How to Make Friends

Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions.  You won't make friends staying at home alone. 

Join a club or a group. Talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. And it's easier to keep up a conversation if you have something in common. 

Many people are nervous when talking to new people.  And it's human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. But don't forget that most people are friendly to you. Most of them are just as nervous as you are. 

Try to act as if you're self-confident even if you don't feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile. 

 If you see someone you'd like to speak to, say something. Don't wait for the other person to start a conversation. 

Just meeting someone new doesn't mean that you'll make friends with that person. Friendship is based on mutual（相互的）likings and "give and take".

One day, a young man was walking in the desert. The sun was shining brightly overhead, making the sand beneath his feet extremely hot. He had been walking for a long time and felt very thirsty. His throat was dry, and his body was begging for water. 

Just then, as he was struggling to move forward, he suddenly found a spring of delicious and clear water. The water was welling out from the ground, forming a small pool and looking so inviting. It was so cool and sweet for a man who had expected it for such a long time that he quickly bent down and drank a lot in one go. The refreshing water seemed to bring him back to life. After quenching his thirst（解渴）, he thought of his village and his kind teacher who had taught him in middle school. He decided to share this wonderful discovery with his teacher. So he took out his old leather（皮制的）bottle and filled it with the clear water carefully, imagining how happy his teacher would be when receiving this special gift. 

After a four-day journey in the hot sun and through the endless sand dunes, he finally arrived at his village. He rushed to his teacher's house and gave the water to the old man. The old man, with a warm smile, took a deep drink. He then smiled even more warmly and thanked his student sincerely for the sweet water. The young man, seeing his teacher's happy expression, returned to his home with a light and happy heart. 

Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. The student took a drink and spat it out at once, saying it was terrible. In fact, it had gone bad because of the old leather bottle which had influenced the taste of the water. The student was confused and asked his teacher, "Master, the water was bad and it was bitter. Why did you lie to him that you liked it?"

The teacher replied with a kind look in his eyes, "You only tasted the water while I tasted the gift. The water was full of love and kindness from my dear student. In my heart, nothing could be sweeter than this. "

This simple story shows us that sometimes, the value of a gift doesn't lie in its physical quality but in the love and kindness it contains. 

Most people have a favorite color, but how people feel about colors depends on their culture. This can be very important to people in business that sell products all over the world. They might choose a color because they think it is exciting or attractive, but in another country that same color could be used to give a sad message. Look at these examples. 

If you ask someone in Britain what the right color is for a bride（新娘）to wear, the answer will be white. In China and other eastern countries, brides often wear red because the color red is a sign of good luck, happiness and prosperity（繁荣）. They refuse to use other colors. In Britain, red is used as a sign of danger. Road signs and warning labels（标签）are often in red. In eastern cultures, the color red does not man you have to be careful. 

In Egypt, yellow is the color linked to death. In Britain and other western cultures, death and funerals are usually linked to the color black, but in many eastern countries white is the color most people connect with death and funerals. 

Many people like the color orange because it is bright and exciting. Some advertisers will not use orange in their advertisements because they believe it suggests that the products are cheap and perhaps not of good quality. 

In a word, colors have different meanings in different cultures. We should learn to choose the proper color in some special situation. 

For many girls from villages in China, a dream job could be anything except working in a village. But Zhang Guifang, a 24-year-old college graduate, gave up running her business in Tianjin and returned to her village. 

As a young member of the Communist Party of China, she was chosen as the Party secretary of Sanjia village in December, 2021. Although she once had many ways to develop her village, they weren't put into practice because of lacking money. The" rainbow village" idea was accepted because it didn't cost a lot of money. Zhang hoped to bring in many tourists through this project and develop the local economy（经济）。

She spent five months planning the creation of wall paintings of colourful sunflowers, wings and balloons to make the houses and walls of the village beautiful. For the first time, Sanjia has become famous, with pictures of the village spreading quickly on the Internet. 

As a young village head, Zhang's job isn't easy. There are endless things to do, and there are no days off. She often cried at first and once wanted to give up. But she told herself that no matter how hard things were, she would hold on for another month. Slowly, she was approved（认可）by many villagers, which improved her confidence and led her to set bigger goals. 

Zhang hoped that as long as she was there, Sanjia would go in a better direction towards a bright future.

Tennis is a much-loved sport. The 21-year-old girl Zheng Qinwen made a mracIc（奇迹）in Paris, by becoming China's (one) Olympic tennis singles champion.

In today's world, over 4 billion people own a smartphone, charging（充电）our phones has become part of our daily habit——just like（刷）our teeth or getting dressed in the morning.

If you' re charging your phone while you sleep, keep it on a hard, cool （表面）——not under a pillow（枕头）or blanket——to stop it from overheating. （专家）also say you should not use cheap chargers, because they may overheat your phone. It's best to use the charger that comes with the phone.

You probably write the work quite often at school. Your first draft（草稿）might not be your best work.  It's important to read again carefully and correct it. Here are some tips to help you improve your written work.

Create a success list.

You could list the suggestions and give reasons if it's a suggestion letter. If it's creative writing, you can remind yourself of the kinds of punctuation（标点）or writing methods you want to use.

Write everything down and then go back.

When you think of lots of ideas, you should write them down quickly first without paying too much attention to your spelling, punctuation or grammar. Then, once you have written everything down, you can read carefully and decide which parts need to be cut out, added, corrected, changed or improved. 

Get another opinion.

When you write something yourself, you can find it hard to notice mistakes or unreasonable parts. You can ask your classmates or teachers for help. Ask them to give important opinions for improvement and to check if you've made any mistakes in spelling, punctuation or grammar.

Write up your final draft, taking into consideration your list and any changes. Don't stop yourself from redrafting again if you think you need to. But remember to be kind to yourself and not too strict. Where you are happy, you can correct it better.

Meat can be tasty. It is often good for us and it has been part of our meals for long. However, some organizations, like the Soil Association, say meat should not be eaten every day, especially in schools. This is because farming animals for meat can be bad for the environment and lead to climate（气候）change. The Soil Association wants schools to have more plant-based meal choices that do not cause environmental problems. The Government already advises that schools have one no-meat day each week, but not all schools follow this advice. So what do you think?

Everyone needs to do their bit to help the planet, and eating less meat is a good start. Although meat can be healthy and is good for us in the right amounts, eating it every day means a lot of animals have to be farmed. This uses up valuable things such as water and land. The animals themselves add to climate change by producing methane（甲烷）. Besides, it's not necessary to eat meat every day. There are many ways to get the nourishment（营 养） to be healthy. We could eat foods like beans, nuts, potatoes and so on. What's more, eating more plant-based foods will lower the pressure on the problem of being overweight among students.

Students should be able to decide what they eat——it's a personrial choice. Some students, for example. might eat a little bit of meat each day, but less overall. Besides, meat is full of nourishment reeded for growth. If schools don't serve meat, they might choose junk food instead. It's right to tell and educate young people about climate change and the results of the farming industry, but they should be encouraged to change their eating habits rather than being told that they have to. Making people change their habits doesn't aIways mean people can change their minds.

I used to have a motorcycle（摩托车）. One Sunday in summer, my 10-year-old daughter and I went for a ride in the countryside. We took the back roads to a park where the view was fantastic! The wind was strong enough to give more pleasure to riding the motorcycle.

Halfway through the park, the motorcycle was out of gas and stopped working, leaving a woman and her daughter, 20 miles from home, hopeless.

On those days, most gas stations were closed on Sunday. They included the station in the town. My new friend jumped on his motorcycle to search for an open gas station. Before long, he was back with some gas for my motorcycle, and we were on our way again! Without accepting my payment for the gas he'd bought for us, he just rode away.

According to a report in Singapore's The Straits Times, the Singaporean government armounced that, starting from December 30,2022, all drinks sold locally must use nutritional grade labels（营养等级标签）A,B,C, or D on their packaging, marking the percentage of sugar and saturated fat（饱和脂肪）in the drinks. The labels are from A to      D. The more sugar and saturated fat a drink has, the less healthy the drink is. So recently several Singaporean drink companies have already started to put these labels on every drink.
