Today, more and more people want to give back to their communities through volunteering.  Whether you have a few hours a week or just a few days a month, your time can make a difference. 

Helping the elderly

As people age, everyday tasks can become challenging. Many elderly individuals live alone and struggle with shopping, cleaning, or even getting to doctor's appointments.  You can offer to do their grocery shopping, clean their homes, or simply sit and chat with them. Your company can brighten their day. 

Helping the disabled

People with disabilities often face barriers that make daily life difficult.  If you have a skill like painting or playing music, you can share it with them. Even small acts of kindness can mean a lot. 

Helping during holidays

Holidays can be a difficult time for those who are alone or struggling.  You can volunteer at a soup kitchen, deliver meals to families in need, or organize a gift drive for children.  Every effort counts.

Do you want to know about the secrets of the natural world and its great creatures? Do you dream of spending your time learning something special? Nature Seekers has prepared a wonderful 3-day autumn program just for you. Well, here you can do a lot of fun activities and see amazing animals like tall giraffes, sneaky foxes and huge eagles. It's going to be so exciting!

This program is for students who are between 10 and 18 years old. There are two periods for you to choose from. And each period needs at most 20 students. ▶Period 1:

As Hurricane Dorian made many people in South Carolina leave their homes in early September, a six-year-old boy decided that he wanted to help. 

Bell spent two years saving about $100 so that he could spend his seventh birthday at Disney World with his family. But while staying with his grandmother in South Carolina, he decided to spend the money on water, potato chips and hot dogs for the survivors (幸存者) of the hurricane. 

With the help of his grandmother, Bell set up a table next to a busy road and gave out free food to over 100 people. "When people were hungry, I wanted them to have something to consume, " Bell said. "I am very proud of him, " his grandmother said in an interview. "We knew Bell was very special, but we didn't know he was special in this way. " But Bell said, "I just wanted to be generous (慷慨的). "

On September 8, Bell's seventh birthday, Mickey Mouse and Disney World workers visited his home in Florida to give him a Lion King cake, stuffed (填充的) toys, Mickey Mouse balloons, and a VIP trip to Disney World. 

Bell said he was excited to see the lions at Disney's "Animal Kingdom", because The Lion King was his favourite Disney movie. "Be strong, and if you do something good, good will come back to you, " he said. 

Reading is a common activity in our daily life, but do you know how it affects our brains? Many studies have shown that reading can bring great benefits to our brain development. 

When we read, our brains are actively working. We need to understand the words, sentences and the main idea of the text. This process can improve our memory and concentration. People who read regularly often have better memories than those who don't. They can remember things more easily and for a longer time. 

Reading also helps to improve our language skills. It enriches our vocabulary and teaches us how to use words correctly. By reading different kinds of texts, we can learn new sentence structures and writing styles. This is very helpful for our own writing and speaking. 

In addition, reading can reduce stress and make us feel relaxed. When we are deeply absorbed in a good book, we will forget all our worries and troubles. It is a good way to relax after a long day of study or work. Reading can also broaden our horizons and help us learn about different cultures, histories and lifestyles. 

It is never too late to start reading. No matter how old you are, you can benefit from reading. You can choose books that you are interested in, and read for a few minutes every day. Over time, you will find that your brain becomes more active and your life becomes more colorful.

Welcome to our school library! To make sure everyone has a good reading experience, we have some rules for you to follow. Please read them carefully and follow them strictly. 

First, you can borrow up to 3 books at a time. Each book can be kept for 14 days. If you need to keep the book longer, please come to the library to renew it. You can renew it once for another 7 days. 

Second, please keep the books clean and tidy. Do not write or draw on the pages, and do not tear the pages. If you damage a book, you need to pay for it or replace it with a new one. 

Third, the library is a quiet place for reading. Please do not talk loudly or make noise. You can use your mobile phone, but please keep it on silent mode. 

Fourth, food and drinks are not allowed in the library. Please take them out before entering. 

Finally, please return the books on time. If you return them late, you will be fined 0.5 yuan per day. 

Our library has a lot of books for you to choose from, including novels, storybooks, science books and English books. We hope you can enjoy reading here and gain more knowledge. If you have any questions, please ask the librarian for help. Thank you!

The School Library

My grandma loves reading and has a small but warm bookshelf in her room. Every time I visit her, I always sit with her and read together. Last month, she gave me a book about friendship, which is her favorite 1 . She told me that the book brought her much joy when she was young. 

I started reading the book on my way home. The story is about a girl and her dog. They lived in a quiet village and always helped each other. One day, the dog got lost, and the girl felt very 2 . She looked for it everywhere, even in the deep forest. With the help of the villagers, she finally found her dog on a cold morning. The girl was so happy that she cried, and the dog kept 3 her hand gently.

The Spring Festival Gala always brings us surprises. In the past two years, robots  (become) the stars of the show, impressing millions of viewers across the country.

Quordle is a harder word game. It was made by a developer Freddie Meyer from England for players who want more challenges.  Now, thousands of word game fans try Quordle every day to test their skills.

After discussing Wordle's success with his daughter, London-based data scientist Richard Man created Nerdle for maths lovers.  Does it sound familiar? Right. Teachers say that Nerdle, like Wordle, also requires players to use logic.

Worldle should not be confused with Wordle.  French developer Antoine Teuf designed Worldle. Players have six tries daily to name a country. Its page can sometimes receive two million daily visits.

 It was created by a developer Glenn Angelo from Sweden for music lovers. Players have six tries to guess the name of a song. Now, millions of music fans play it every day to test how well they know popular music.

Language experts now find that old Chinese poems and old Western poems have many surprising similarities. People did not notice these points for hundreds of years. Literature researchers study old writings from different cultures. They are very happy about this finding.

These same ideas appear in works written over one thousand years apart. Those poets never knew each other at all. A research team on old literature recently shared their study. They talked about these same topics and feelings in old poems.

The team said they were comparing old texts for a translation work. Then they found these same expressions. Other researchers said the poems seemed to have quite different styles at first. But careful comparison made the links clear. For example, a Tang Dynasty poem talks about time passing quickly. It uses pictures of falling flowers and running rivers. A Roman poet from the same time wrote about time as a river. The river carries all things away. Both poets used nature to show a common feeling. People fear losing valuable things.

Researchers are now collecting more examples. They want to find the real reason for these similarities. They think these points come from common human experiences. Poets from all cultures naturally write about these experiences. Besides the same ideas, the poems keep their own cultural styles. Chinese poets often use quiet and indirect words to show feelings. Western poets of the same time liked more direct and strong words.

This cross-cultural literature work started in 2018. It is now studying over 800 old poems. These poems come from Chinese and European traditions. People wrote these works in times when cultures had little or no direct contact. Researchers say these hidden links may change how people understand world literature history. Future studies can explore how these same themes show common ideas about life and the world.

The US state of Michigan is often called the "Car Capital of the World". Many famous car companies, such as Ford and General Motors, were born there. But off the state's northern coast in Lake Huron (休伦湖) lies an unusual island, Mackinac. This 3.8-square-kilometre island, where cars are not allowed, stands out because there is not a single car.

But why are there no cars? According to Morse, a local store owner, it's because the horse is king here. In 1898, a car made a sudden loud noise after an engine problem. The sound frightened the nearby horses and village officials decided to ban (禁止) cars. The rest of the island later followed this rule.

Today, more than a century later, horses do everything, like collecting garbage and delivering mail, on Mackinac Island. About 30 horses live on the island all year round. "That's what our lives have been like," said Morse. "We like the tradition of getting around on foot, by bike or by horse."

In April, before the busy tourist season, another 600 horses are brought to the island to help keep things running. In just a few weeks, about 1.2 million people arrive by ferry (渡轮). They shop for tasty candy, explore beautiful country roads, and enjoy the clip-clop sounds of a simpler time. When autumn arrives, the extra horses head back to the mainland. Winter on Mackinac can be hard. The island is often cut off from the mainland as the surrounding lakes freeze over. But once spring returns, Mackinac comes alive again. The trees begin to flower. The extra horses come back, along with the tourists.

Why not spread your wings and visit Mackinac?

Recently, on a busy street in Shenzhen, a new traffic robot started its work. It uses AI to help direct traffic. This is a big step forward for the city's traffic. The robot looks like a real police officer and stands at a crossing in Longgang District. It wears a police uniform. From far away, it looks very much like a real person. But up close, you can see its cool, metallic body. It has become a small star in the area, and people often stop to take photos of it.

The robot can manage traffic by itself without help from human police. It has a smart AI system to "see" things. It moves in the same way and at the same time as the traffic lights. When the light turns green, it makes a gesture for cars to go and reminds drivers to follow the rules. The robot can also find traffic problems, such as e-bike riders not wearing helmets (头盔). When it finds a problem, it makes a sound and uses hand gestures to ask people to correct it.

Local police say this robot is a good example of how Shenzhen is making traffic smarter. By doing simple tasks, it lessens the workload for human police. This way, police officers can spend more time on other important jobs. In the future, the government plans to use more robots. They may help check for drunk driving and record traffic problems. With these smart helpers, Shenzhen's traffic will become safer and better for everyone.

I had many adventures as a child, but one stands out on the local football playground.

One day, when we had a tight (势均力敌的) competition with another team, our goalkeeper got hurt. We needed someone to take his place. But no one else volunteered. As the leader of the team, I had to1 , though I had never tried the position before. I felt uncomfortable in the2 position. Soon, a player from the other team broke through and I dived to 3 his shot. His shoes hit me right in the face. The cut was 4 and blood was everywhere. The match had to be stopped, and the school nurse gave me a simple bandage.

Food is an important part of culture. It can also help people from different countries understand each other better.

For over 150 years, Chinese food(become) part of American dining. People usually know Chinese food through (dish) like fried rice and sweet-and-sour chicken. Today, Zhao Yong, the co-founder and CEO of Junzi Kitchen, wants to let Americans try real Chinese home-style food offering a modern fast-casual way.

Procrastination (拖延症) is the habit of delaying tasks.  Many people put off important work not because they don't care, but because they feel worried, unsure, or stressed.

Why Do We Procrastinate?

 Sometimes, the wish to do everything perfectly is so strong that it stops us. If we can't do something very well, we may not do it at all. Students often do this when they have big projects or exams to prepare for.

The Cost of Delaying

People who procrastinate often have to hurry to finish work before the deadline, giving up sleep or work quality.  As time goes by, unfinished work builds up and makes them more worried. This starts a cycle of shame and more delays. Work that could be done easily becomes a hard fight. It hurts their confidence and makes the bad habit even harder to get rid of.

How to Break the Cycle

 Set clear goals, cut big tasks into small parts, and start with the easiest thing—even just opening a notebook or writing one sentence. Making progress, not being perfect, is the key. Beating procrastination does not mean stopping laziness completely. It means learning to manage time and feelings well to live a better life.
