How to Plan a Movie Night

Organizing a movie night with friends or family is a wonderful experience. Would you like to have one? 

Pick a date.

Firstly, it's important to choose the right time if you want a good activity.  There is no need to worry about staying up too late. Once you set a date and time, invite your loved ones to join you.

Pick a movie.

You can check out the movies online.  If you want your friends to help you decide, you'd better give then three movie choices and ask them to choose when everyone arrives.

Most kids love to eat popcorn. So place one large bowl of popcorn on a table with some smaller bowls of treats like chocolate, chips and candies. And then prepare some juice or milk at home.

Get the room ready.

If you invite many people to spend the movie night with you, you can add more chairs to your TV area.  Or, with your parent's help, put sofa or air mattresses (床垫) on the floor to make the space more comfortable.

Minor Cold, the 23rd of 24 solar terms (节气), falls on January 5th this year. During this solar term, the leaves fall from the trees and roofs (屋顶) of the house is always covered with snow in the north of China. The farm work comes to an end, so the farmers stop to enjoy the spare time of the year.

Minor Cold is the coldest time of the year. However, the cold can't stop people from enjoying their lives. There are many interesting activities for people to do. In China, wintersweet (腊梅) comes out at that time. People often go to places where they can take in the beauty of wintersweet together with friends. It's also a good time for people to skate, fight with snowballs and build snowmen.

Among all these activities, the most important one is preparing for the Spring Festival. Some people make decorations like paper-cuts and couplets on their own. Others begin to store new year goods. During the Minor Cold, the so-called "new year taste" is around every corner of the street.

The Minor Cold day is also known as a great day to nourish (滋补). In some parts of China, people like to have mutton hot pot on that day, because they believe that eating mutton ean keep themselves warm the whole winter. Different places have different ways to celebrate the day. In Guangzhou, it is traditional to eat glutinous-rice (糯米) in the morning.

No matter where you are in China, and no matter what you do on the Minor Cold day, the special day shares the same wish—spending the coldest day in the warmest way.

Chinese food culture is rich and each dish has its own interesting story.

Some dishes were the emperors' favorites. For example, Yangrou Paomo, a traditional Shaanxi dish, enjoyed great popularity thanks to Emperor Zhao Kuangyin. When he was poor and hungry in Chang'an, a kind cook gave him some hot mutton soup: Zhao broke his hard bread into small pieces, added them to the soup and ate it all. It was simple to make but tasted delicious, and he fell in love with it! Later, when he became an emperor, Zhao came back to enjoy it again and made the dish famous.

People also named some dishes after the ones who created them. Mapo tofu is a good example. A long time ago, a woman in Sichuan cooked delicious tofu, making it hot and tender (嫩的). People loved her tofu. Because she had freckles (斑点) on her face, they called her—Mapo. Her tofu became famous as Mapo tofu. Now people all over the world love it.

Some dishes are connected to great people. Sanyuan Tibang from Hubei got its name during the Ming Dynasty (朝代) when three Number One Scholars (状元) stopped at a small restaurant and tried a special pork dish. It looked nice and tasted a bit sweet, and they liked it so much. People started to call it Sanyuan Tibang.

There are many more food stories in China. When we travel, we can enjoy both the food and its story. This makes eating even more fun!

In my life, I once faced some difficulties that made me upset. Luckily, I tried my best to work them out. Let me share my experience with you.

One sunny morning, a young boy named Daniel was walking through a forest when he noticed a small, struggling butterfly trying to break free from its cocoon (茧). Curious, Daniel stopped to watch. The butterfly was pushing hard, but it seemed stuck (被卡住). Feeling sorry for the little creature (生物), Daniel decided to help. He gently tore (撕开) open the cocoon, and the butterfly came out easily. However, something was wrong. The butterfly's wings were shriveled (皱缩的) and weak. So it couldn't fly. Daniel didn't understand what had happened. 

An old man passing by saw the scene and explained, "The struggle to break free from the cocoon is what gives the butterfly the strength to fly. By helping it, you took away its chance to grow strong." Daniel realized his mistake. He had wanted to help, but his actions had actually harmed the butterfly. He knew that challenges and struggles are necessary for growth. Sometimes, what seems like a kind act can prevent someone from developing the strength they need to succeed in life. 

As you grow older, you'll be faced with some challenging decisions—like whether to cut class or try cigarettes. Making decisions on your own is hard enough, but when other people take part in and try to press you one way or another, it can be even harder. People who are your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it's called peer pressure. 

Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system(太阳系). Maybe you got others excited about your new favourite book, and now everyone is reading it. These are examples of how peers positively influence each other. 

Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them. Your soccer friend might try to convince (劝说) you to be mean to another player and never pass him the ball. 

It is tough to be the only one who says "no" to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do. 

You've probably had a parent or a teacher advising you to "choose your friends wisely". Peer pressure is a big reason why they say this. If you choose friends who don't cut class, smoke cigarettes, or lie to their parents, then you probably won't do these things either, even if other kids do. 

If you continue to face peer pressure and you're finding it difficult to deal with, talk to someone you trust. Don't feel guilty（内疚的）if you've made a mistake or two. 

My friend, Robert, has a twin sister named Amanda. Though they get along well, there are some things about Amanda and her friends that puzzle (困惑) him. He can't understand how girls can talk for long. For example, sometimes when he leaves home to play football, Amanda and her friend, Sharon, are sitting on the sofa, talking. When he comes back three hours later, they're still sitting there, going on with the same topic. 

Boys and girls have different attitudes towards friendship. Friendships between girls are usually about sharing feelings and support, but boys prefer to share activities or interests. A boy seems to be more careful about sharing his feelings with his friends. A girl's closest friend, however, might always be about to tell her about something that has happened in her life. 

Many studies show that girls have more friendships than boys. In fact, many teenage boys cannot name a single best friend. When asked, they hesitate before answering, "My best friend? Er, I don't think about that, and I have so many different friends that it is hard to choose just one best friend." Girls who have been asked can usually answer the question without thinking, "A best friend? Of course. We have a lot to share with each other and do a lot of things together." 

We have to realize: boys share activities, while girls share feelings more. But the most important thing to remember is that both of them need friendship. 

It's not easy growing up. Growing up can be a real "pain" for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren't allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel sad, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don't understand why we can't stay young forever. But we should take a look back on all the painful things in life with a positive attitude (态度) and we should learn from them. We should realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains! 

Throughout our lives we are going to face many challenges and pains, but we should never let these difficulties keep us from following our dreams. We must overcome them one small step at a time. 

As a young girl, my parents asked me to do so many things that I didn't like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music and I also hated them. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I now understand that my parents and teachers wanted me to have a better life. 

We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just part of our life. Think about how we would feel if we had no challenges and lived a life like that. Life would be really boring and meaningless. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (碰撞) on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

Mike was unhappy in class these days. One of his teachers noticed this. He called Mike out and asked, "I often see you sitting alone. What's the matter?" 

Mike said, "I lost the football match and did badly in one exam. Every time I think of them, I feel upset." After hearing this, the teacher asked Mike to come to his house on the weekend. 

When Mike got to the teacher's house, the teacher welcomed him and asked, "Would you like to drink a cup of lemon water?" Mike answered, "Yes, please." The teacher brought a cup of lemon water to him. As soon as Mike drank it, he made a strange face. Seeing this, the teacher asked, "Don't you like it?" 

Mike said, "There is too much salt in it." 

The teacher said, "Oh, no problem. I will throw it away and make a new one." 

As the teacher was going to pick up the cup, Mike stopped him and said, "Sir, there is no need to throw it away. If we add some sugar to it, it will be fine." 

"Good. Now think about this. Too much salt in lemon water is like the bad experience we have in life. To enhance the taste, we don't need to throw it away. Instead, we add sugar. Similarly, we cannot control the happening of terrible things in our life. But we can make our life better by adding something good," the teacher said. Mike finally understood what he should do. 

Between us now, a thin, weak bridge, made of words we hardly say.

When we asked about brothers and sisters, more than 200 children wrote to us to share their stories.
