When plastic was first made around 1870, people thought it was amazing and called it an "environmental hero"! It was light, long-lasting and cheap. It quickly replaced (取代) wood and other natural materials. Not surprisingly, plastic has now filled our lives, too. We can find it in bags, toothbrushe s,mobile phones, houses... It certainly has thousands of uses. 

But slowly and silently, plastic has shown its dark side. Plastic waste has become a danger to sea animals. Some animals like whales eat it by mistake and die. The "hero" of the past now kills over 100,000 sea animals each year. By 2050, there could be even more plastic in the sea than fish. 

Plastic also causes problems on land. Birds 'wings get tied in plastic lines. Bears' heads get stuck in plastic bins. Even humans are eating plast icwaste! On average, we eat five grams of plastic a week. That 'sa whole bank card! Tiny pieces of plastic are found in the air. There is even plastic "snow" at the South and North Poles ( 南北极). Nowhere is safe from plastic. 

Moreover, getting free of plastic waste isn't easy. It may take thousands of years to break down. So hiding the waste in the ground doesn't help. Burning it also produces thick smoke and causes air pollution. 

Plastic is not just causing an environmental problem. It means life and death for humans and for the future of the Earth. Everyone knows the reis only one Earth. So let's live without plastic!

Marco and Kim walked past the city's recycling centre. They waved at the manager, Mr. Morse, whose job was to1 the plastic, paper and other items into different bags.

Better Community, Better Life

A good community is like a big family. What can we do to builda better community? I'd like to share some ideas.

Kristen Tapping, a student from London South Bank University, has invented a bike wheel that can help clean the air. It's called Rolloe. 

The wheel uses fins (尾翼) to pull in air as it turns. It then uses filters (过滤器) to take in polluted air and give off clean air back into the environment. The wheel can filter more air if it goes faster, although it still worksa t low speeds. 

Tapping said users would need to change the filter every week or after about 250 kilometers, to make sure the wheel continues to work well. The wheel fits in the front of a standard (标准的) bike and weighs about one kilogram. 

Tapping said she was encouraged to create the wheel when she was biking around London. "In traffic, you always notice the pollution, the heat, the gas esand the smell," she said. She predicts that if 10 percent of the riders in London had a Rolloe on their bike, they could filter about 266,8 65m³ of air a day, although thi s has yet to be tested. 

A recent report shows that London's health costs—because of air pollution— are the highest among all the European cities. The World Healt hOrganization (WHO) has also said that outdoor air pollution causes about 4.2 million deaths around the world each year. 

Tapping wants to use the wheel on shared bike projects at first, with the aim of making the wheels available for all bikes to use. She says she would also like to create wheels that would fit in the back of bikes and make them available in different sizes. 

Yang Xiaodong is a doctor at People's Hospital in Heshun, Shanxi Province. Different from a common doctor, Yang saves not only humans, but also wild animals. In the past twenty years, he  (spend) most of his money saving wild animals. 

Now Yang is  (worry) about an eagle owl. He saved it about one year ago. When he first saw the bird, one of  (it) eyes was blind and the other was seriously hurt. Yang saved it and looked after it  (careful). Two months later, the bird got well.  Yang let it fly away. But since then, Yang hasn't seen it. He isn't sure whether it is able to survive in nature. Yang also saves wild animals from farmers. He tries (make) them understand that people shouldn't keep wild animals as pets. It has become  important part of his life to save wild animals. 

Yang even finds ways to stop poachers (偷猎者). Wild animals  (kill) by poachers in different ways. That's why he has led some helpers to walk around the mountains at night and during holidays. Liu Zhibo is one of the  (volunteer). He caught two poachers last year. "Thanks to all the people, we now often see wild animals at night throu ghour cameras. If everyone takes part in saving the wild animals, there  (be) more wild animals in the future," Yang said.
