natural thing in the world. We don't think twice about it now. But it wasn't always that way. We had to learn how to do it. 

What's the most basic rule of having a successful conversation? We take turns. I speak and then you do and then I do and then you do.  In an argument, we do sometimes hear a lot of people speaking together. But once the argument ends, everyone takes turns again.

This is especially important if there are several people taking part in a conversation. Imagine: you're in the street talking to three other people about the latest film Dear You.  If it's going to be a successful conversation, then all four of you need to get the chance to have your say. If that happens, everyone's happy. If that doesn't happen, you can end up feeling quite mad.

 We have to learn how to do it. And babies start that learning process (过程) very early on, during the first year of life. They hear their mother talking ... they coo or babble ... the mother replies ... they coo or babble again ... the mother replies again. Listen-speak-listen-speak-listen. That's the key of any conversation. We have to learn to be listeners as well as speakers.

I am a free dog called Johannes. I live in a large park by the sea. Freya is one of the three Bison (野牛) who live in an area with a fence (篱笆) within the park. Recently, I wanted to set them free and I almost succeeded.

Towards the end of the journey, Freya said to me, "We can't go on that ship."

"But it's right down there," I said. "We've already done the hard part. The goats (羊) have performed their duties, jumping and crying and making chaos (混乱) all around, so you wouldn't be found when you hid among them. Everything's ready." I was worried, for the sky was growing brighter, and it would be more difficult for the goats to hide the Bison from humans as they went down the hill.

"No," Freya said. "We're not going. We thought we could, but this short journey has already proven we are not ready for more. We can't make it."

"But why let me—let all of us—go through all this trouble?" I asked.

"You needn't be angry," Freya said. "Or sad. Or even surprised. Look at us. We're slow and old. We couldn't go across the sea in strange boats. Seeing this is enough."

She was still looking at the morning sea, which had grown brighter and whiter. She turned to me then. "Thank you, Johannes." She turned to the goats. "We are so thankful. We have lived quiet lives. But you have freed our eyes and our minds. What you did today mattered a great deal. You gave us the sea. And we will not forget it."

I tried to organize my thoughts. Was all this for nothing? And would we all have to go back to the park? I stood on the top of that small mountain, wondering what to do.

Then one of the goats said to me, "You could come with us. We will protect you, and when you reach the mainland, you can stay with us, or simply run free. There are a million free dogs like you. You can run with them and see places and things."

I thought about this. I knew it was true. I knew I would go.
