David used to spend his free time playing video games alone. His parents were worried and often told him to go outside more. One day, his cousin Lily invited him to join a weekend hiking group. "It's just to walk in the hills and enjoy nature. Come on, give it a go!" she said.

David was unsure. He wasn't sporty and felt scared to try something new with strangers. But Lily encouraged him not to worry. "We all start somewhere. The group leader is a great instructor. He's there to help everyone," she added.

David finally agreed to go. The first hike was tiring. David was the slowest, and he almost decided to give up halfway. The group leader, Mr. Chen, walked beside him. "You're doing well. The point is to finish, not to be the fastest," he said with a smile. Those words made David decide to keep going.

To his surprise, when they reached the top, the view was breathtaking. He felt a sense of achievement he never got from video games. Now, David looks forward to the weekly hikes. He has made new friends and even helps Mr. Chen encourage other beginners. He learned that sometimes, you need someone to push you a little to discover a whole new world of joy.

Learning a new skill is a journey that often starts with a simple decision to try. Last term, my school started a "Hobby Exploration Week ".  I had always thought calligraphy was too difficult and serious for me.

On the first day, I watched the calligraphy teacher make beautiful strokes with a brush. It looked peaceful. " Do you want to give it a go? " she asked me kindly. " Just hold the brush like this, " she said, guiding my hand. My first character was shaky, and the ink went everywhere. I felt a little embarrassed.

 She told me her first try was even worse and that everyone starts as a beginner. Her story made me feel better. She also told me not to push myself for perfect results but to enjoy the feeling of the brush on paper.

I decided to keep practising.  I focused on the process, not the perfect shape of the characters. I even started to love the smell of the ink.

By the end of the week, I wasn't an expert, but I could write my name nicely.  It taught me that the hardest part is often just deciding to start. Now, I know that with a little courage to begin and some patience to continue, I can learn many new things.
