5、Feeling hot? So is Earth. Because of problems like climate (气候) change and bad ways of farming, much of the land is drying up. What can we do to solve this problem?
The United Nations set up a holiday. In 1994, the UN started World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (世界防治荒漠化和干旱日), to let more people know about desertification. It is on June 17 every year.
Desertification happens when healthy land filled with water and nutrients (营养) becomes desert. It is dry and unhealthy. Every year, 20,000 km² to 50,000 km² of Earth's land is lost to desertification. In Africa scientists predict (预测) that about 70% of Africa's healthy land will be lost by 2025.
Desertification sometimes happens because of climate change. Big and fast changes in temperature can kill plants and trees.
However, it also happens because people use land too much, and in bad ways, to grow food on their farms. If we grow too many plants in the same soil (土壤) within too short a time, it will take away the soil's nutrients. That can turn the soil into dry sand, like a desert.
The UN suggests some different actions to stop desertification. One is to teach people better ways of farming, including the use of better fertilizers (肥料). Another is reforestation (重新造林). It means planting more trees. Today China has 61 million hectares (公顷) of new land to plant trees—more than anywhere else in the world.
(1)、What is land like if desertification happens?A、It is full of water. B、It has more nutrients. C、It is dry and unhealthy. D、It is easy to live on.(2)、What do scientists guess will happen in Africa by 2025?A、There will be 20,000 km² of land desertification in Africa. B、Africa will have about 50,000 km² of healthy land. C、Growing plants will help Africa have more healthy land. D、Most of Africa's land will be dry and unhealthy.(3)、Why isn't it good to grow too many plants in the same soil?A、Because it can change the climate fast. B、Because it can take away the soil's nutrients. C、Because it can change dry sand into bad soil. D、Because it can take the places of forests.(4)、Which of the following does NOT cause desertification?A、Climate change. B、Overusing the land. C、Using poor fertilizers. D、Plant more trees.(5)、What's the main idea of the last paragraph?A、The UN's advice for stopping desertification. B、The UN's plans for improved farming. C、The importance of reforestation. 6、On a weekend during Spring Festival, my parents and I were sitting in a restaurant. The drinks and food were good. When we finished, my father called the waiter and asked for the bill (账单). It was a lovely meal, so my father wanted to leave a tip (小费). As we were ready to open the door to leave, the waiter caught up with us. He gave the tip back to us. My dad forgot that here in China, and tipping is not common.
However, in some countries, tipping is the custom (习俗). That's the way it is in the US. It's said to be good manners to tip those in the service sector (服务行业), including your waiter, taxi driver, hairdresser, doorman and so on. The better the service is, the higher the tip will be. But we usually give a tip between 15% and 20% of the bill. It can really put your math skills to the test!
So why is there a strong custom of tipping? In the US, waiters have a very low income (收入). But they can make more money from tips. As a US writer once wrote about her experience as a waitress, "It was difficult and I lived and died by my tips."
(1)、Why did the waiter give the tip back to the writer's family?A、Because the meal wasn't good enough. B、Because we don't need to tip in China. C、The waiter thought they paid too much. D、The waiter didn't want the tip.(2)、How much would someone tip the waiter for an 80-dollar meal in the US?A、5 dollars. B、15 dollars. C、25 dollars. D、80 dollars.(3)、Tipping is a custom in the US because ________.A、people, such as waiters, offer service to customers B、many waiters ask customers to give tips C、people working in the service sector don't make much money D、American people enjoy helping others(4)、What does the writer's words "It was difficult and I lived and died by my tips." mean?A、The writer's life was hard and tips were important to make a living. B、The writer had a very easy life through getting tips. C、The writer didn't care much about tips. D、The writer had high income besides tips.(5)、The story is mainly about ________.A、how to give a tip in the US B、some customs in China C、having a meal in China D、tipping customs in China and the US -
7、As we all know, safety is a very important thing to us students. Then how can we students keep ourselves safe? Here are some suggestions.
On our way home or to school
Wait for the green traffic lights, and look left and right before we cross the road. If we see a car coming, don't cross until it is really safe. Dress in bright colours, so the drivers can see us clearly.
At school
When students around us begin to push, try to hold onto something, or stay in a safe corner. If we fall down in a crowded place, cover our head with both hands.
When there's a fire
Stay calm and leave quickly. Use a piece of wet cloth to cover our mouth and nose so that we don't take in smoke (烟雾). If our clothes catch fire, please drop to the ground and roll from side to side to put out the fire.
For riding the escalators (自动扶梯)
Hold onto the handrails (扶手). It is dangerous to run up and down on the escalator.
Remember these! They must be helpful to us.

8、While I was quietly reading on a train in the morning, suddenly, I found myself listening to the announcements (广播). When a trainman makes an announcement, it is often quite boring. But this one was1. As I looked up from my paper, I noticed others also2. Not only that, they smiled!
Why did people pay so much attention to this announcement?
Here is what the trainman said, "Good morning, ladies, gentlemen and children. It's 8:00 am and you'll be3 to know that we are right on time. What a lovely morning it is in Sydney today! The sun is shining, and the temperature is about 22 degrees. Birds are singing, and all is right with the world. Thanks for taking my4 and I hope to see you again. Have a great day!" Wow! Do you often hear an announcement like that? I5 do. With a light smile on people's faces, quite a few of them started talking to each other about how good the message made6 feel.
As I7 the train, I ran to the young trainman to thank him. He looked a bit8 at first. I said, "Well, I just wanted to thank you for your lovely message on the way and it9 everyone's attention and made us smile. Thank you so much for giving us a good start to the day." "Oh, it's my pleasure." he answered politely.
