Parents are the first teachers in your life. They always love and help you. But sometimes you may have a fight with them. 

Enjoy life together. You should spend more time with your parents.  Go shopping together, read together or go to the movies together.

Show more care.  For example, you can make a meal for them. I completely believe it can make your parents happy.

 When you are in trouble or meet some upset things, you can ask your parents for help, they will tell you what to do with your problems.

Try your best. Your parents never ask you always to be the best, but they'll be happy to see you working hard.

Growing up is a journey full of pains and gains. Everyone will face different challenges in their growth. For example, disagreements with parents, failure in exams, or peer pressure. These experiences may make us feel sad or stressed, but they also help us grow.

A boy named Tom once had a big argument with his mother. He promised to be home before 9 pm, but he came back at 10:30 pm. His mother was very angry. Later, Tom explained that he helped an old woman who was lost find her way home. His mother felt sorry for being cross with him and was proud of his kindness. From this experience, Tom learned to communicate with his mother in time, and his mother learned to listen to Tom's story patiently.

Another example is Lily. She dreamed of being a dancer, but she failed the dance audition (选拔) because of her poor health. She was very disappointed. Her best friend encouraged her to try painting. At first, Lily just painted to take her mind off the failure. But soon she fell in love with painting and won many prizes. Lily realized that failure is not the end; it's a chance to try something new.

In fact, growing up is not about avoiding difficulties. It's about facing them bravely, learning from them, and becoming a better person. Every pain in growth will become a precious gain in the future.

David, aged 14, wants everyone in his school to know they're important members of the school. People are connected with each other. No one is an island. 

One day, David saw a sad boy on the playground. After talking with the boy, he knew that the boy felt lonely because he couldn't fit in well in the school. David remembered seeing some other students who felt lonely too. This made David come up with an idea. He wanted to give something special to everyone in the school to remind them that they were connected. David told his parents his idea. And they were very glad to support him.

After discussing the idea with his teachers and classmates, he decided on buttons (徽章). Together with his classmates, David printed the buttons with the sentence "____" Then they gave the buttons to each student in the school. David hoped that the buttons would help the students remember that they all belonged here. He also hoped the students could make friends actively.

Now, almost all the students in the school are wearing the buttons. The students in the school spend more time with each other than before. Even the students who were lonely before are interacting a lot more with others. David is very happy because he knows that he has really made a difference! In David's eyes, everyone should give more care and kindness to the people around them.

I'm writing to tell you about my growing pains and gains. As a Grade Eight student, I have many worries, but I also get a lot from solving them. My biggest pain is the pressure from exams. I often worry that I can't get good grades and let my parents down. On Saturday morning, I got up at 8:00 a.m. After breakfast, I studied for two hours. It was really tiring, and I felt upset.

In the afternoon, I went to the park with my best friend, Lily. I told her about my worry. She listened to me and encouraged me to face it bravely. She said growing pains are normal and they can help us make progress. On Sunday morning, I talked to my mom about my pressure. She told me that the process of trying is more important than the result. With their help, I learned to adjust myself. I felt relaxed and confident again—that's my biggest gain. In the evening, I read a book about teenagers' growing stories and then went to bed at 9:30 p.m.

When I was a child, my mum always wanted me to take up a hobby. In fact, I was not interested in her 1 at all. So when she took me to a music teacher's house for the first 2 lesson, I was crying all the way.

Mr Jones, the piano teacher, was a 3 piano teacher. When he saw the sadness on my face, he played a piece of music to calm me down. I fell in love with the beautiful music and stopped 4 soon. All my sadness was gone, so I 5 to take piano lessons with him.

However, it was not 6 for a child at my age to learn the piano. I had a hard time sitting at the piano and 7 for a few hours every day. Luckily, Mr Jones taught me 8 and often encouraged me, so I made great progress. A few months later, I could enjoy the 9 coming from my fingers.

Floods are becoming more common, and it's a big problem for the whole world. As cities get larger and more land is covered with concrete (混凝土), less water can be taken into the ground. If the rain is too heavy and the sewage systems (排水系统) can not hold all the water, floods may happen easily. 

In 2013, Chinese designer Yu Kongjian came up with the idea of "sponge cities". These cities are designed to work like a sponge. They can take in water like a sponge and help reduce the sudden floods. 

In 2015, China started a national plan. The government chose some cities as "Sponge City" pilots (试点). Wuhan is one of them. In the city, water can pass through the road. There are also gardens, ponds and wetlands all over the city. When it rains, they can take in water quickly. This has helped reduce floods there. 

Other cities around the world are also trying similar ideas. Auckland in New Zealand has built green parks along rivers. These parks can take in extra (额外的) water during heavy rain. Amsterdam in the Netherlands collects rainwater by using "green roofs" on buildings. These roofs, with grass and small plants, can not only take in rainwater, but also store and clean the water for daily use with the help of smart systems. 

Yu Kongjian said building sponge cities is like doing Tai Chi. It means working with nature, not against it. China and other countries are putting this idea into practice by connecting nature with modern technology (技术).

In the shallow waters of the Pacific Ocean lie coral reefs coloured by some algae (海藻) that live with corals. Corals usually provide nitrogen (氮) to algae, and in return they get carbon (碳), which gives them energy.

In the early 1980s, a huge heat wave turned more than 90 per cent of these corals a pale and lifeless white. And it was believed that about 50 per cent of reefs with beautiful corals might disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed up the same area of the Pacific waters in the late 1990s and again in 2015—2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn't influence the reefs as badly as the first. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt (适应).

Unlike fish, adult corals cannot move to cooler waters. But corals are able to adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with  heat. Others can use rows of tiny hairs on their bodies to "fan" away too much harmful oxygen (O₂) let out by stressed-out algae. Certain baby corals change their own metabolism (新陈代谢) in order to fight the warming waters. But all these adaptations can protect themselves only to some degree.

After studying and understanding these adaptations, scientists are trying to find ways to help corals fight. If researchers can make corals accept algae that can deal with heat pressure or if they energize genes (基因) that can deal with heat pressure, it will increase the corals' chance of living through future ocean heat waves.

"When I go down to the sea and see a beautiful healthy reef with these colourful corals, I feel the pleasure of being in this underwater world," a famous biologist says. "It will be really sad to see it dead. But that does drive you to want to use your skills and love to help fight."

Wucheng: A Winter Home for Birds and People

Every winter, a small town near Poyang Lake becomes the world's busiest "bird airport". Over 600,000 birds arrive in Wucheng, Jiangxi. Among them, there are about 4,000 white cranes (白鹤)—that is almost 98% of their world's population.

To protect these important visitors, Wucheng built special safe zones. Nearly 1,600 white cranes gather (聚集) at Dahu Pond. Nearby at Changhu Pond, about 30,000 ducks swim and dive for food. These amazing sights attract thousands of birdwatchers, who use cameras and telescopes (望远镜) to discover wildlife. One of the birdwatchers, Lin Yue, said, "After the trip, I realized how closely connected we are with nature here."

In fact, things were totally different here ten years ago. Local fishermen used to catch birds and fish. Now, many have become protectors. Zhang Haiping, for example, runs a popular hotel and farms rice in Wucheng. In autumn, he always leaves part of his rice for the hungry birds. As bird numbers rose, so did tourism. Thanks to the bird tourism, Zhang makes ten times more money than before.

Wucheng's story shows a powerful truth: protecting nature not only saves wildlife, but also feeds local communities.
