The sound from Miranda's alarm clock would not stop.Miranda reached over and stopped the noise ringing in her room. The action brought her a few minutes of peace and quietness.

She shook her head to clear her thoughts and got ready to join her mother. As she walked into the kitchen, her mother gave her a big smile. Immediately, Miranda felt comforted. If nothing else, she at least knew one thing was certain. She was not alone in this and that would make all the difference, no matter what the day would bring.

①Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate(激活) an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people's mood(情绪). But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.

④In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone's spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you're getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.

⑤The story doesn't end here. Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you're in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn't it?

Kathy could still remember the night she had to leave her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to leave their country as soon as possible. She quickly filled a bag with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her treasure—a beautiful silk scarf.

Kathy and her best friend, Monica, had asked their parents to buy them matching scarves. They each would wear the scarves as a symbol of their friendship. Kathy had no idea that she was going to America that night and would not be returning.

Kathy kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Kathy was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see. It is going to bring both of us luck today." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

That afternoon Eliza left the interview, feeling sure that she had got the job. So she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she was sitting at her table, she felt someone looking at her. Sitting next to her was an old woman, who could not take her eyes away from her.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Eliza asked.

"I'm sorry, dear, but you make me think of someone I once knew," the old woman replied. "My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you're wearing around your neck." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this be Monica, her grandmother's childhood friend?

Eliza introduced herself and waited to hear the name of the other woman.

"My name's Monica, dear. I lived in Hungary as a child, but my family had to leave when I was fourteen years old. I've been living here in California ever since." said the old woman.

Older people are easily cheated by scammers. In July 2024, a UK study found that about 67% of people over 75 were victims（受害者）of at least one scam in the six months before the study——with nearly 75% of those being phone scams. 

Meet Daisy, who has been trained to have conversations with phone scammers, and waste their time. The company worked with Jim Browning, who has spent years acting like to be naive victim to waste scammers' time. And that's the whole point——Daisy can't stop scammers, but she can slow them down. "Whenever she' s on the phone with a scammer, your parents, your grandparents, your relatives, are not being cheated, " Browning said. 

The company says, "Daisy is already wasting hundreds and hundreds of hours of scammers' time, and has shared real life conversations the chatbot has had with them. " Some conversations last nearly an hour. She talks about her cat, Fluffy, and people in her family. In some conversations, she even gives the scammers what they want—bank information. But of course, they're not real, " Daisy is also there to remind you that the person you' re speaking to on the phone might not always be who he says he is, " the company adds. 

①A well-known 75-year Harvard study shows that children who do chores can become more independent and successful when they grow up. In fact, chores are very important to children's future development, as they bring many benefits. 

②When children do chores, they can get a sense of achievement because they can easily see the results after finishing the chores. Especially when their parents say thanks for their help and tell them they have made the day easier, they will know they are useful and able to help their families. This experience can also encourage children to be more active in helping others outside of the family.

Dom Pecora has always had a passion（热情）for bikes. When he was around 10 years old, he often broke them. After talking with friends and doing some research, he asked his mom if he could get a more expensive one that wouldn't break easily. His mom said no to the expensive bike, so to make money, he started doing bike repairs. His side job went well, and within the same year, he was able to buy his dream bike. 

By the time the holidays came around, he had made so much money that he decided to gift bikes to kids who could not afford one. "We bought six bikes the first year. Then I continued to do it and then started a nonprofit（非营利性机构）, Dom Fixes Bikes" Pecora said. In 2024, he gave away more than 120 bikes. Dom says he's just getting started. "Since the beginning, I always wanted everyone to be able to ride a bike, no matter how their financial（财务）abilities are, " he says. 

Pecora also shared a touching story from last year. It's about a seven-year-old child whose mother was dying of a serious illness and the father couldn't afford a bike. " They wanted to gift their kid with a bike as a birthday present and we needed to make sure it was his dream bike. We went all out to get the right color and size. We gave it to the kid around November because the mother wasn't sure if she could make it to Christmas, " Pecora said. 

" It really feels good to be able to provide bikes for kids who can't afford them, " the now 15-year-old said. "One small action to brighten someone's day can snowball into helping a whole community. "
