In most languages, people often start small talk after a greeting. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: "Nice day, isn't it?" "Terrible weather, isn't it?" But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something that both people have the same opinion about. The purpose (目的 ) of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion (宗教) or politics (政治) , so these are not suitable topics for small talk. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: "Great game, isn't it?" At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: "The bus service is terrible, isn't it?"

Small talk is an important part of conversation in any language. People in different countries start small talk in different ways. This shows that when we learn a language, we should learn the vocabulary and the grammar as well as the social behavior of the people who speak it.

Cantonese Opera，with a history of over 500 years，is one of China's most important cultural treasures. It started in Guangdong during the Ming Dynasty. It mixes singing，acting，martial arts，and acrobatics into a lively performance art. Known as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006，it not only shows the local culture of Guangzhou but also connects Cantonese communities around the world. 

In its early days，Cantonese Opera was performed in the Central Plains dialects （方言）To make it easier for local audiences to understand，artists began using Cantonese in the late Qing Dynasty. During the 1911 Revolution，artists spread patriotic idea and encouraged people to fight against bad traditions in their shows. After 1949，the Chinese government helped protect this art by building theatres like the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre and training new artists. 

Cantonese Opera expresses cultural values through its stories and symbolic colors. Famous stories such as The purple Hairpin teach values like loyalty，family love，and kindness，making it both interesting and educational. Over time，the art has developed unique features. Performers use colorful makeup and costumes--red for loyalty，black for honesty，and white for cleverness—though simpler"red-white face"makeup is more common today. Costumes have changed from Ming Dynasty styles to beautifully embroidered designs，helping actors show different roles through their clothing. 

Today，Cantonese Opera is still popular not only in Guangdong，Hong Kong，and Macao but also in overseas Chinese communities. It shows the beauty of Chinese traditional art. Through TV and modern stages，this ancient art continues to share Chinese stories and values with young people. 

How much do you love animals？The work of photographer Joel Sartore might surprise you. He has a big plan：to travel around the world and take pictures of as many animal species as possible. His photos help people see the special beauty of every creature. 

Sartore is working to take photos of all 20，000 different types of animals living in zoos，aquariums and wildlife shelters in the world. And he's already taken nearly 15，000!He hopes his photos will ask people to pay attention to this planet's most endangered creatures and to record them before they're gone.

Sartore calls his project the Photo Ark，like the story of Noah's Ark，in which a large boat is built to save every type of animal in the world from a flood. He founded the Photo Ark in 2006 in his hometown of Lincoln，Nebraska. 

He doesn't just take his animal photos in the usual zoo environment，however—he puts each animal on a black or white background with studio lights. This helps him photograph their true colors，and lets people see a little mouse as clearly as a big elephant—and look each animal straight in the eye. "When people connect to animals through eye contact，we've got a real chance at changing human behavior，"Sartore says. 

Sartore has more than 1.6 million followers online and a best-selling series of Photo Ark books. He asks people to buy his books and photos，give money to the Photo Ark，and support zoos，aquariums and wildlife shelters near where they live.
