Have you ever been to Japan? Everyone says Japan's culture is different from that of other parts of the world, but I didn't believe it. 

However, on my first day in Tokyo, I knew everything I had heard about Japan was true. I remember arriving at the airport in Tokyo and having to take the train into the city. I wasn't sure how and where to take the train, so I walked up to a man in uniform and asked, "" 

To my surprise, he could not speak English.  When he saw my confused (困惑的) face, he smiled and bowed (鞠躬). I felt very strange at the time. How could people in such a modern country not speak English?

Finally, I found someone who helped me buy a ticket for a train. When I went over to the timetable, I found out the train wouldn't arrive in 5 minutes. In my head, 5 minutes was like at least 10 minutes.  Are trains always on time in your country? When I got on the train, I found nobody talked.  Later I knew it is rude to talk on the train in Japan. 

Living in China, I often see elderly people doing many fun activities. They practice tai chi, sing opera, dance, and even play with swords. These activities are usually done outside and help them stay active and social. I think this is great and wish it would happen in the UK more often. 

My grandma lives in a nursing home in England. She plays bingo (宾果游戏) and sometimes listens to music, but she rarely goes outside or spends time with others. This situation is usual for many of the UK's elderly, as there isn't a strong community that helps them stay socially active. There's knitting (编织) and theater, but not much dancing in the parks or opera singing. Such outdoor group activities are just not part of the culture, and I think that's a pity.

In China, elderly people stay active and social, which is good for their health. It's also very cheap. A professor (教授) from the University of Chicago said that dancing in parks became popular in China in the 1990s. It helped women stay healthy and make friends, which is important for fighting loneliness in old age. 

In the UK, many elderly people feel lonely. They don't have many social activities, and this makes them feel isolated (孤独的). I hope the UK and other Western countries can learn from China. I want to see elderly people in the UK enjoying their later years, staying active, and being part of a healthy community. 

Boris, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).

In recent years, community volunteer services in Zhunge'er Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have been developing well. In Baiyun Community, the "Xingfuli Shared Station" has become a popular place for sharing. It provides various kinds of items for people to borrow. There are over 200 kinds of tools, toys, books and even some children's performance costumes. People living there can borrow these things simply by signing up. 

The "Cultural Station" in the community also plays an important role. It offers art courses such as piano and flute (长笛) lessons for the elderly and children. There are activity rooms where people can gather and have fun. 

In Tiebei Community, the "Shared Grandmas" volunteer service team is making a big difference. These grandmas contribute a lot to the community. They take care of children and they also help with some housework for the elderly who live alone. Cui Lei is one of them. One time, when her water pipe (管子) broke at night, neighbors and community workers came to help her immediately. This made her decide to give back to the community, so she joined the team. 

These volunteer services have made the community a better place to live in. People help each other and enjoy a better life.
