A CHOKING FIRST AID

Choking (噎住) on food can be dangerous sometimes. We can use the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) to help them. It is easy to learn.

For adults and kids over 1 year old:

⒈Call 120 first before you help.

⒉This way works for adults and kids older than one year. Do not use it for babies under 1 year.

⒊If the person can talk, cough or breathe, don't do this.

For babies under 1 year old:

In Queshan, Henan, there is a special "firework". It is made from very hot liquid iron (液态铁). People use two sticks to throw the hot iron into the air. Then, it creates amazing sparks (火花) in the sky. People stand together to1 the amazing iron flowers. This wonderful show is called datiehua.

Datiehua has a2 of over 1,000 years. The word "hua (flower)" sounds like "fa (becoming rich)", so people believe they can have good luck and3 by saying it. In 2008, China listed datiehua as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产) to4 this old tradition.

A woman keeps a bird and she really likes it. But one day the bird flies away. The woman is sad and goes out to look for it in the forest near her home. At last, she meets the bird.

The woman says happily, "Will you go home with me, my bird?" The bird is also happy to see the woman, but it says no.

"Take me to your home and let me see how you live." the woman says. The bird takes the woman to its new home. She finds it lives well with many other birds. So she decides to go back home alone. Before she leaves, the bird gives her a basket.

When she gets home, she tells her husband what happens. Her husband opens the basket and sees a lot of gold (金子). The man is very greedy (贪婪的) and he goes to the bird's home, too.

"Hello, my bird. I miss you very much." cries the man falsely (虚伪地). In fact, he is not friendly to the bird when it lives with him. The bird just says nothing. It takes out two baskets, a light one and a heavy one. The bird asks him to choose one and he can open it after he gets home.

Of course, he chooses the heavy one and takes it home. But when he opens the basket, he finds it is full of stones (石头)!

 Spider monkeys, for example, can swing from tree to tree with their tails. They can also hold food with them.

A rattlesnake's (响尾蛇的) tail makes a noise to scare away other animals.  Think of a dog wagging (摇) its tail when it is excited. Parrots also move their tails to show they are happy.

If you had a tail, what would you use it for?

Zhang Xue was born (出生) in Mayang, Hunan. His parents divorced (离婚) when he was 10. After that, Zhang and his younger sister lived with their grandmother.

At 16, Zhang finished middle school and then started to work in a motorcycle repair (修理) shop. From then on, he began riding motorcycles. "Riding is my only hobby. I can't think of anything more interesting," he said.

At 19, Zhang had a smart idea. He asked a TV news program to film him riding. He hoped a racing team would notice his skill. "I don't have money and I don't know anyone. I just want a chance (机会) to be seen so that I can join a good motorcycle team," he told the reporter.

In 2013, with only 20,000 yuan in his pocket, he went to Chongqing, the "Motorcycle Capital (摩托车之都)" of China. In his heart, he had an even bigger dream: to build the best motorcycles in the world!

In 2024, he started his own company — ZXMOTO. On March 28, 2026, a French rider rode Zhang's motorcycle and won first place in the first race of the World Superbike Championship (世界超级摩托车锦标赛).

When Zhang left school, he told his classmates his dream was to fix motorcycles. "Now my dream is to make ZXMOTO a top 10 motorcycle brand in the world in 10 years," he said.

Many people go to Australia for vacation. What is the weather like there? The weather changes a lot! Why? Because Australia is a large country. The weather in different parts of the country is different.

The north of Australia is warm or hot all year because it is closer to the equator (赤道). And summer is also a rainy season.

The weather around Sydney is warm in winter. The lowest temperature is about 10℃. Summer there is warmer and the temperature is about 26℃.

However, if you think all parts of the country are warm all year, you'll be wrong. Some parts of Australia are very cold in winter. In some places in Tasmania and Victoria, VIC, you can see snow and temperatures are under zero. In fact, Australia also has snow in winter, but not as much as Switzerland.

Anyway, Australia is a good place to visit. You can enjoy everything there from sunbathing at the seaside to knocking (敲) snow off your shoes after a day's skiing. If you want to go there for a visit, all you should think about is the weather there.

Welcome to the village of Xunpu in Fujian Province! Here, you can not only taste delicious seafood, but also experience the traditional culture of Zanhua (簪花).

What is Zanhua? Women put their hair into a bun (发髻) and wear a wreath (花环). The wreath is decorated with different flowers.

This tradition has long been an important part of local life. Women wear flowers when they take part in celebrations. They also wear flowers when they sell seafood at the local market. This way, buyers can tell the difference between them and sellers from nearby villages.

Zanhua has been listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (非遗)of China. Since January, 2025, it has received a lot of attention on the internet. This tradition has attracted tens of thousands of visitors from all over the country. Today, there are more than 150 Zanhua stores in the village. You can choose from many different headdress designs. Come and try it for yourself.

We all know that China is the birthplace of tea culture. But do you know about the different tea  of some other countries?

Tea was brought to Japan from China in the  century (世纪) by a traveling monk. The custom of tea drinking would later become  important part of Japanese culture. In Japan, serving tea is an art. People use beautiful tea bowls and enjoy the peace of the tea room.

India is one of the  tea makers in the world. It also learned the art of tea-drinking from China centuries ago. Tea  very popular in India. In fact, 70 percent of the tea it makes is drunk by its own people. Traditional Indian chai is a type of black tea.  unlike Chinese black tea, Chai is mixed together  strong spices (香料) such as ginger (姜).

Turkey also  a tea culture. Tea was brought to the country from China in the nineteenth century. The traditional Turkish tea cup is in the form of a tulip (郁金香). The tea is  served very hot and one has to hold the cup by its lower rim (边沿). Most often, salty or sweet biscuits  along with the tea.

NATURE is a great musician. The sounds of rain, birdsong or leaves in the wind are all part of its music. These sounds make us feel different emotions. For this 1 , they have been used in many songs. 2 , nature has never received award or praise for its important role in music. Now, with Sounds Right, things are beginning to 3 .

Sounds Right is a new project of the Museum for the United Nations. This 4 looks at nature as a special artist. Many musicians from different countries have joined the project. They add nature 5 to their songs and share the benefits with nature.

People call Earth the "water planet".

That's because the ocean covers over 70 percent of Earth. The ocean is very important. It helps us in many ways.

The ocean is like Earth's lungs (肺). It makes over half of the world's oxygen (氧气). Also, the ocean takes in 50 times more carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) than our atmosphere (大气层).

There are some canals (运河) in the oceans. By using these canals, people can move things from one country to another. This is usually cheaper than moving things by plane. Thanks to the canals, you can have chocolate from Switzerland and milk from New Zealand.

The ocean also keeps Earth warm. It takes in and stores heat from the sun. Then the water in the ocean carries that heat around Earth. Without oceans, Earth would be an icy rock. Also, by moving water around Earth, the ocean helps keep places from getting too hot or too cold.

Besides, the ocean gives us different kinds of seafood and vegetables, such as fish, shrimp and kelp.

I'm Lucy and I fell in love with The Secret Garden a long time ago. After rereading it recently, I realized that the book is inspiring not only for young readers but also for adults.

When we first meet Mary Lennox, she is a spoiled child. She is also unhealthy. Sadly, her parents die when she was ten years old. Then she is sent to live with her uncle. On the surface, Uncle's home seems like nothing more than a huge, dark house. But soon, Mary discovers that the house has many secrets. After finding an old key, Mary unlocks a hidden garden. Little by little, she works to bring the garden back to life. In the process, she changes into a kind-hearted and energetic girl.

The Secret Garden has always attracted me for several reasons. First, the character development is wonderful. Also, the beautiful descriptions of nature really interest me. Most importantly, I love the novel's message about positive change. As Mary and her friends improve the garden, their friendship grows stronger, and they become happier. The Secret Garden reminds us that there is beauty and hope even in dark times.

I'm happy to have read The Secret Garden again. The book deserves a place in your reading list, so I strongly recommend it to all of you.

Good manners are necessary to show respect for others. Here are several ways to keep good manners. Let's read together:

One day, a boy named Tom was hanging his clothes out to dry. Suddenly, a gust of wind (一阵强风) blew his shirt into the sky. Tom followed his "flying" shirt to a palace. The wind turned into a girl. She took the shirt and entered the palace.

After Tom knocked on the door, a woman appeared. "I am wind's mother," she said. "I'm sorry that my naughty daughter took your things." She then led Tom to a room filled with boxes. "You can find your missing things in these boxes," the woman said.

Tom opened the boxes one by one — many of them had gold (金子) inside. Finally, he found the box with his shirt. He took that box, thanked the woman and left the palace.

When Tom returned home, he opened the box. Besides his shirt, some gold and a note were lying inside it! The note read, "The gold is a gift to you for your honesty and politeness."

Tom's neighbor Jack heard the story. Jack threw one of his shirts into the wind on purpose and followed it. He walked into the palace and took a box of gold with him. When he opened the box at home, however, the gold inside it quickly disappeared in a gust of wind.
