My pet dog

I'm Andy. I keep a dog at home.

Some animals sleep during the winter because the weather is very cold and it is difficult for them to find food. They sleep for a long time. This kind of winter sleep is called hibernation（冬眠）。

If an animal moves a lot, it needs lots of food. Hibernating animals do not need to eat much because they don't move. Their hearts beat（跳动）very slowly and they also breathe slowly. They always find a place out of danger. Their body fat can keep them warm.

Some animals, such as bears, may wake up from their hibernation on warm winter days and then quickly go back to sleep again when they see there is still snow outside. When the weather becomes warmer in spring, the animals start to wake up and look for food again.

I'm a guide dog named Peter. Next to me is my best friend. His name is Rick. He is a little different from others. He (can) see anything. So he usually asks me (help) him walk around.

Rick works at the radio station（电 台）. He likes his job very much. Every day, he (get) to his office early. He's seldom away  his work. Rick is also a music lover. He enjoys (sing) and playing the guitar in his free time. He thinks music can help him feel about the world. Sometimes he even teaches me  to play the guitar. But I can't do it.

To keep Rick safe, I never leave him. Every day, I go everywhere with him. Some people think I'm scary because I'm big. But in fact, I'm very friendly to people. Sometimes someone doesn't let me take the bus or the taxi, and doesn't let me go to the shops, either. I feel quite (happy) about these things. At this time, Rick always tells others I'm a nice dog and a good friend of (he).

After work, Rick is very tired, so I always get things for him at home. He treats me very (good). He often gives many kinds  food to me. He wants me to be much stronger and healthier. We are good friends and good friends always help each other.

I have a pet. His name is Lucky.  My parents love him too. He is also one of our family members.

When he was a small dog, he was very shy and he seldom barked.  Maybe the dog just wanted to play with him, but he stayed behind me and looked at me sadly. He seemed to ask me for help. 

But my little dog barked loudly when there was a fire in the kitchen. I was very surprised at that time why he was so excited and ran around me all the time.  With his reminding（提醒）, we put out the fire as fast as we could in the end.

There is an old saying about pets in my hometown: To love your pet is to love yourself. I agree with it so much.  When we stay together, we enjoy ourselves like friends. Life is just like this: We need a friend with us till the end.

①My first home was a beautiful grassland with a lake of clear water. My mother and I had a happy life there. One day, my owner—Farmer Grey sold me to Squire Gordon. Mr. Gordon lived with his family in a big house.

②"You' re a beautiful horse," he said. "You have a beautiful black coat. I shall call you Black Beauty."

③My master had two other horses. One of them was Merrylegs. He was friendly. The other was Ginger. She was different. She liked biting and kicking people because she had a hard life when she was young.

④Ginger and I pulled a coach（四轮大马车）together. The coachman's name was John. I worked very hard and made friends with Ginger soon.

⑤One day in autumn, Mr. Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr. Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a bridge. When my feet touched the bridge, I was sure something was wrong, and I stopped suddenly. Mr. Gordon and John wanted me to go on, but I did not move. Just then a man saw us, "Hey there! Stop!" he cried.

⑥"What is it?" shouted Mr. Gordon.

⑦"____ ," the man answered. "If you come across, you are all going to drown（淹死）in the river."

⑧"Thank God!" said Mr. Gordon. "Thank you, Beauty!" said John. We turned around and went along the road by the river. For a long time no one said anything. Then John said, "Black Beauty saved our lives."

⑨When we returned home, Mr. Gordon told his wife, "We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty!"

Around the world, many wild（野生的）animals are in danger of extinction（灭 绝） because they have no place to live in. Endangered（濒危的）wild animals live all over the world and you may find some in your hometown. Here are some steps for protecting endangered animals.

Step 1: Find out what animals are in danger. Spend some time learning about animals and what their favorite places are.

Step 2: Do something for nature reserves（自然保护区）. Nature reserves are good places to help protect endangered animals. You can give some money to nature reserves or spend your time helping the nature reserves to protect endangered animals.

Step 3: Never buy anything that is made from endangered animals. Don't do harm to endangered animals or their living places. Instead, we should try our best to protect them.

Step 4: Join an endangered animal protection organization（组织）. You can save animals through the organization by planting more trees and calling for more people to protect animals.

If everyone works hard to protect endangered animals, we' ll get a more beautiful world. Let's take action from now on!

Have you ever imagined what bees can do with their tiny brains? Now scientists are looking into a bee's brain.

Clint Perry, a scientist, has spent much time studying how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals. "The main difficulty is to design（设计）an experiment（实验）and get what we want," he says. "With humans, we can ask them a question and get an answer. But we can't use the same way to get an answer from bees. They are just trying to get sugar. Bees like sugar."

The fact that bees like sugar is helpful for scientists to design experiments. For example, in one experiment, Perry gave bees a task: to find delicious sugar on a landing place above a black bar（棒）. Perry made the task easier or harder by moving the landing place farther from or closer to the black bar. He found that bees would avoid the task when it was difficult. And when the task was easy, bees would try it.

As for humans, we might choose not to take a test when we aren't ready for it. And we might choose to take the test when we are well prepared. In the same way, bees seem to make decisions like humans.

Perry points out that we are not sure whether bees actually make a thoughtful choice from experiments. Now scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. But learning more about how bees' brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information.
