    "Put yourself in someone else's shoes" is an idiom that means if you imagine yourself to be in another person's s, good or bad, you may understand how they feel, good or bad, or why they have done what they've done.

    This idiom comes from the fact that a pair of shoes that fits someone well may not fit another person. Therefore, literally, only if you put on another person's shoes can you feel what it is like to walk in them.

    Metaphorically (比喻地) speaking, "their shoes" stands for other people's position. For example, an author was criticized in many r on his latest book, and one of his friends might privately say to himself: "I wouldn't want to be in his shoes now". That is, p that nothing happened doesn't work at all, and he certainly doesn't want to be hurtful. By trying to "put on their shoes", we try to imagine ourselves in their position, by seeing things from their point of view, by thinking about how we would want to be t if we were them.

    Harper Lee, of course, has expressed this idea best in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." In g, it is a better idea to put yourself in his shoes for a while before judging a person.

    Did your family get together to elect a member to do the dishes after meals? Are you one of the people who think doing housework is annoying?

    Washing dishes can reduce anxiety. People who cleaned their plates mindfully, such as focusing on smelling the soap, feeling the water temperature, and touching the dishes, could lower their nervousness levels by 27%.

    Clearing the kitchen is closely related to body health. A recent study showed that people with untidy homes were 77% more likely to be overweight. People tend to eat high-calorie snacks rather than green vegetables when they stay in a messy kitchen. As we all know, this unbalanced diet can finally make people lose control of their weight, and can even be harmful to their health.

    Your mom is right: Starting your day with a freshly made bed is what people call a "keystone habit". It has a chain reaction to bring about a series of good phenomena(现象). Getting up with a tidy bed every morning is linked to better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking to a budget. Bed-makers also report getting a better night's sleep than those who leave their covers messy in the morning.

    Growing flowers and vegetables can lower depression risk. It can provide aerobic(有氧的)exercise via weeding, cutting, and raking. Additionally, gardening activities such as spading, lifting, and tilling can strengthen and tone your muscles, providing you with good anaerobic(无氧的)exercise. Mild exercise has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression. So does gardening. Its effect on reducing anxiety and depression is evident, too.

    A. But few people can realize the effect of it.

    B. Making bed every morning can raise productivity.

    C. It looks like relaxing, but the intensity is quite high.

    D. It may be because choosing healthy food in a messy kitchen is harder.

    E. The following four benefits of doing housework might change your mind.

  • 11、I remember the day I won the winter kite-fighting tournament (锦标赛) in Kabul. It was the highlight of my young life. My father, Baba, a strong and respected man in our city, had come to watch. For a boy like me, winning his approval (称许) meant everything. I wanted him to be proud of me.

    Kite fighting was not just a game; it was an exciting battle in the sky. The strings (线) of the kites were specially treated, coated (覆盖) with tiny pieces of glass. The goal was simple yet difficult: to cut the strings of your opponents' (对手) kites using your own string. The last kite left flying in the sky was the winner. However, the real fun began after the final kite was cut. That event started the "kite run". Children and adults would run through the streets, chasing the falling kite. Catching that last defeated kite was a great honor, a prized trophy (奖杯) that proved your skill.

    I was known as a great kite fighter, skilled at cutting other kites. But my success heavily depended on my best friend, Hassan. He was the greatest kite runner I had ever seen. He could always know exactly where a kite would land without even looking at its flight. He never made a mistake and never brought back the wrong kite. On that important winter day, I had successfully cut the last kite. I saw a look of hope and pride in Baba's eyes. Now, everything depended on Hassan. He had to bring that blue kite back to me.

    I returned home first, and Baba hugged me tightly and told everyone how proud he was. It was the moment I had always dreamed of. Later, filled with excitement, I went out to look for Hassan, wanting to share our victory. I found him in a quiet, dark alley (小巷), cornered by three older boys. The leader was Assef, a well-known cruel (残酷的) boy whom we all feared. Hassan was holding the blue kite tightly against his chest. He refused to give it to Assef. "Amir Agha won the tournament, and this is his kite," he said bravely.

    What happened next was terrible and painful to remember. Because Hassan would not give up the kite, Assef and his friends attacked him. They hurt him badly. I hid behind a wall and watched the whole scene (场景). My heart was pounding with fear, but I did nothing to help my friend. I was too scared to move. After a while, I turned around and ran away, leaving Hassan alone.

    Some time later, Hassan came home, with torn clothes and a bleeding face. He still held the blue kite in his hands. He walked up to me and handed it to me silently. I took the kite, but I couldn't look him in the eye. A heavy feeling of shame filled my heart. I knew I had failed him as a friend, and that feeling would stay with me for a very long time.

  • 12、Hawaii's governor has announced plans to create an extensive electric-car-charging network in an effort to rid the islands of high-priced oil. The plan, announced today by Governor Linda Lingle, calls for a public-private partnership with Better Place, a company that develops basic equipment to support electric vehicles. The Silicon Valley start-up, which made a similar deal with cities in California's San Francisco Bay Area last month, plans to install between 70,000 and 100,000 charging ports throughout Hawaii's four largest islands.

    Much of the electricity used to charge the vehicles is expected to come from renewable energy sources, according to Better Place CEO Shai Agassi. "Hawaii, with its ready access to renewable energy resources like solar, wind, wave and geothermal (地热), is the ideal location to serve as a blueprint for the rest of the U.S. in terms of reducing our dependence on foreign oil," said Mr. Agassi in a press conference. "Hawaii has made the promise to break its dependence on foreign oil, and is leading the way in coping with the most important economic and energy issues facing us today."

    Hawaii spends $7 billion on oil imports annually. The Wall Street Journal explains the scale of this burden: Hawaiians pay high electricity prices because costly oil is burned to produce power. The price of electricity ranges from 24.9 cents per kilowatt hour on Oahu to 38.5 cents on Hawaii, the Big Island, compared with an average of 8.9 cents in the continental U.S. Such high prices should encourage the development of renewable energy.

    The island state is well-suited to electric vehicles, as drivers rarely travel more than 100 miles at a time, reducing the need for stations where exhausted batteries are exchanged for fresh ones. The New York Times notes that Better Place hopes to get started in such island economies that have high energy costs and short trips, and then subsequently become more affordable for sure as the charging networks are scaled up.

    "We always knew Hawaii would be the perfect model," Mr. Agassi told the Times. "The typical driving plan is low and leisurely, and people are smiling." In addition to partnering with Hawaii and Bay Area cities, Better Place has begun building stations in Denmark, Israel, and Australia.

    (1)、What is the purpose of this passage?
    A、To introduce an ambitious electric car plan in Hawaii. B、To advertise the Hawaiian vehicle company—Better Place. C、To explain to the public the construction plan of Hawaii in 2012. D、To declare a fight against the high cost of electricity and oil in Hawaii.
    (2)、According to Better Place CEO Shai Agassi, renewable energy sources ________.
    A、are mainly accessible to Hawaii B、have been used effectively in Hawaii C、will be an ideal blueprint in the USA D、will be used to produce electric power
    (3)、From The Wall Street Journal report, we may learn that ________.
    A、there is a fixed price for electricity in the Hawaiian Islands B、Hawaii is burdened with debt due to large oil imports C、Hawaii turns to inexhaustible energy sources due to the high electricity cost D、people in the continental U.S. pay higher expenses for using electricity
    (4)、According to The New York Times, Better Place's plan is ________.
    A、completely creative B、increasingly profitable C、environmentally friendly D、highly practical
  • 13、On the Height

    The wind so swift, the sky so wide, apes wail and cry;

    Water so clear and beach so white, birds wheel and fly.

    The boundless forest sheds its leaves shower by shower;

    The endless river rolls its waves hour after hour.

    A thousand miles from home, I'm grieved at autumn's plight;

    I'll now and then for years, alone I'm on this height,

    Living in times so hard, at frosted hair I pine;

    Cast down by poverty, I have to give up wine.

    (Translated by Xu Yuanchong)

    When Du Fu (712-770) wrote this poem, he was 56 years old and was suffering from illness and poverty. Standing in front of autumn scenery, he recalled his life.

    From the first line, we can tell that Du was not in a good mood. The key phrase is "apes wail and cry" (猿啸哀)—only sad ears can hear sad sounds. Then the poet sees a forest of trees that are losing their leaves while the Yangtze River rolls on. The poet uses natural scenery to represent his own sadness.

    Despite being a talented scholar, Du's career was still a failure. With little money, he and his family constantly lived in hardship. So what he saw were showers and waves of sadness. Travelling should be fun when you have money and health. Sadly, Du had neither. Du travelled because he needed to keep himself alive. He went to different places to stay with relatives and friends, or to find temporary work. A life full of worries and sorrow turned his hair grey. What's worse, he couldn't even afford the wine he needed to numb (麻痹) his sad feelings. That makes the poem even sadder.

    This poem could be seen as the conclusion of a life that was full of ups and downs. Two years after writing this poem, Du passed away.

    (1)、How might Du Fu feel when he was travelling?
    A、Satisfied and relaxed. B、Worried and sad. C、Peaceful and calm. D、Hopeless and bored.
    (2)、In what way did the poet express his feelings in this poem?
    A、Personification. B、Putting feelings into natural scenery. C、Comparison. D、Telling stories.
    (3)、Which of the following rhyme patterns does this poem follow?
    A、aa-bb-cc-dd B、ab-ab-cd-cd C、ab-cd-ab-cd D、aa-bb-aa-bb
  • 14、It is widely recognized that consuming carrots benefits our eyes. But according to a study, grapes could be good for eye health as well. A recent study provides encouraging news for individuals trying to enhance their vision, who may not favor carrots.

    Scientists from Singapore raised the question whether eating foods rich in antioxidants (抗氧化剂) could influence one's eye health. Given the fact that grapes are full of antioxidants, they made an experiment that was joined in by 34 adults. Half of them had one and a half cups of grapes each day while the others had a placebo (安慰剂) snack, which tasted like grapes but had no antioxidants. The trial lasted 16 weeks. As planned, all participants were blinded: the 34 adults were unaware of whether they were eating the grapes or the placebo snack.

    Subsequent analysis revealed that those who ate grapes showed a marked increase in antioxidant capacity and a higher macular pigment optical density (MPOD) (黄斑色素光学密度). The macular pigment plays a crucial role in eye protection against blue light, a lot of which is extensively emitted by digital screens such as those of computers and smartphones. Dr Jung Eun Kim, a researcher of the study, explained that their study was the first to find that eating grapes could improve one's eye health.

    Eye health should not be taken for granted. It is important to take action to take good care of one's eyes. Besides eating foods rich in antioxidants, individuals who often face the screen should adopt protective habits. It is important to take breaks once in a while. Experts commonly recommend the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes in front of a screen, one should spend 20 seconds looking at something 20 feet away.

    (1)、What was the primary objective of the Singaporean researchers' study?
    A、See what carrots and grapes have in common. B、Find out whether eating foods rich in antioxidants influences eye health. C、Check whether the placebo snack is harmful to people's health. D、Prove why grapes are better than carrots for people.
    (2)、Which of the following about the adults in the experiment is TRUE?
    A、They were divided into three groups. B、They formed a habit of eating grapes. C、They weren't told exactly what to eat. D、They knew their eye health could improve a lot.
    (3)、What can we know about the macular pigment?
    A、It mainly exists in daily food. B、It plays a role in protecting eyes. C、It helps people see more blue light. D、It harms people's antioxidant abilities.
    (4)、What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
    A、The advice on eye health care. B、Some ways to choose places to study. C、The importance of protecting our eyes. D、The influence of foods on eye health.
