The Dead Sea is in the Jordan rift Valley, southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometres long. At its widest point, it is 15 kilometres wide. It sits about 430 metres below sea level. So, it's the lowest point on Earth's land. 

What's interesting? The Dead Sea isn't really a sea. It's a lake. Its salt concentration (含盐度) is over 30 percent. That's about eight times saltier than common seawater. It's one of the saltiest waters on Earth. 

Why is the Dead Sea so salty? Because it has special natural conditions. Each year, it gets very little rain. Only a small part of fresh water runs in. The hot weather makes the fresh water evaporate (蒸发) quickly. So, the salt concentration becomes higher. For these reasons, it's also called the Salt Sea. 

If you swim in the Dead Sea, you won't see any sea life—no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it hard for them to survive. That's why it's called the Dead Sea. 

But don't be scared Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can't swim, you won't die. The high salt in the Dead Sea lets you float (漂浮) easily. You don't need life jackets. Many people visit the Dead Sea every year. If you walk along the seaside, you'll see people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.

Once, there was a young man who decided to take a trip by train. As time went by, he started feeling bored. To kill time, he took out his travel map and carefully 1 all the stops on his way. One, two, three, four... To his great 2 , there were over 60 small stations. At every station, he quickly ran to the steward (乘务员) and asked the 3 questions, "Why is it taking so long? How far is the next station?"

To make your routine work better, you can follow these rules. First, make a to-do list. Write down what to do every day. Do it as what the list says. But it's not a good idea if your routine is only about work. You also need to do some things to keep healthy. If something new happens and breaks your routine, think about what you need to do first on your to-do list. Last, don't forget that the most important one comes first. 

Wei Bian San Jue (韦编三绝) is a well-known story about Confucius (孔子). Confucius was a famous Chinese thinker a great teacher. He was wise. He loved to learn and always studied hard. 

When he was older, Confucius decided  (read) the I Ching, an old book. Reading it was hard work. The first time he read it, he only understood a little. The second time, he learnt its main ideas. The third time, he  (start) to understand its deeper meaning. He read the I Chingmany times  (careful).

At that time, books were made from bamboo (竹子). People cut bamboo into thin pieces, dried them, and wrote on them. Then they tied (拴) the bamboo pieces together with leather (皮革). As Confucius read  book so many times, he broke the leather several times and had to change it to a new one. Even after (study) hard, he said modestly (谦虚地), "If I could live a few more  (year), I would fully understand the I Ching." 

People praised Confucius his hard work and modesty. Sima Qian, the famous historian (历史学家), wrote this story in  (he) book Records of the Grand Historian. Now, many people know the story, and it  (encourage) them to study as hard as Confucius.

As a large mammal (哺乳动物), the giraffe has quite a small brain. However, a new study shows that giraffes are smarter than we thought. 

Four giraffes at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain took part in some experiments (实验). The scientists showed the animals two transparent (透明的) boxes. Each box was filled with sticks of carrot and zucchini (密生西葫芦).  Giraffes love carrots but are not very interested in zucchinis. 

In the first experiment, the scientists took a vegetable stick from each box.  The giraffes didn't see which vegetables had been picked up. Guess which one they chose? The stick taken from the box with more carrots than zucchinis!

 The giraffes could only see the top part of the boxes. Still, they made the same choice. What does this mean? Well, the giraffes were able to not only choose the box with the most carrots, but also make their decisions based on ratios (根据比例). 

The giraffes used math to make predictions (预测).  Before this study, it had only been seen in animals with bigger brains relative to (相对于) body size. These animals include monkeys, apes (猿类) and a large parrot in New Zealand. 

We all know that exercise is good for us. But we also know that not everybody loves doing it. Just thinking about having to run or swim a long way! That can be enough to make some people want to lie down and give up. However, exercise is not all about doing sport. 

For a start, exercise is not just about the body. Moving our bodies causes our brains to give out (释放) some special chemicals (化学物质) that create a good feeling. Just ten minutes of working out can make us feel happier. Moreover, regular (规律的) exercise helps us feel fresher and get to sleep more easily. Finally, if we connect our exercise with a healthy diet (饮食), we will look healthier and feel more confident about ourselves. 

Start small! If exercise hasn't been part of your life for a long time, there is no need to train for a marathon (马拉松): you will soon give up and go back to your old ways! Just walk or ride bikes around the local park for ten minutes every day. It can help you develop a fitness habit. 

Choose an activity that not only exercises your body, but that you also enjoy. Some people simply go jogging while listening to their favourite music. Others do activities such as dancing or playing basketball with their friends. Make the experience more enjoyable as you work out. That way, you'll never give it up. 

It doesn't matter how much we exercise. Doing regular exercise isn't just about appearance. It's about being healthier and feeling happier. Who wouldn't want that?

Have you ever wondered (想知道) why clouds don't fall, even though they can weigh as much as 100 elephants? Have you ever thought about how something so heavy can float (漂浮) so easily in the sky? Have you ever questioned what clouds are made of and why they stay up there?​

Clouds are truly amazing. They are made of tiny water drops. These drops are so small that they fall very slowly. And the air below pushes them up faster than they fall, so they stay in the cloud. Cloud drops are extremely (极其) small. They're 10, 000 times smaller than raindrops. A cloud drop is only 0. 02 mm, while a hair is 0. 1 mm. When cloud drops get bigger and heavier, they fall as rain. And did you know a falling raindrop doesn't look like a teardrop (泪滴)? It's more like a pancake!​

Clouds can also tell us about the weather. Above 6, 000 m, clouds show up on nice days. Their shapes can tell us which way the wind is blowing high up. We can see them from an airplane window. Between 2, 000－6, 000 m, clouds are thick (厚的) and grey. They can block sunlight so we can't see the sun. And they sometimes bring light rain or snow. Under 2, 000 m, clouds are like cotton (棉花). They change shapes quickly and we often see them on sunny days. Some clouds, like cumulonimbus clouds (积雨云), can grow as high as 12 km. That's taller than Mount Qomolangma! They bring heavy rain and storms. ​

And did you know clouds aren't just on Earth? Other planets, like Neptune (海王星), have clouds too. But the clouds on Neptune are made of gases. Clouds are really amazing, and there's so much to discover about them!

Four princes (王子) heard a story about a wonderful tree—the Red-Bud Tree. They all wished to see it with their own eyes. 

When the oldest prince went to see the tree in the forest, it was still very early in the spring. The tree had no leaves or buds (芽，苞) and was black and bare like a dead tree. He could not understand why it was called a Red-Bud Tree. 

The next son went to see the tree later in the spring. By then, it was covered with red buds. 

When the third son went to the forest later, the tree was covered with only green leaves. He thought it strange that anyone would call it the Red-Bud Tree. 

Finally, it was the youngest prince's turn. By this time, the tree was covered with little bean pods (豆荚). When he came back from the forest, he ran into the garden where his brothers were playing. "I've seen the Red-Bud Tree, " he cried. "So have I, " said the eldest prince. "But the black and bare plant did not look like much of a tree to me. " "What makes you say that?" said the second son. "The tree has hundreds of beautiful red buds. . . " The third prince interrupted (打断) him at once, "Did you say red buds? It has only green leaves. " The youngest prince laughed at his brothers and said, "You're all wrong. I have just seen it. It is not like a dead tree. It has neither red buds nor green leaves on it. It is covered with little bean pods. " 

The king waited until they stopped talking. Then, he said, "My sons, you all saw the same tree. You just each saw it at a different time. "

Last Friday, our class visited the Baoshan Tea Museum in Pengzhou. Opened in 2023, it has become one of the most interesting  (place) in our city.

When we arrived, the guide smiled and told (we), "Let me show you something special about tea!"

On the first floor, there is a Tea History Hall. We (learn) about some Chinese tea culture there. The second floor was surprise to us all. There were over 200 kinds of tea! The guide let us smell some. The green tea smelled (fresh) than the black tea. On the (three) floor, we saw old tea-making tools. Some were much simpler than modern machines. "Farmers used these to dry tea leaves long ago," the guide explained. Some students were (take) photos while others were making notes (careful). After a short video, a worker taught us to make tea. "Move your hands slowly," she taught us patiently. Zhang Tao made the best tea he listened to the worker and learned from her most actively.

In the end, our teacher said, "This visit is as important as a common lesson!" We all thought it was a great trip. The museum not only taught us about Chinese tea but also made us proud  Chinese culture.
