The city of Ordos in North China's InnerMongolia autonomous region has started aremarkable project to address desertification and meet its energy demands. It intends to combine photovoltaic(PV) or solar power generation with sand control in the Kubuqi Desert and the Mu UsSandy Land. This will create the"Solar GreatWall"—a large array of solar power panels. 

The"Solar Great Wall" stretches from Juungar Banner in the east to Hanggin Banner in the west, passing through Dalad Banner. It's about 400 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, aiming to install 100 gigawatt s of solar power capacity. 

This project will make 3 million mu of sandy land useful through solar power and 9 million mu through ecological restoration. It also includes five major energy bases, such as the DaladPV Power Generation Leading Base, the largest single-site solar power park in the country. 

The project uses an innovative method of growing crops below the solar panels while generating electricity above. The Ordos Central-Northern New Energy Base in the KubuqiDesert is another important part of the project, with the first phase completed in 2023 and the second phase scheduled for 2024. 

To support this, Ordos is developing power transmission cables and new energy infrastructure, enhancing the local power grid. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, it plans to build and expand substations. 

The city is also paying attention to making new energy and equipment manufacturing development and sales happen at the same time. The solar power equipment manufacturing industry has made big progress, and high-energy-consuming industries are likely to use a lot of electricity by 2025. 

Ordos is building new platforms for solar panel-based sand control and a national area for showing sustainable development. By 2030, the project is expected to provide 50, 000 jobs, increase per capita income, and boost the ecological industry's output value.

How long can human beings live? Most scientists who study old age think that the human body is 1 to live no longer than 120 years. However, 110 years is probably the longest that anyone could hope to live— if he or she is extremely healthy and lucky. Some scientists even say we can live as long as 130 years! Yet, our cells simply cannot continue to reproduce 2 . They wear out, and as a result, we get old and eventually die. 

Even though we can't live forever, we can live a 3 life than ever before. In 1900, Americans' average lifespan was only 47 years, but today it is 75 years! When does old age begin then? Sixty-five may be out-of-date as the 4 line between middle age and old age. After all, many older people don't begin to experience physical and mental decline until after age 75. 

People are living longer because more people 5 childhood. Before modern medicine changed the laws of nature, many children died of common childhood 6 . Now that the chances of dying young are much lower, the chances of living long are much higher due to better diets and health care. 

On the whole, our population is getting older. The 7 in our population will have lasting effects on our social development and our way of life. Some people fear such changes will be for the worse, while some see 8 , not disaster. Today, many men and women in their" golden years" are healthy, still active and young in 9 . 

As our society grows old, we need the 10 of our older citizens. With long lives ahead of them, they need to stay alive and be devoted.

Family is very important for everyone, no matter where you are from. So in both theEast and the West, people have festivals to celebrate family reunions. These festivals include theMid-Autumn Festival in China and Thanksgiving Day in the US. How are they celebrated and what are the differences? Let's take a look. 

Sharing the moonlight

The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important traditional festival in China after the Spring Festival. It's on the 15th day of the eighth month of Chinese lunar calendar. In ancient China, the day was considered as a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables and grain had been collected from the fields. All the family got together and had a big dinner. They at e a special festival food— mooncakes and enjoyed the full moon. 

On that day, the moon is full. The full moon is a symbol for family reunions which means tuanyuan in Chinese. Now people also celebrate the festival by getting together and having a big dinner. 

When it gets dark, people look up at the full moon, eating mooncakes and missing friends and relatives who are far from home. "We wish each other a long life so as to share the beauty of this graceful moonlight, even though miles apart!" wrote Su Shi, a famous SongDynasty poet. 

Showing thanks

Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest holidays in the US. It's on the fourth Thursday ofNovember. People visit their friends and relatives to remind themselves that they are lucky to have happiness, health and family and also to have a roof over their heads. 

In 1621, about 100 English people took a ship, the Mayflower, and arrived in the northeastern US. The winter there was very cold and life was hard. As the American Indians helped them a lot, the English people asked them to have a big meal with them in order to express their thanks. The celebration lasted for three days. 

Today, people usually have a family meal on Thanksgiving Day. They enjoy delicious food such as pumpkin scones and a big, golden turkey. 

There are other traditions on the day. For example, the turkey has a V-shaped bone in the breast. It's called a wishbone. After roasting, two persons each take one end of the bone. They make a wish and then pull it. If one gets the larger part of the bone, he or she will get good luck.

The most important part of Thanksgiving Day is to say" thanks"— this is the spirit of the holiday. People also like to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV.
