How much sleep do you get every day? Some of us sleep a lot and some of us sleep a little. So do animals. Let's look at the histogram (柱状图) of their sleeping hours!

Koalas come from Australia. They are lovely. They spend a long time sleeping and digesting (消化). Their food doesn't have enough energy (能量) and is hard to digest. So, they sleep to save their energy.

Lions are big sleepers too. They are likely to catch other animals at night or during the early hours of the day. At that time, most lions' prey sleep. This makes the animals easier to catch. When not hunting (猎取), a lion always plays or sleeps on the ground.

Giraffes don't get very much sleep. Mostly they take short sleep while standing up, and they only lie down to get some deep sleep for about 30 minutes. Why? Because they are afraid of getting hurt by other animals while sleeping.

Horses do most of their sleeping while standing up because they're ready to run away. Usually horses only need 20 minutes to get some deep sleep. When the horse group lies down, one horse always stays awake to keep watch. However, you can find some horses sleeping for up to 6 hour a day if they feel safe.

"Class, this is Joon," he says, "He's from South Korea, and he'll be with us for two weeks."

At lunch, Julie, Danny, Emma, and Mike are sitting together. When they see Joon sitting alone, they invite him to join their table. They ask Joon about South Korea. Joon has traveled a lot. He's been to the UK and Italy, but he's never been to the USA before.

They learn that Joon likes art, just like Emma. He likes making models, just like Mike. He plays the violin, just like Julie.

"Do you like skateboarding?" asks Danny.

"I'm not very good at it," says Joon. "Could you show me how?"

"Sure!" says Danny.

After school, they have a great time teaching each other. Danny teaches them all how to skateboard. Then Joon teaches them Taekwondo.

For the next two weeks, the friends teach each other something new every day. They all feel sad when Joon leaves.

We learn things from books, but what if we don't have them? An 8-year-old boy named Brandon once thought about that, and then he had a great1.

One day in 1998, Brandon Keef was home from2 with a cold. His mother, Robin, had to go to a meeting,3 she brought Brandon with her. At the meeting, his mother and her workmates were talking about something and they were all4. The children's center needed a lot of books, but they didn't have much money. Brandon listened and5 this. "Can you show me how to make a timeline, dad?"

"Sure! Let's take out a piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler."

Then Lily used the pencil and the ruler to draw a straight line. Then her father marked (标记) a small line across the longer line at the left end. Near the small line, he wrote "Lily is born."

"Why did you make that small line at the left end, Dad?" Lily asked.

"On a timeline, we order events from left to right. We place the first event on the left end and the last event on the right end."

"Oh! I still remember how I learned to ride my bike. It was exciting!"

"Right! We should write that," her dad said.

"I want to draw a picture about it," Lily told her dad. She made a drawing of herself riding a bike and put it on the paper. Her dad put a photo of Lily's first day of school on the timeline, too.

In the end, they finished their work. Lily said, "That timeline is a picture of my life."

Hummingbirds are beautiful birds. These amazing birds live in North and South America. Many of (they) are quite tiny. Actually, they are (small) birds in the world, some are only six centimeters long. However, they are famous flying fast. They can fly up to 48 kilometers hour! Hummingbirds move their wings very fast. They can fly straight up or hover (盘旋), just like helicopters (直升机). These little birds can also fly backward! Do you know they are called hummingbirds? Because when they fly, their wings make a humming sound. Their wings hum because they beat so fast, many times every second. And that (take) a lot of energy. So they're always busy looking for food. Hummingbirds have no sense of smell (嗅觉), but they can see (real) well. They like (color) flowers. They always fly around flowers (look) for food. They just need food so much that they have to eat every 10-15 (minute)! Actually, they can eat half their weight in sugar every day.

Have you ever met a stranger who becomes one of your real friends? Now I'd like to share the following experience with you. (几个；数个) days ago, the woman I met on my way home is a (完美的) example. I left my office late and forgot that my car needed gas (汽油). I was driving on the road for about forty minutes when the car (开始) making strange noise. Then it (突然) stopped. She wanted to help me because she hoped that someone would stop and help her (在任何……的时候) she was in a similar situation. I'm so thankful for their (仁慈；善良). A stranger is someone you have never met before, but sometimes he or she can truly bring great meaning to our life.

The Election (竞选活动)

Late last August, I was walking home from playing soccer with my friend Pablo. "Our school needs a seventh grade1 team," I told Pablo.

"You should2 seventh grade class president (班长)," said Pablo. "Then you could set one up."

"Who'd want me for president?" I asked and was3 at the idea.

Tips to help you deal with facing mean kids

Believe you're against bully (霸凌者)

, says Carol Watkins, M.D., an expert who gives talks and workshops on bullying. Stand up straight when walking through the halls, and look everyone in the eye when you talk to them.

There's safety in numbers, Watkins says, so be near your friends all the time—especially when walking into places like the lunchroom or school yard where bullies hang out.

Speak up

Paying no attention to bullies doesn't always work. Watkins suggests that you react to teasing (捉弄) with a funny reply., just be honest and say, "What you're doing is wrong; stop it!"

Take up martial arts (武术) to make yourself stronger and feel safer. If bullies turn into fighting, you will know how to stop them with very little physical touch.

Get help

. Watkins says. Even if you think you can face some teasing, you should never have to feel scared to tell others. Once bullies realize that bullying can bring them serious punishment (惩罚), they will probably decide that troubling you is just not worth it.

②For example, in 2008 BBC News reported that penguins (企鹅) could fly. It said their cameraman had seen this happen while filming at the South Pole. He said that, luckily, he had filmed the event, and they showed some videos of penguins taking off and flying through the air. Of course, the BBC later told the truth they had made up the whole story and used special effects (效果) to make the film.

③In 1981 the Daily Mail had a story about a Japanese runner in the London marathon (马拉松). The man was still running days after the race had finished. The story explained that the runner had misunderstood the rules of the race. Instead of running for 26 miles, he believed he needed to run for 26 days. The paper said that he was lost somewhere in the middle of the British countryside.

④And there's certainly nothing new about these types of stories. Back in 1878, the Daily Graphic newspaper in the USA had a story about the famous scientist Thomas Edison. It told its readers that Edison had invented a food machine that would feed the humans. It didn't explain how the machine worked, just that it would make any kind of food using air, water and earth. Many people believed the story and Edison got letters from people all over the country.

⑤So when people tell you not to believe everything you read in the newspapers or watch on TV, they might be right-especially on April 1st!
