When my son was 11 years old, he got a small job helping out with a traveling carnival (嘉年华) in our town. He didn't come home at lunch time, phoning instead to tell me he was fine and had found a few days' work helping out at a show. He turned up for supper as usual however after he finished work. 

I asked him how he had managed at lunch and he told me he had made some new friends at the carnival, some young men who were twin brothers, and their mom and dad. They had paid him a few dollars and invited him for lunch in return for helping them set up their show and wanted him to return the next day to help with other chores. 

I was glad he had found new friends but a little worried about the type of people who might be traveling in a carnival. "Oh, Mom, these are just normal everyday people like anyone else. They just work at a carnival instead of in a store or something". "Come down tomorrow and meet them yourself, " he said.

One thing that's important when you're backpacking is to make sure you carry only basic needs, so your backpack isn't too heavy. I travel "light" these days. One good tip someone gave me is to take old clothes and just throw them away when you move on, instead of washing and waiting for things to dry. Many hotels don't provide shampoo and shower gel. You can get mini bottles in supermarkets. 

I've discovered that many backpackers visit places that other tourists don't go to, and by using local shops and guest houses, they help those

places with much-needed financial (经济上的）support. Most small guest houses allow you to stay for unlimited time, so you can spend as long as you like exploring the local area. Backpackers are also kinder to the environment, because they use trains and buses rather than cars. So, what are you waiting for?

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活) an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people's mood (情绪). But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways. 

Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around you may be smiling, too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. Itcan also make ourselves feel good. So why not set off that chain (链条)of good feelings to people around?

Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kid acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help_ you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world. 

In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone's spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you're getting cakes a lot more days than providing them. 

The story doesn't end here. Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you're in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn't it?

Bridging West and East

As is known to us, the geography of Turkey（土耳其）is really interesting! The  （东方） part of the country lies in Asia. But the waterway called the western section, on the other side of the Dardanelles Strait, leads into  （欧洲）. In  （三月）of 2022, a new bridge was  （完成）in Turkey, after taking five years to create. It reaches across the long waterway and has set a record as the longest of its kind in the world. 

This bridge in Turkey makes it convenient for cars to arrive at the other side. It  （花 费） just six minutes, compared to an hour's boat ride in the  （过去）。

This new  （建筑）is called the 1915 Canakkale Bridge. It was created by companies from Turkey and South Korea working  （一起）. It is a symbol of a new period of peace  （介于……之间）the West and East. This bridge should also be good for the environment, for  （更少）oil or gas will be needed to cross the Dardanelles Strait than ever. 

Many young people have trouble communicating  their parents. However, there are some very useful tips for helping solve this problem. 

Firstly, make a list of the things you and your parents disagree about most. With each of these things, try to find an answer acceptable to both you and your parents. It is no good for you to  everything to go your way. You have to be ready to change a little if you want them to change. 

Secondly, talk to your parents when it is convenient for them. Remember that your parents may have to work many  and this can make them tired, so be  with them. 

Thirdly, listen to what your parents have to say. How can you expect them to listen to you if you are not ready to listen to them?  , your parents were once young like you, so they understand your situation better than you expect. 

Lastly, if you do not get a satisfactory result, try not to get too angry. Talk with your parents and find out their reasons. Part of growing up is learning to live with these kinds of disagreements, and learning to understand another person's way of looking at things.

Kathy: 

Many people think it's unacceptable to wear a fur coat, so why is it OK to wear a leather one? It's still made from an animal. Most of the leather we use is from cows, and cows give off gases that make the Earth hotter. Making leather also makes the air and water dirty. We don't need to use leather anymore.  We can use these instead. 

John: Leather is still a good choice.

Many people around the world eat meat, so it makes sense to use those animal skins for leather instead of letting them go to waste.  Fake leather（人造皮革）is often made from plastic, which does not break down and can make pollution worse. It also doesn't last as long, so we may need to buy new things more often.

Many people believe that a child's creativity can only be produced in the warmth of a loving family. However, a study showed that this is not always true. 

Although it sounds impossible, the study has found that many creative people had difficult childhoods. In fact, many well-known artists developed their special talents because of their difficult childhood experiences. They always used art as a way to stay away from pain（痛苦）, creating imaginary worlds so they had more freedom to express themselves. Famous examples include artists like Vincent van Gogh and Franz Hemka. 

Experts explain that there are two main ways creativity develops. One is the positive inspiration. When children have caring parents, they learn from this positive action and grow confidently. The other is coping creativity. When children feel no one cares about them, they might use drawing, writing, or music to comfort themselves. 

Interestingly, challenges can actually increase creativity, but not enough caring contributes to worries. Research shows early childhood experiences shape creativity patterns and that some challenge helps shape creativity, but too much challenge is bad for people's social skills. 

Modern life creates new challenges. With parents working longer hours and greater competition in learning, many children spend more time alone indoors. This leads to problems such as worries and poor social skills. To solve these problems, schools can help by offering art and music programs, training teachers to notice creative students and providing advice for children with problems. 

The most important lesson is balance. While challenges can produce creativity, love and support are more important. As one expert says, "Creativity grows best when children feel safe enough to discover but supported enough to take challenges, "Parents and teachers should encourage children's talents while making sure they feel understood. 

A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he or she is pleased with a grade on a test. Or a person might smile if a friend told a funny joke. People smile for many different reasons. But smiles are more than just a way for people to show that they are happy. There are other good reasons to smile often. 

First, it is easier to smile than to show unhappiness. In fact, it only takes 17 muscles (肌肉) to smile. On the other hand, it takes 43 muscles to show unhappiness. So give the muscles in your face a rest and smile

Second, smiles are nice. People may try to look nice on the outside by exercising or wearing nice clothes. However, there is a famous saying: a smile is the best thing a person can wear. That is because it is easy to be around someone who is smiling and happy. Almost no one wants to be around someone who is unhappy all the time. 

Third, smiles are helpful. Both smiling and laughing can quickly spread from one person to another. If one person smiles, people around him or her want to smile, too. Similarly, when a person laughs, people tend to laugh with them. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is to share a smile or laugh. It is the easiest and cheapest way to cheer someone up. 

Finally, smiling and laughing are very good for the body. Even if you are mad or sad, try smiling. You' ll find that it will be hard to stay mad or sad for very long.
