How long are your breaks between classes? Last September, many primary and middle schools in China started to change (they) class breaks from 10 to 15 minutes. This gives students and teachers more time for outdoor (activity).

Chinese schools used to have 10-minute breaks between classes. However, it was difficult students to go outside and play in the short break time. Some schools even (stop) students from leaving classrooms during breaks for safety reasons.

Education officials found the problem and (final) decided to improve school timetables. In Beijing, schools have taken some time from the lunch break (create) the 15-minute break. It doesn't change the total school hours. The morning arrival and afternoon leaving times for primary schools stay the same. While middle schools finish five minutes (late) than before, according to local education offices.

How to Manage Your Time

Time is super important. Sometimes we don't really think about it, but often we feel there's never enough of it. We sometimes rush through our days, trying to do more in less time. Other times, we get lost in our phones. Often, we feel we can't control the time well. 

Pay attention to how you spend your time.

Track (追踪) your time for a week or two. You'll be surprised at what you find. Once we know where our time is going, we can start to make changes.

Find out what's the most important.

We all have the time we need—we just need to plan it wisely. We choose to spend our time based on what is important to us, but many of us do this without realizing. Then imagine you only have a month left. This will help you make better choices in the future.

Make changes and set limits (界限).

Once we know how we spend our time, and what's the most important, we can start to make changes and set limits. Cut out the unimportant things.  Besides, don't take on new tasks when you're already too busy.

Learn to enjoy the present moment. Enjoy the small things, like a beautiful sunset or a good conversation with friends. Spend time doing things you like, such as reading or listening to music. Every hour we are alive is a gift.

One day, Ammaar Reshi was talking with a chatbot. The chatbot is a computer program that uses AI to think and write like humans. He wondered if he could use the program to produce a children's book. To begin with, he talked to the chatbot and got the story of a girl named Alice. Then, he used another AI tool called Midjourney to create pictures for the book. A couple of days later, Reshi completed a 12-page book, Alice and Sparkle. "Anyone can use these AI tools," he said. "They're not hard to use."

When Reshi shared the book online, not everyone was pleased. Some people thought it was creative, but artists were unhappy. The problem, they said, was not just the poor quality of the artwork (for example, in one drawing, the hands looked strange). It was the way the art was made.

The AI tool, like Midjourney, searches through millions of pictures across the Internet. It uses computer programs to copy designs in those pictures and create new ones. Think of the artists who shared their works online. Midjourney could use their works without their permission. "The main problem for me about AI is that it learns from our artwork," artist Adriane Tsai said, "They're our creations, our personal styles... that we didn't allow others to copy."

Many artists and writers are nervous about their future. Will people still pay them for their works if it can be done cheaper using AI? Some companies are already using AI instead of real artists. For example, a ballet (芭蕾舞团) used AI pictures for ads, and a comedy club used an AI robot to tell jokes. "As a writer who makes money and gets joy from writing, it's troubling to see people choose cheap AI over real human work." Abraham Black says.

Reshi thinks that there should be protections for artists and writers whose works might be used in AI. "IT companies should work with artists when creating the AI artwork." he says.

①Countries usually show the world about themselves with a national symbol. They put the symbol on flags, coins, stamps and so on. When an animal is used this way, it's a national animal. But how do countries choose their national animals?

②Well, they usually choose an animal that comes from their country. The national animal of Tanzania, East Africa, is the giraffe, which lives there as well as in other African countries. But what about the most popular national animal, the lion? The lion's natural environment is Africa, so it is the national animal of lots of African countries, such as Ethiopia or Liberia. What about England, Belgium and Bulgaria, though? They all have the lion as their national symbol, but lions don't come from these countries.

③Often, the main reason for choosing an animal as the national symbol is because of the qualities (品质) the animal has. The lion is the national animal of many countries because people think it is strong, proud, honest and brave. These are the qualities that countries believe they themselves also have. Another national symbol like this is the eagle (鹰), the symbol of the United States. We see eagles as proud, honest and free. A lot of birds are national symbols, partly because they show the idea of freedom.

Rafin, a 16-year-old student from Kenya, has made amazing progress in learning Chinese. Although she has only studied the language for two years, she can speak Chinese with great confidence.

Her journey with the Chinese language began through her eldest brother, who traveled to China in 2018 to get a master's degree in Chinese. When he returned in 2022, his smooth Chinese caught Rafin's attention. "My brother came back with a mobile phone I had never seen before, and everything he brought was made in China. I was curious about this country that seemed to produce so much and I wanted to know more," she says with a smile. "So, I took Chinese language classes at my junior high school two years ago."

In May 2023, she told her Chinese teacher she decided to enter the Chinese Bridge Competition even though there were only two weeks left. She spent those two weeks working really hard. She practised her speech every day, carefully wrote her article, and prepared her performance. At last, her hard work paid off. Her speech, article and performance at the competition pleased the judges. She won a big prize, including a free trip to China.

In October that year, she traveled to China with her teacher. The moment she arrived, she was greeted by friendly Chinese people. She visited famous places like the Great Wall and made friends with local students. When she came back, many other students at her school were encouraged by her success. Out of 200 students,90 chose to learn Chinese.

"I want to become an ambassador (大使) in the future and learn more about Chinese language and culture," says Rafin.

Last week we went on a school trip to a science museum. Ms Liu, the guide, showed us around a smart home.

We started with the front door. Ms Liu asked me to ring the doorbell. I didn't notice the tiny camera that was fixed just above it. After I pressed (按) the doorbell, the camera sent a live video (视频直播) to the homeowners. "They can electronically open the door when they are not at home," said Ms Liu.

Few people knew about online food delivery (外卖) apps ten years ago, but today, many would find it hard to live without them. For better or for worse, online food delivery services have changed the way we eat. 

These services no doubt have many advantages. They provide jobs for millions of people and help restaurants find more customers. Since the apps are very easy to use, they also do good to customers: we can now have meals delivered at any time of day. This is especially important for people who might not have time to cook. Not only do these apps save time, they also provide us with plenty of restaurants to choose from.  They can buy meals and foods more easily with these apps.

 First, they make it even easier to order unhealthy food. Food safety is another problem: it can be hard to know where the food comes from. As delivery men need to send the orders as quickly as possible, some pay little attention to traffic rules.  What's more, delivery services are creating too much packaging waste, and this will be harmful to the environment.

There are many advantages of online food delivery services, but we need to make sure that we make the right choices in the long run. We should do our best to avoid waste. We also need to make sure what we eat is healthy. Next time you are thinking about ordering in, ask yourself whether you really need to. Most of the time, it's better to buy what you need and cook by yourself.

It may sound hard to believe that animals can predict earthquakes, but many events seem to support this idea.

On 4th February 1975, Chinese officials ordered people in Haicheng, Liaoning Province to leave their homes and stay outdoors. They believed a disaster (灾难) was coming, partly because of animals' strange behaviour. For example, people reported seeing groups of toads (蟾蜍) appear in the streets and hibernant (冬眠的) snakes coming out of the ground. Just hours later, a large 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the city.

Another example happened in December 2004 in a national park in Sri Lanka. The animals seemed to sense that something was wrong that day. The birds flew away for no reason, and the elephants ran to higher ground. A few minutes later, there was a huge earthquake deep under the sea.

However, scientists say that while these are interesting examples of animals behaving strangely before earthquakes, it doesn't necessarily mean that animals have the ability to predict natural disasters. It could just be a reaction. All animals have the instinct (本能) to avoid dangers.

So how do they do it? Well, animals have highly developed senses that allow them to pick up on environmental changes that we might not even notice. Some have extremely strong hearing or smell, while others can detect changes in atmospheric pressure (大气压). For example, fish can sense changes in water pressure, so they may jump out of the water or swim in unusual ways before an earthquake.

Although scientists may not agree on animals' special ability, it doesn't hurt to pay a little more attention to the animals around you.

Family education plays a big role in one's life. Good parents will greatly influence their children. Our group wants to know what great values teenagers learn from their parents and how often they communicate with their parents. So a survey was made among 1,000 students in our school including the first, second and third students. Here are the diagrams showing the results.

Family is the first classroom for teenagers, and parents are their first teachers. The character and habits that teenagers develop have a lot to do with their parents. Parents should pay attention to their words and acts because teenagers will follow parents' behavior. Parents should serve as role models for their teenage children. They should show positive behavior (积极行为), such as kindness, honesty, and respect, which their children can learn from them. By setting a good example, parents can help shape their children's character and habits in a positive way.
