Humans often talk to animals,but the animals have never been able to talk back—until now.With the help of artificial intelligence(AI),an animal museum is allowing visitors to have conversations with several animals,inclu- ding some animals that have died out.AI is a form of technology that can learn from experience and do things that usually require human intelligence(智慧).

Over the next few weeks at the Museum of Zoology in Cambridge,England,visitors can use their mobile phones to scan( 扫描 )special codes next to 13 animal exhibits(展览品). This will open a chat box on the visitor's phone and allow them to have a conversation with the animal.Visitors can find out more about certain animals,such as where they came from and how they were prepared before going on show.Visitors can talk to animals such as a whale,a giraffe and a red panda.There  are animals which have  died out,such as the  dodo.In turn,the  chats will show what visitors really want to know,helping staff to improve the museum.

Jack Ashby,assistant director at the museum,said they also wonder what influence the conversations will have on people."We want to see whether chatting with the animals will change people's opinion about them."

As he crossed the finish line of China's Wuhan Marathon(马拉松),Ma Zhiyong sent a message to  (he)family:"I'm safe."Although the Wuhan Marathon marked Ma's 18th full marathon,the start ey as a runner was a sad thing.

Ma,55-year-old man from Chengde City.Hebei Province,has had three operations for cancer.

①Root carving(根雕)is a special traditional art in China with a long history.It uses natural tree roots to create beautiful artworks.The art combines the natural beauty and human creativity.Different from other carvings,root carving needs to follow an important rule:"30%human work,70%nature."This means root carvers must make full use of the natural shapes of tree roots.

②In the small villages of Chuxiong,Yunnan Province,root carvers have been closely connected with tree roots since childhood.Every fine tree root is considered a treasure by the root carvers.It is very hard to find fine tree root materials, so the root carvers would even search for them in the dark caves(山洞) .If they are lucky enough to find a fine tree root,the root carvers can be happy for a whole day.

Not long ago, a farmer named Musa Darboe from The Gambia put a bag of rice at the tomb(坟墓)of Mr.Yuan Longping in China.This isn't the first time for Musa to show his thanks.Back in May,he made a video to thank Mr. Yuan.Then,he traveled over 12,000 kilometers to bring his gift in person.

Musa,47,is a farmer in The Gambia.He thinks of Mr.Yuan as his teacher.Their story started when Musa faced big problems.He returned to The Gambia in 2019 after his father died to run the family farm.But farming was very hard and slow.People planted and harvested(收割)everything by hand.Heavy rain killed his first crops( 庄 稼) . He almost gave up.

Then,Chinese farming experts came to The Gambia.They brought amazing machines and taught farmers to better grow crops.Using modern methods,Musa's farm produced much more rice—two or three times more than other farms.His small farm even helped other farmers.

Last July, Musa took a bag of rice grown with the help of China.He gave it to a reporter and said,"Please take this back to Hunan."Giving this rice was his way of saying"thank you".Now,that special bag of rice sits in a museum in Hunan.

Last week,our science teacher,Mrs.Li, gave us a special task—to record the wonders of nature through observation(观察) . She encouraged us to step out of our classroom and explore the world around us. For me,that meant setting out to see the growth of a butterfly.It was more than just a project—it was a journey that brought me closer to the magic of life itself.

Wuhan is a beautiful city with a long h. It lies on the two sides of the Yangtze River, and it is known as the "River City".

Every year, millions of t  come to visit Wuhan. They come to climb the Yellow Crane Tower, walk along the East Lake Greenway, and t  the delicious Wuhan food, such as hot dry noodles, reganmian. Wuhan is also a city with a red history. The 1911 Revolution started here, and there are many historical places for people to learn about the past.

As a middle school student in Wuhan, I love my city very much. I feel lucky to live here. I have s  here for over 10 years. I have seen the great changes of Wuhan. The streets are cleaner, the parks are more beautiful, and the people are f  than before.

In the future, I want to make my own contribution to Wuhan. I will study hard to i  myself, so that I can help build a better Wuhan. I hope that more and more people will know about Wuhan, and f  in love with this lovely city, just like me. I believe that Wuhan will have an even b  future.

I have always wanted to be a volunteer in my community. Last month, my dream finally .

I joined the community volunteer team to help the elderly people who live alone. At first, I was a little nervous. I was afraid that they would feel  and didn't want to talk with me. But when I visited the first old lady, Mrs. Li, she welcomed me warmly. She told me stories about her life when she was young, and I listened to her carefully. We became friends soon.

Every weekend, I go to visit them. I help them clean the house, buy vegetables, and teach them how to use smart phones. They are always very happy to see me. Last week, we held a party for the elderly, and many of them sang and danced. They said they felt very warm  our care.

I am so  myself. Being a volunteer not only helps others, but also makes me grow a lot. I will never  this meaningful thing, and I will call on more people to join us.

The Yangtze Finless Porpoise, known as the "smiling angel of the Yangtze River", is a national first-class protected animal in China. It only lives in the Yangtze River, and Wuhan is one of the most important habitats for this lovely animal.

In recent years, with the 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River and the efforts of protection workers, the number of Yangtze Finless Porpoises has been increasing. According to the latest report, the number of porpoises in the Yangtze River has reached 1249 in 2023, which is a big increase from 1012 in 2017. In Wuhan section of the Yangtze River, people can often see porpoises jumping out of the water, especially in the Tianxingzhou and Baishazhou areas.

Many people in Wuhan have joined the porpoise protection team. There are over 2000 volunteer monitors in Wuhan, who take photos of porpoises, record their living conditions, and report any illegal activities that may hurt them. Every weekend, many students from middle schools and universities also take part in the protection activities. They give out leaflets to tell people how to protect the porpoises and the Yangtze River.

"Seeing the porpoises swimming freely in the river is the happiest thing for me," said Zhang Xianfeng, a 60-year-old volunteer who has been protecting porpoises for over 10 years. "The Yangtze River is our mother river, and the porpoises are our friends. We must do our best to protect them, so that our children can also see these smiling angels in the future."

The protection of the Yangtze Finless Porpoise is a long-term task. It needs everyone's effort. As the old saying goes, "Protecting the porpoises is protecting the Yangtze River, and protecting the Yangtze River is protecting ourselves."

When I was in Grade 8, I was very afraid to speak English in class. I was always worried that I would make mistakes and my classmates would laugh at me. So I always kept silent in English class, even when I knew the answer.

One day, our English teacher Ms. Li asked us to give a speech in front of the class. The topic was "My Dream". I was so nervous that I didn't sleep well the night before. I wrote the speech again and again, and practiced it over 100 times. I even recorded my voice to make sure my pronunciation was correct.

When the day came, I stood on the platform, my legs were shaking and my heart was beating fast. I looked at the whole class, and I almost couldn't say a word. Then I looked at Ms. Li, and she smiled at me warmly. Her smile was like a bright light, which gave me courage. I took a deep breath and started to speak. I spoke slowly and clearly, and I didn't stop until I finished the whole speech.

To my surprise, my classmates all clapped for me warmly. Ms. Li walked up to me and said, "Well done! Your speech is wonderful, and you are very brave to stand here and show yourself." I was so happy that I almost cried. For the first time, I felt confident about speaking English.

After that, I changed a lot. I no longer feared to speak English in class. Every time the teacher asked a question, I put up my hand actively. I joined the school English club, and took part in many English speaking competitions. I even won the first prize in the city's middle school English speech competition last year.

Now I know that no one is born good at everything. If you want to overcome your fear, just take the first step bravely. Every small progress will make you better and better. I will always remember Ms. Li's smile, which lights up my way of learning English forever.

Wuhan Yellow Crane Tower Study Tour Notice

We are going to have a study tour to the Yellow Crane Tower, one of the most famous landmarks of Wuhan, on Friday, April 18th. Here is the information you need to know.

Schedule:

• 7:30 a.m. Meet at the school gate and take the school bus to the Yellow Crane Tower.

• 9:00 a.m. Visit the tower with a guide, learn about its 1800-year history and classic poems about it.

• 11:30 a.m. Have a picnic in the nearby Shouyi Park.

• 1:30 p.m. Take part in the calligraphy and poem writing experience activity.

• 3:30 p.m. Take the school bus back to school.

Tips:

1. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as we will walk a lot.

Last month, I took part in the volunteer activity for the Wuhan Marathon. I was so1 when I got the chance, because I had always wanted to do something for this big event in my hometown.

On the day of the marathon, I got up very early2 the sun was just rising. I put on my volunteer uniform and went to the assigned place. My job was to 3 water and snacks to the runners.

When the first runners passed by, I was so excited that I 4 my hands and shouted "Come on!" loudly. Some runners smiled and nodded to me,5 others were too tired to say anything. But I could see the 6 in their eyes when they took the water.
